Abstract

Cryptography has a long and fascinating history, evolving from ancient techniques to modern methods and now exploring the potential of quantum mechanics. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of cryptographic techniques from past to present. We begin by examining ancient cryptographic techniques, tracing their origins back to 2000 B.C. when the ancient Egyptians used "secret" hieroglyphics. We also discuss evidence from ancient Greece and Rome, such as secret writings and the famous Caesar cipher [1]. These early methods laid the foundation for the field of cryptography. Next, we delve into modern cryptographic techniques that have become increasingly complex and diverse in their applications. We explore how cryptography now makes extensive use of mathematical concepts from fields like information theory, computational complexity, statistics, combinatorics, abstract algebra, number theory, and finite mathematics. We also discuss how the development of digital computers and electronics has revolutionized cryptography, allowing for the encryption of any kind of binary data and the design of much more intricate ciphers [2]. Finally, we examine the emerging field of quantum cryptography, which aims to harness the principles of quantum mechanics to achieve new cryptographic functionalities beyond classical information alone. We survey some of the most remarkable theoretical uses of quantum information for cryptography, as well as the limitations and challenges faced by cryptographers in this new paradigm [3]. By tracing the evolution of cryptography from ancient times to the present day and beyond, this review paper provides valuable insights into the rich history and promising future of this critical field of study.

Abstract: Quantum-cryptography represents a revolutionary advancement in the field of secure correspondence, leveraging the principles of quantum-mechanics to ensure unprecedented levels of security. This review paper provides a comprehensive exploration of both the foundational principles and advanced techniques underpinning quantum cryptographic systems. We begin by examining the theoretical foundations, including quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols such as BB84 and E91, and the critical role of entanglement and superposition in these processes. The paper then delves into the latest advancements and techniques in the field, including device-independent QKD, quantum cryptographic networks, and post-quantum cryptographic methods designed to be resilient against quantum computer attacks. Additionally, we discuss practical implementation challenges and the current state of experimental quantum cryptography. By synthesizing recent research findings and technological developments, this review aims to provide a thorough comprehension of the current environment and future directions of quantum cryptography, highlighting its potential to revolutionize secure communications in the quantum era.

Cryptography from Quantum Mechanical Viewpoint

Cryptography is an art and science of secure communication. Here the sender and receiver are guaranteed the security through encryption of their data, with the help of a common key. Both the parties should agree on this key prior to communication. The cryptographic systems which perform these tasks are designed to keep the key secret while assuming that the algorithm used for encryption and decryption is public. Thus key exchange is a very sensitive issue. In modern cryptographic algorithms this security is based on the mathematical complexity of the algorithm. But quantum computation is expected to revolutionize computing paradigm in near future. This presents a challenge amongst the researchers to develop new cryptographic techniques that can survive the quantum computing era. This paper reviews the radical use of quantum mechanics for cryptography.

Quantum Algorithms and their Applications in Cryptology

Bhupendra Singh, Mohankumar Mylsamy, Thamaraimanalan Thangarajan

Cryptography has long been an essential tool in safeguarding digital communication and securing sensitive information. As technology has progressed, so has the complexity of the methods used to protect our data. In the wake of quantum computing's rise, traditional cryptographic systems face serious challenges, demanding a new understanding of how quantum algorithms could both undermine and enhance security. Chapter 1 deals with the Basics of Cryptography lays the groundwork by introducing classical cryptography, tracing its evolution from ancient ciphers to modern cryptosystems. In Chapter 2, readers are introduced to Quantum Algorithms, the principles of quantum mechanics relevant to computing, including qubits, superposition, and entanglement. The Chapter 3 focuses on Shor’s algorithm, a landmark quantum algorithm that threatens the security of widely used public-key cryptosystems like RSA and ECC. In Chapter 4 Grover’s Algorithm is examined in the context of brute-force attacks on symmetric key cryptography. Chapter 5 focusing on Simon’s Algorithm and its role in breaking cryptographic primitives through structure exploitation. In Chapter 6 a broader discussion about Cryptographic Implications of Quantum Computing is given on how quantum computing affects modern cryptographic systems. Finally, in Chapter 7, the future of cryptography in the quantum era is discussed.
