An Introduction To Quantum Machine Learning Techniques

Subodh Nath Pushpak, Sarika Jain

This paper presents an overview of quantum machine learning (QML) techniques, their approach, and their landscape. QML is a rapidly evolving field of study which has recently generated lots of interest due to improvements it promises over the classical machine learning approaches. This paper presents an overview of the application of quantum information theory on machine learning algorithms. It also discusses various designs, techniques, and algorithms of classical machine learning and quantum information theory and how they can be fused with each other. The goal of this paper is to analyze algorithms and techniques used in QML. The paper also presents some of the promising algorithms used in QML, which can be executed on a real quantum computer over cloud computing platforms with the aim to evaluate its performance based on given parameters.

Introduction

Sumathi Rao

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights quantum field theory techniques that were developed in parallel in high energy physics and condensed matter physics. It explains the relevance of quantum field theory methods developed in the context of high energy physics, to many particle systems, even though, in principle, quantum mechanics may suffice to understand these systems. The book discusses the modern perspective of phase transitions and use a length scale based approach. It deals with the application of the ideas of bosonization in simple one-dimensional models such as spin models and the Hubbard model, where the calculational tools of bosonization and Renormalisation group are used to compute physically relevant quantities like conductances. The book also highlights the idea that topological concepts play an important role in a wide range of phenomena.

Theory and Implementation of the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm: A Comprehensible Introduction and Case Study Using Qiskit and IBM Quantum Computers

Sturm, Andreas

The present tutorial aims to provide a comprehensible and easily accessible introduction into the theory and implementation of the famous Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). We lay our focus on practical aspects and step-by-step guide through the realization of a proof of concept quantum application based on a real-world use case. In every step we first explain the underlying theory and subsequently provide the implementation using IBM's Qiskit. In this way we provide a thorough understanding of the mathematical modelling and the (quantum) algorithms as well as the equally important knowledge how to properly write the code implementing those theoretical concepts. As another central aspect of this tutorial we provide extensive experiments on the 27 qubits state-of-the-art quantum computer ibmq_ehningen. From the discussion of these experiments we gain an overview on the current status of quantum computers and deduce which problem sizes can meaningfully be executed on today's hardware.
