Magnetization of a System of High-Spin Ions in Zero Magnetic Field with Microwave Pulses at Finite Temperatures

Abstract

Abstract— The resonant microwave pulses have been shown to be able to create magnetization of high-spin (S ≥ 1) metal ions even in the absence of an external magnetic field. This transformation of the ion spin states is similar to the “alignment–orientation” transition in atomic spectroscopy. These manipulations make it possible to translate the results of elementary quantum computing operations performed in zero magnetic fields into physically observable quantities.

The implementation of quantum computing operations with phase modulated microwave pulses and high-spin ions at zero magnetic fields

New physical implementations of quantum computing elementary operations by pulse manipulations with electron spins of paramagnetic ions having two electrons and spin S=1 in a zero magnetic field are proposed. New type of microwave pulses with variable phases and different polarizations are able to induce different transitions between ion spin states, and those transitions are described by quantum computing operators. To describe the effects of such pulses, a new way to present exponential operators as polynomials of Pauli matrices is proposed.

Time evolution of spin state of radical ion pair in microwave field: An analytical solution

S. V. Anishchik, V. N. Verkhovlyuk, V. A. Bagryansky

Abstract. The paper reports an exact solution for the problem of spin evolution of radical ion pair in static magnetic and resonant microwave field taking into account Zeeman and hyperfine interactions and spin relaxation. The values of parameters that provide one of the four possible types of solution are analysed. It is demonstrated that in the absence of spin relaxation, besides the zero field invariant an invariant at large amplitudes of the resonant microwave field can be found. The two invariants open the possibility for simple calculation of microwave pulses to control quantum state of the radical pair. The effect of relaxation on the invariants is analysed and it is shown that changes in the high field invariant are induced by phase relaxation. PACS numbers: 03.65.Db, 33.35.+r Submitted to: J. Collisions of spin-polarized atoms and ions in magnetic fields

Wolfgang Jitschin, S. Osimitsch, Hans O. Lutz

Collision experiments employing a preparation and/or an analysis of spin polarization provide a powerful tool to study individual interaction mechanisms. For atoms or ions with nonvanishing nuclear moments the hyperfine interaction before and after the collision may affect the spin polarization and any collision-induced orientation and alignment, thereby substantially reducing experimentally observable effects. This disturbance can be avoided by applying an external magnetic field, as is demonstrated here for the inelastic collision process ${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$+Na(\ensuremath{\uparrow}) \ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$+${\mathrm{Na}}^{\mathrm{*}}$(3p). Easily attainable magnetic field strengths are sufficient to decouple electronic and nuclear spins whereby the figure of merit for both, orientation and alignment, is increased by more than one order of magnitude.

On the possibility of polarizing atoms and nuclei by pulsed electromagnetic fields without using ultra-low temperatures

David F. Zaretsky, S. B. Sazonov

A method is proposed for fast and deep polarization of the system of hyperfine sublevels of the ground state of an atom having an optical excited state by means of two-component microwave pulses. The pulse of the bichromatic optical field that induces the transitions between the ground state and excited state of the atom is supposed to provide coherence among the hyperfine sublevels of the atomic ground state via the effect of coherent population trapping. The subsequent resonance microwave pulses create the polarization of equally populated ground state sublevels of the atom. The proposed polarization technique may be used for designing the new schemes of quantum computers, for the pulse transformation in optical experiments when light passes through a resonant medium containing rear-earth ions, as well as for producing polarized nuclear targets.
