Abstract

Quantum Fisher information (QFI) may exhibit the irregular behavior at the critical point of phase transitions of a physical system and be very sensitive to slight variations of some controlling parameters. This parameter sensitivity may be used for quantum parameter estimation or quantum sensing. In this study, taking the quantum Rabi model as an example, we investigate the critical properties of the QFI for the parameter estimation at the critical point of the SU(1,1) dynamic systems. We show that the QFI goes divergently in the sixth power law $({T}^{6})$ of the parameter coding time around the critical point. After taking into the consumption of energy during the dynamic evolution, we find that the variation of the QFI around the critical point is scaled by the Heisenberg scaling ${T}^{2}$. It is noticed that for nonclassical initial probe states the scaling of QFI can beat the standard quantum limit $({n}_{0})$ as a function of the initial mean phonon number ${n}_{0}$. The homodyne and phonon-number measurement schemes are compared. We find that the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound can be reached by use of the phonon-number detection scheme. However, it is more sensitive to the noise than the homodyne detection scheme. We extend the investigation to a two-mode non-Hermitian system and show that the QFI exhibits the same irregular properties at the exceptional point, revealing that for the SU(1,1) dynamic systems the QFI universally diverges as ${T}^{6}$ at the critical point.

Distinct Critical Scaling of Quantum Fisher Information in a Quantum Rabi Triangle System

Yuyang Tang, Yu Yang, Min An +1 more

Critical properties of a quantum system are recognized as valuable resources for quantum metrology. In this work, we investigate the criticality-enhanced sensing in a quantum Rabi triangle system, which exhibits multiple phases. Around the phase boundary, enhanced parameter estimation precision can be achieved by tuning either the scaled coupling strength or the hopping phase controlled by an artificial magnetic field. We observe that the quantum Fisher information shows divergent scaling near different quantum phase transition points, characterized by distinct critical exponents. When the resource consumption is taken into account, we find that the divergent quantum Fisher information can reach the Heisenberg limit. Furthermore, we propose a measurement scheme of the average photon number and the quantum Cramér-Rao bound can be saturated.

Scaling of quantum Fisher information for quantum exceptional point sensors

Chunhui Liu, Fu Li, Shengwang Du +3 more

In recent years, significant progress has been made in utilizing the divergence of spectrum response rate at the exceptional point (EP) for sensing in classical systems, while the use and characterization of quantum EPs for sensing have been largely unexplored. For a quantum EP sensor, an important issue is the relation between the order of the quantum EP and the scaling of quantum Fisher information (QFI), an essential quantity for characterizing quantum sensors. Here we investigate multi-mode quadratic bosonic systems, which exhibit higher-order EP dynamics, but possess Hermitian Hamiltonians without Langevin noise, thus can be utilized for quantum sensing. We derive an exact analytic formula for the QFI, from which we establish a scaling relation between the QFI and the order of the EP. We apply the formula to study a three-mode EP sensor and a multi-mode bosonic Kitaev chain and show that the EP physics can significantly enhance the sensing sensitivity. Our work establishes the connection between two important fields: non-Hermitian EP dynamics and quantum sensing, and may find important applications in quantum information and quantum non-Hermitian physics.

Quantum Fisher information and parameter estimation in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Jing Li, Hai-Tao Ding, Dan-Wei Zhang

Quantum Fisher information bounds the ultimate precision limit in the parameter estimation and has important applications in quantum metrology. In recent years, the theoretical and experimental studies of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians realized in quantum systems have attracted wide attention. Here, the parameter estimation based on eigenstates of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians is investigated, and the corresponding quantum Fisher information and quantum Cramér-Rao bound for the single-parameter and two-parameter estimations are given. In particular, the quantum Fisher information about estimating intrinsic momentum and external parameters in the non-reciprocal and gain-and-loss Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models, and non-Hermitian versions of the quantum Ising chain, Chern-insulator model and two-level system are calculated and analyzed. For these non-Hermitian models, the results show that in the case of single-parameter estimation in these non-Hermitian models, the quantum Fisher information increases significantly in the gapless regime and near the exceptional points, which can improve the accuracy limit of parameter estimation. For the two-parameter estimation, the determinant of the quantum Fisher information matrix also increases obviously near the gapless and exceptional points. In addition, a higher overall accuracy can be achieved in the topological regime than in the trivial regime, and the topological bound in two-parameter estimation can be determined by the Chern number.

Simulation of exceptional-point systems on quantum computers for quantum sensing

Chetan Waghela, Shubhrangshu Dasgupta

There has been debate around applicability of exceptional points (EPs) for quantum sensing. To resolve this, we first explore how to experimentally implement the non-Hermitian non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians, which exhibit EPs, in quantum computers that run on unitary gates. We propose to use an ancilla-based method in this regard. Next, we show how such Hamiltonians can be used for parameter estimation using quantum computers and analyze its performance in terms of the quantum Fisher information (QFI) at EPs, both without noise and in the presence of noise. It is well known that QFI of a parameter to be estimated is inversely related to the variance of the parameter by the quantum Cramer–Rao bound. Therefore, the divergence of the QFI at EPs promises sensing advantages. We experimentally demonstrate in a cloud quantum architecture and theoretically show, using Puiseux series, that the QFI indeed diverges in such EP systems that were earlier considered to be non-divergent.

Quantum-dynamical phase transition and Fisher information in a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard dimer

Yixiao Huang, Heng-Na Xiong, Wei Zhong +2 more

We study the dynamical properties in a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard dimer and show that the steady state consists mostly of the eigenstate whose eigenvalue has the largest imaginary part. A sharp phase transition occurs in the steady state and the phase transition occurs for a finite particle number, not for infinite ones, in contrast to the Hermitian system. We also investigate the quantum Fisher information and entanglement in two different phases. The results show that the steady state in the Josephson oscillation regime is fully N -particle entangled and the corresponding parameter sensitivity approaches the Heisenberg limit. In the self-trapping regime, the parameter sensitivity just scales as the shot-noise limit. Moreover, quantum Fisher information of the steady state is robust to the initial state, which indicates that the non-Hermitian dynamics takes more advantage than the Hermitian one for quantum metrology.

Toward Heisenberg scaling in non-Hermitian metrology at the quantum regime

Xinglei Yu, Xinzhi Zhao, Liangsheng Li +4 more

Non-Hermitian quantum metrology, an emerging field at the intersection of quantum estimation and non-Hermitian physics, holds promise for revolutionizing precision measurement. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of non-Hermitian quantum parameter estimation in the quantum regime, with a special focus on achieving Heisenberg scaling. We introduce a concise expression for the quantum Fisher information (QFI) that applies to general non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, enabling the analysis of estimation precision in these systems. Our findings unveil the remarkable potential of non-Hermitian systems to attain the Heisenberg scaling of 1/ t , where t represents time. Moreover, we derive optimal measurement conditions based on the proposed QFI expression, demonstrating the attainment of the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. By constructing non-unitary evolutions governed by two non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, one with parity-time symmetry and the other without specific symmetries, we experimentally validate our theoretical analysis. The experimental results affirm the realization of Heisenberg scaling in estimation precision, marking a substantial milestone in non-Hermitian quantum metrology.
