Abstract

As evolving digital ecosystems become increasingly interconnected and reliant on digital transactions, secure, private and user-centric identity solutions are garnering more spotlight than ever before. In this paper, we propose an innovative architecture that integrates quantum key distribution (QKD) with blockchain-based self-sovereign identity (SSI) systems for secure key distribution and network/user management for mobile networks with advanced 6G network capabilities. The proposed approach leverages the advanced security guarantes of QKD to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of communications and uses the decentralized and immutable nature of blockchain technology to give individuals/organizations control over their digital identities in mobile environments. We then go on to expound on the foundations of architectural components and discuss its implications for various telecom specific services and applications. Finally, we present challenges and future directions to provide quantum communication support against future digital threats and a decentralized framework for identity management with the global pursuit of more privacy-friendly and usercentric digital services, and offer comparisons with traditional approaches.

Integrating Quantum-Secured Blockchain Identity Management in Open RAN for 6G Networks

Engin Zeydan, Luis Blanco, Josep Mangues‐Bafalluy +3 more

In this paper, we propose an innovative integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Blockchain-based Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) within the Open RAN (O-RAN) framework for 6G networks to address the critical need for enhanced security and robust identity management. We first present a general architecture that takes a multi-layered approach and is carefully designed to leverage the different capabilities of quantum security and blockchain technology. The architecture ensures seamless and secure operation across different layers of the O-RAN, focusing on the Distributed Identity Management (DIM) and Management & Orchestration layers, and explains the interactions between these layers to improve the security and operational efficiency of the network. We also investigate detailed case studies and applications that demonstrate the practicality and transformative potential of integrating QKD-secured blockchain identity management systems in real-world 6G scenarios. We also address the inherent challenges and limitations of such integration and propose viable solutions to overcome them. Finally, we provide insights into future research and implementation directions and highlight the critical role of quantum-secured blockchain systems in the evolution of telecommunication networks toward a more secure, decentralized, and user-centric paradigm.

Abstract The increasing demand for secure communications in mobile and critical infrastructure networks has led to the emergence of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) as a promising technique for enhancing cryptographic security in next-generation systems. This paper reviews recent progress in integrating QKD within mobile and wireless networks. It focuses on key enabling technologies, such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN), satellite-based, and aerial networks. The paper critically analyzes how these frameworks can address evolving security requirements in sixth-generation (6G) networks and smart city infrastructures. Additionally, it examines the role of Machine Learning (ML) in improving QKD performance and adaptability. Challenges such as key management, mobility support, scalability, and interoperability are explored. These challenges help identify current barriers and research directions. By consolidating developments and highlighting unresolved issues, this study offers researchers valuable insights. It discusses the convergence of quantum communication and advanced mobile architectures, facilitating the design of secure and resilient future communication infrastructures.

Exploring Quantum Key Distribution for Secure Communication in 6G and Beyond Networks

Ramanathan Udayakumar, A Haja Alaudeen, Ульмас Ибрагимов +2 more

Sixth-generation (6G) networks offer unprecedented ultra-reliability, capacity, and low-latency communication. Nevertheless, the same developments also pose security threats to complex communication infrastructures that may be resistant to traditional cryptographic tools, especially in the context of quantum computing. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is an innovative technique for achieving unconditional security that leverages quantum-mechanical principles to share cryptographic keys securely. This paper discusses how QKD can be integrated into 6G and beyond networks and used to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of data across applications such as autonomous systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart city infrastructure. This paper explores the architecture of QKD-based 6G communication, key-generation systems, and quantum-resistant network layers. It also examines scalability, synchronization, and hardware implementation, and suggests possible hybrid approaches for integrating classical and quantum security protocols. The results imply that the idea of QKD may become the foundation of safeguarded communication systems in the future, ensuring resilience against attacks in the quantum era and enabling individuals to trust the next generation of wireless.

Next–Generation Cloud Computing: Leveraging Quantum Optimization for Resource Management

N Gobi, M. Balakrishnan, S. R. Indurekaa +1 more

The integration of quantum cryptography and blockchain offers a transformative approach to enhance data security in cloud environments. Quantum cryptography, leveraging principles of quantum mechanics such as quantum key distribution (QKD), ensures unbreakable encryption by enabling secure key exchange. Simultaneously, blockchain technology introduces decentralization, transparency, and immutability, ensuring data integrity and preventing unauthorized tampering. This research explores the synergy between these technologies to develop a novel framework for cloud security. The proposed model leverages QKD for secure communication channels and blockchain-based distributed ledgers for verifying transactions and access control. Key contributions include a hybrid encryption mechanism using quantum keys, a consensus algorithm optimized for cloud operations, and integration strategies to mitigate quantum attacks. Performance evaluations demonstrate enhanced resilience against data breaches, improved key management, and seamless scalability for modern cloud architectures. This study establishes a secure, future-proof infrastructure that addresses emerging threats in the post-quantum era while ensuring trust, confidentiality, and data integrity in cloud ecosystems.

Ricardo Fernandes Da Silva N.A.

This paper presents an innovative architecture for blockchain systems that integrates quantum key distribution (QKD) cryptography as a fundamental component to enhance the security and integrity of transactions in the face of the growing threat posed by quantum computers. The proposed architecture leverages the unconditional security of QKD, based on the laws of quantum physics, to protect the blockchain against potential attacks that could compromise classical cryptographic algorithms. We explore the architecture design, consensus protocols, transaction authentication mechanisms, and the practical implications of integrating QKD into blockchain systems. The analysis focuses on the quantum key distribution systems from ID Quantique (IDQ), recognised for their robustness and reliability, to highlight the feasibility and benefits of implementing QKD in real-world scenarios. Additionally, we explore the challenges and opportunities inherent in implementing this architecture, including QKD scalability, key management, interoperability, and integration with existing communication infrastructures.
