Abstract

We investigate the steady-state energy flow of the periodically driven nonequilibrium spin-boson model by means of combining counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave (CHRW) method with full counting statistics. In the case of weak driving $(A<0.1\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})$, where $A$ is the driving amplitude and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ is the energy gap of the two-level system, our results are consistent with those obtained by traditional rotating-wave approximation (RWA) approach; in the case of high-frequency driving, our results are in agreement with the ones of the secular Floquet-Redfield method. As the driving amplitude increases, the steady-state flow exhibits nonlinear behavior: it reaches a maximum at medium driving, and then decreases to zero, which means that the coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) appears, and then continues to grow slowly. We also find that, when the steady-state energy flow varies with driving frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}$, comparing with RWA results, the counter-rotating (CR) terms increase the energy flow at low-frequency driving $({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}<\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})$, where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}$ is the driving frequency, and decreases it at high-frequency driving $({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}>\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})$. In the case of strong driving, when the zero-order Bessel function of the first kind satisfies ${J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}}\ensuremath{\zeta})=0$, instead of ${J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}})=0$, the steady-state energy flow is 0, which corresponds to the CDT of the energy flow. The modified parameter $\ensuremath{\zeta}$ mainly defines the contribution of the CR terms. At high-frequency driving, the modified parameter $\ensuremath{\zeta}$ tends to $1,$ our result is consistent with previous results ${J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}})=0$. We find that the CDT of flow only occurs when both CR terms of the driving and the dissipation are considered simultaneously. Our results show the influence of the CR terms on the energy flow and the modification of CDT condition and give theoretical guidance for energy transport of small quantum devices.

Effects of counter-rotating interaction on driven tunneling dynamics: Coherent destruction of tunneling and Bloch-Siegert shift

Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

We investigate the dynamics of a driven two-level system (classical Rabi model) using the counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave method (CHRW), which is a simple method based on a unitary transformation with a parameter $\ensuremath{\xi}$. This approach is beyond the traditional rotating-wave approximation (Rabi-RWA) and more importantly, remains the RWA form with a renormalized tunneling strength and a modified driving strength. The reformulated rotating-wave method not only possesses the same mathematical simplicity as the Rabi-RWA but also allows us to explore the effects of counter-rotating (CR) components. We focus on the properties of off-resonance cases for which the Rabi-RWA method breaks down. After comparing the results of different RWA schemes and those of the numerically exact method in a wide range of parameter regime, we show that the CHRW method gives the accurate driven dynamics which is in good agreement with the numerical method. Moreover, the other RWA methods appear as various limiting cases of the CHRW method. The CHRW method reveals the effects of the CR terms clearly by means of coherent destruction of tunneling and Bloch-Siegert shift. Our main results are as follows: (i) the dynamics of the coherent destruction of tunneling is explicitly given and its dependence on $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is clarified, which is quantitatively in good agreement with the exact results; (ii) the CR modulated Rabi frequency and the Bloch-Siegert shift are analytically calculated, which is the same as the exact results up to fourth order; (iii) the validity of parameter regions of different RWA methods are given and the comparison of dynamics of these methods are shown. Since the CHRW approach is mathematically simple as well as tractable and physically clear, it may be extended to some complicated problems where it is difficult to do a numerical study.

Dynamical effects of counter-rotating couplings on interference between driving and dissipation

Yiying Yan, Zhiguo Lü, Hang Zheng

We use an analytical method to study the dissipative dynamics of a two-level system (TLS) under a harmonic driving. The method is based on a combination of the unitary transformation and Born--Markov master-equation approach. Our main aim is to clarify the effects of counter-rotating (CR) terms of both the driving and TLS-bath (dissipative) coupling on the dynamics, in comparison with the rotating-wave results of different schemes, i.e., the well-known traditional rotating-wave approximation method, and two particular methods: one just takes into account the effects of the driving CR terms and the other the effects of the dissipative CR terms, which are derived from our general treatment. Our main results are as follows: (i) by calculating the time-dependent population difference and coherence, in the case of resonant strong driving, we demonstrate that the CR terms of both the driving and dissipative coupling play an important role in the relaxation and dephasing processes, and also the properties of the steady state; (ii) in the case of largely detuned driving, we find that the CR terms of the dissipative coupling become negligible while those of the driving contribute dominant modifications to the time evolution and steady state. Moreover, we examine the influence of the dissipation on coherent destruction of tunneling under a largely detuned strong driving. We show that an almost complete suppression of the tunneling can be achieved for a relatively long time; (iii) under certain conditions, we find numerical equivalence between one of two particular methods and the Floquet--Born--Markov approach based on exact numerical treatment of the Floquet Hamiltonian. It turns out that our method is more simple and efficient than the Floquet--Born--Markov approach for both analytical and numerical calculations. By the general comparison of different treatments we demonstrate the dynamical effects of CR terms of both the driving and the dissipative coupling on the coherence and population difference.

Plateau dynamics with quantized oscillations of a strongly driven qubit

Yejia Chen, Zhiguo Lü, Yiying Yan +1 more

We present an interesting dynamical temporal localization of a strongly driven two-level system (TLS), a plateau with quantized oscillation, by an analytical and transparent method, the counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave (CHRW) method. This approach, which is based on unitary transformations with a single parameter, treats the rotating and counter-rotating terms on equal footing. In the unitarily transformed representation, we find that it is the multiple-harmonic terms shown in the transformed Hamiltonian that make a crucial contribution to the generation of the exotic plateau phenomenon. By comparing the results of the numerically exact calculation and several other methods, we show that the CHRW results obtained by analytical formalism involving the collective effects of multiple harmonics are in good agreement with the numerical results, which illustrates not only the general tendency of the dynamical evolution of strongly driven TLS, but also the interesting phenomena of plateaus. The developed CHRW method reveals two kinds of plateau patterns: zigzag plateau and armchair plateau, and quantitative analysis is given to comprehensively describe the features of the plateau phenomenon. The plateau phenomenon has a periodical pattern whose frequency is double the driving frequency, and possesses quantized oscillations, the number of which has a certain, precise value. Also, fast oscillation is produced on every plateau that is determined by the relevant driving parameters of the TLS. Our main results are as follows: (i) in the large-amplitude oscillatory case, it turns out that the collective effects of all even harmonics contribute to the generation of zigzag plateau with quantized oscillation, and the general tendency of evolution coincides with the result of the original CHRW method because of a linear trend of the phase function; (ii) in the small-amplitude oscillatory case, the dynamics of the coherent destruction of tunneling under strong driving is exactly exhibited by including the odd-harmonic effect, which offers an attractive dynamical pattern, namely, armchair plateau possessing a two-stair structure rather than the complete destruction. Besides, the characteristics of the plateau (position, frequency, the envelope, and number of quantized oscillations) are revealed by our analytical formalism. Both of the dynamical patterns are of great interest to strongly driven physics in the ongoing research on driven TLS systems.

Coherent Destruction of Tunneling .of Bosons with Effective Three-Body Interactions

The tunneling dynamics of dilute boson gases with three-body interactions in a periodically driven double wells are investigated both theoretically and numerically. In our findings, when the system is with only repulsive twobody interactions or only three-body interactions, the tunneling will be suppressed;while in the case of the coupling between two- and three-body interactions, the tunneling can be either suppressed or enhanced.Particularly, when attractive three-body interactions are twice large as repulsive two-body interactions,CDT occurs at isolated points of driving force, which is similar to the linear case.Considering different interaction, the system can experience different transformation from coherent tunneling to coherent destruction of tunneling(CDT).The quasi-energy of the system as the function of the periodically driving force shows a triangular structure, which provides a deep insight into the tunneling dynamics of the system.

Discontinuities in Driven Spin-Boson Systems due to Coherent Destruction of Tunneling: Breakdown of the Floquet-Gibbs Distribution

Georg Engelhardt, Gloria Platero, Jianshu Cao

If an open quantum system is periodically driven with high frequency and the driving commutes with the system-bath coupling operator, it is known that the system approaches a Floquet-Gibbs state, a generalization of Gibbs states to periodically driven systems. Here, we investigate the stationary state of an ac-driven system when the driving and dissipation are noncommutative. Then, the resulting stationary state does not obey the Floquet-Gibbs distribution, and the system dynamics is determined by inelastic scattering processes of the driving field. Based on the Floquet-Redfield formalism, we show that the probability distribution can exhibit population inversion and discontinuities, i.e., jumps, for parameters at which coherent destruction of tunneling takes place. These discontinuities can be observed as intensity jumps in the emission into the bath.

We investigate the steady-state energy flow of the periodically driven nonequilibrium spin-boson model by means of combining counter-rotating-hybridized rotating-wave (CHRW) method with full counting statistics. In the case of weak driving (A<0.1\ensuremathΔ)(A<0.1\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})(A<0.1\ensuremathΔ), where AAA is the driving amplitude and \ensuremathΔ\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremathΔ is the energy gap of the two-level system, our results are consistent with those obtained by traditional rotating-wave approximation (RWA) approach; in the case of high-frequency driving, our results are in agreement with the ones of the secular Floquet-Redfield method. As the driving amplitude increases, the steady-state flow exhibits nonlinear behavior: it reaches a maximum at medium driving, and then decreases to zero, which means that the coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) appears, and then continues to grow slowly. We also find that, when the steady-state energy flow varies with driving frequency \ensuremathωd{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}\ensuremathωd, comparing with RWA results, the counter-rotating (CR) terms increase the energy flow at low-frequency driving (\ensuremathωd<\ensuremathΔ)({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}<\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})(\ensuremathωd<\ensuremathΔ), where \ensuremathωd{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}\ensuremathωd is the driving frequency, and decreases it at high-frequency driving (\ensuremathωd>\ensuremathΔ)({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}>\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}})(\ensuremathωd>\ensuremathΔ). In the case of strong driving, when the zero-order Bessel function of the first kind satisfies J0(A\ensuremathωd\ensuremathζ)=0{J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}}\ensuremath{\zeta})=0J0(\ensuremathωdA\ensuremathζ)=0, instead of J0(A\ensuremathωd)=0{J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}})=0J0(\ensuremathωdA)=0, the steady-state energy flow is 0, which corresponds to the CDT of the energy flow. The modified parameter \ensuremathζ\ensuremath{\zeta}\ensuremathζ mainly defines the contribution of the CR terms. At high-frequency driving, the modified parameter \ensuremathζ\ensuremath{\zeta}\ensuremathζ tends to 1,1,1, our result is consistent with previous results J0(A\ensuremathωd)=0{J}_{0}(\frac{A}{{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{d}})=0J0(\ensuremathωdA)=0. We find that the CDT of flow only occurs when both CR terms of the driving and the dissipation are considered simultaneously. Our results show the influence of the CR terms on the energy flow and the modification of CDT condition and give theoretical guidance for energy transport of small quantum devices.
