Abstract

The chapter examines the potential of quantum computing and robotics in these two domains. The chapter gives an overview of quantum robots’ state-of-the-art and examines its possible uses in astrobiology and space exploration. The introduction to quantum computing and robotics in the first section of the chapter highlights the potential benefits of applying quantum computing to astrobiology and space exploration. The potential for autonomous exploration utilizing quantum robots is then examined, along with the difficulties of operating robots in complicated extraterrestrial environments. The chapter also covers the possibility of utilizing quantum robots to look for evidence of extraterrestrial life, as well as the creation of cutting-edge sensors and tools to find biomarkers and other potential indicators of life. It looks at the scientific and engineering obstacles that must be removed to fully realize quantum robotics’ potential for astrobiology and space travel. The chapter provides case studies of current and former space missions, like the Mars rovers and the look for exoplanets that have utilized or would have benefited from quantum robotics. It also looks at possible future advances and uses for quantum robotics in astrobiology and space exploration, including how they can transform our knowledge of the cosmos and the search for extraterrestrial life. This will be a useful resource for academics and students interested in the nexus of astrobiology, robotics, quantum computing, and space travel. It emphasizes how quantum robotics has the potential to alter how we think about the cosmos and our place in it, and it offers a direction for more investigation and advancement in this fascinating area.

Quantum Computing for Robotics: Algorithms, Optimization, and Future Systems.

Nnaemeka Kingsley Ugwumba

This textbook provides a comprehensive foundation for the emerging interdisciplinary field of quantum robotics. It systematically addresses the core question of how quantum computational principles can be formulated to address fundamental challenges in robotics: planning, optimization, perception, and control. The work is structured to build a rigorous bridge between the abstract mathematics of quantum information and the concrete computational problems of autonomous systems. The first part establishes the necessary foundations, introducing the computational models of quantum circuits alongside the classical formulations of robotic kinematics, dynamics, and state estimation. The second part is dedicated to quantum algorithmic primitives, with detailed exposition on quantum search, quantum linear algebra, and quantum optimization algorithms. Each algorithmic chapter explicitly maps these primitives to robotic problem classes, such as motion planning, sensor data processing, and trajectory optimization, discussing both potential advantages and current practical constraints. The third part focuses on system integration and forward-looking perspectives. It explores quantum machine learning models for robotic learning, outlines hybrid quantum-classical computer architectures required for real-world applications, and rigorously examines the ethical and societal implications of increasingly capable quantum-optimized autonomous systems. The textbook concludes with practical appendices detailing software tools, benchmark problems, and problem sets. Designed for graduate students and researchers in robotics, computer science, and quantum engineering, this book emphasizes clear problem formulation, realistic resource analysis, and verifiable claims. Its goal is to equip the next generation of scientists and engineers with the principles and critical perspective needed to advance the field beyond theoretical potential into practical, validated technology.

Space Searches with a Quantum Robot

Paul A. Benioff

Quantum robots are described as mobile quantum computers and ancillary systems that move in and interact with arbitrary environments. Their dynamics is given as tasks which consist of sequences of alternating computation and action phases. A task example is considered in which a quantum robot searches a space region to find the location of a system. The possibility that the search can be more efficient than a classical search is examined by considering use of Grover's Algorithm to process the search results. For reversible searches this is problematic for two reasons. One is the removal of entanglements generated by the search process. The other is that even if the entanglement can be avoided, the search process in 2-D space regions is no more efficient than a classical search. However, quantum searches of space regions with 3 or more dimensions are more efficient than classical searches. Reasons why quantum robots are interesting independent of these results are briefly summarized.
