Operator means and the reduced relative quantum entropy

Abstract

Abstract We study operator means more general than the Kubo-Ando means. They are given as minima of geodesically convex functions and allow uniquely defined extensions to any number of variables. Multivariate hyper-means is a class of means of this type bounded from below by the arithmetic mean. We extend the definition of a hyper-man in the bivariate case and discover bivariate means that are not restrictions of the multivariate means studied earlier. We introduce the notion of reduced relative quantum entropy and prove that it is convex. The result is used to give a simplified proof of a theorem of Lieb and Seiringer.

We introduce the notion of reduced relative quantum entropy and prove that it is convex. This result is then used to give a simplified proof of a theorem of Lieb and Seiringer.

A UNIFIED TREATMENT OF CONVEXITY OF RELATIVE ENTROPY AND RELATED TRACE FUNCTIONS, WITH CONDITIONS FOR EQUALITY

Anna Jenčová, Mary Beth Ruskai

We consider a generalization of relative entropy derived from the Wigner–Yanase–Dyson entropy and give a simple, self-contained proof that it is convex. Moreover, special cases yield the joint convexity of relative entropy, and for Tr K* ApK B1-pLieb's joint concavity in (A, B) for 0 < p < 1 and Ando's joint convexity for 1 < p ≤ 2. This approach allows us to obtain conditions for equality in these cases, as well as conditions for equality in a number of inequalities which follow from them. These include the monotonicity under partial traces, and some Minkowski type matrix inequalities proved by Carlen and Lieb for [Formula: see text]. In all cases, the equality conditions are independent of p; for extensions to three spaces they are identical to the conditions for equality in the strong subadditivity of relative entropy.

CONVEXITY OF PARAMETER EXTENSIONS OF SOME RELATIVE OPERATOR ENTROPIES WITH A PERSPECTIVE APPROACH

Ismail Nikoufar

Abstract In this paper, we introduce two notions of a relative operator (α, β)-entropy and a Tsallis relative operator (α, β)-entropy as two parameter extensions of the relative operator entropy and the Tsallis relative operator entropy. We apply a perspective approach to prove the joint convexity or concavity of these new notions, under certain conditions concerning α and β. Indeed, we give the parametric extensions, but in such a manner that they remain jointly convex or jointly concave. Significance Statement. What is novel here is that we convincingly demonstrate how our techniques can be used to give simple proofs for the old and new theorems for the functions that are relevant to quantum statistics. Our proof strategy shows that the joint convexity of the perspective of some functions plays a crucial role to give simple proofs for the joint convexity (resp. concavity) of some relative operator entropies.

Kubo-Ando Means and Rigidity of Quantum Positivity Cones

Mohsen Kian

We investigate the stability of quantum positivity cones under nonlinear operator means. Specifically, we examine how Kubo--Ando means interact with the separable, positive partial transpose (PPT), and Schmidt-number cones. By analyzing the curvature of operator monotone functions at the identity, we give a strict rigidity phenomenon: weighted arithmetic means are the only Kubo--Ando means that preserve the separable cone in all dimensions. We show that the strictly positive curvature of any non-arithmetic mean explicitly forces a violation of the PPT condition, even in the foundational two-qubit setting, and can strictly increase the Schmidt number of the resulting operator. Finally, using the Choi--Jamiołkowski correspondence, we translate these geometric obstructions to the map-theoretic setting, concluding that convex mixing is the uniquely permissible Kubo--Ando operation for preserving entanglement-breaking quantum channels.

Convexity of quasi-entropy type functions: Lieb’s and Ando’s convexity theorems revisited

Fumio Hiai, Dėnes Petz

Given a positive function f on (0, ∞) and a non-zero real parameter θ, we consider a function I θ f (A, B, X) = Tr X ∗ (f(LAR −1 B)RB) −θ (X) in three matrices A, B> 0 and X. This generalizes the notion of monotone metrics on positive definite matrices, and in the literature θ = ±1 has been typical. We investigate how operator monotony of f is sufficient and/or necessary for joint convexity/concavity of Iθ f (A, B, X). Similar discussions are given for quasi-entropies and quantum skew informations.

FROM JOINT CONVEXITY OF QUANTUM RELATIVE ENTROPY TO A CONCAVITY THEOREM OF LIEB

Joel A. Tropp, Communicated Marius Junge

Abstract. This paper provides a succinct proof of a 1973 theorem of Lieb that establishes the concavity of a certain trace function. The development relies on a deep result from quantum information theory, the joint convexity of quantum relative entropy, as well as a recent argument due to Carlen and Lieb. 1.
