Abstract

Abstract We investigate the ground states of spin–orbit coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of Zeeman splitting. By introducing the generalized momentum operator, the linear version of the system is solved exactly, yielding a set of Bessel vortices. Additionally, based on linear solution and using variational approximation, the solutions for the full nonlinear system and their ground state phase diagrams are derived, including the vortex states with quantum numbers m = 0, 1, as well as mixed states. In this work, mixed states in spin-1 spin–orbit coupling (SOC) BEC are interpreted for the first time as weighted superpositions of three vortex states. Furthermore, the results also indicate that under strong Zeeman splitting, the system cannot form localized states. The variational solutions align well with numerical simulations, showing stable evolution and meeting the criteria for long-term observation in experiments.

Bessel vortices in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Jun-Zhu Li, Huan-Bo Luo, Lu Li

We investigate the stationary vortex solutions in two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. By introducing the generalized momentum operator, the linear version of the system can be solved exactly and its solutions are a set of the Bessel vortices. Based on the linear version solutions, the stationary vortex solutions of the full nonlinear system are constructed and determined entirely by the variational approximation. The results show that the variational results are in good agreement with the numerical ones. By means of the variational results, the vortex ground-state phase transition between the stationary vortex solutions, the stability, and the unit Bloch vector textures are discussed in detail. The results have the potential to be realized in experiment.

Stable high-order vortices in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Xin-Feng Zhang, Huan-Bo Luo, Josep Amengual i Batle +2 more

The present contribution explores phase transitions that occur in the ground state (GS) of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) under the action of gradient magnetic fields. By solving the corresponding linearized system in an exact fashion, we identify the conditions under which the GS phase transitions occur, thus transforming excited states into GS. The study of the full nonlinear system, including both density-density and spin-spin interactions, is numerically analyzed. For the case of repulsive spin-spin interactions, the results resemble the linear case, while attractive spin-spin interactions lead to the formation of mixed-states near the GS phase-transition points. Additionally, higher-order vortex solitons are found to be stable even in the nonlinear regime. These findings demonstrate that arbitrary winding numbers can be achieved as corresponding to stable GS and thus contributing to the understanding of topological properties in SOC BECs.

Vortex solitons in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates: Effects of the Rashba-Dresselhaus coupling and Zeeman splitting

Hidetsugu Sakaguchi, Eugene Ya. Sherman, Boris A. Malomed

We present an analysis of two-dimensional (2D) matter-wave solitons, governed by the pseudospinor system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with self- and cross attraction, which includes the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the general Rashba-Dresselhaus form, and, separately, the Rashba coupling and the Zeeman splitting. Families of semivortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) solitons are constructed, which exist and are stable in free space, as the SOC terms prevent the onset of the critical collapse and create the otherwise missing ground states in the form of the solitons. The Dresselhaus SOC produces a destructive effect on the vortex solitons, while the Zeeman term tends to convert the MM states into the SV ones, which eventually suffer delocalization. Existence domains and stability boundaries are identified for the soliton families. For physically relevant parameters of the SOC system, the number of atoms in the 2D solitons is limited by ∼1.5×10^{4}. The results are obtained by means of combined analytical and numerical methods.

Energy-level inversion for vortex states in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Huan-Bo Luo, Lu Li, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We investigate vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates under the combined action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), gradient magnetic field, and harmonic-oscillator trapping potential. The linear version of the system is solved exactly. Through the linear-spectrum analysis, we find that by varying the SOC strength and magnetic-field gradient one can perform energy-level inversion. With suitable parameters, initial higher-order vortex states can be made the ground state (GS). The nonlinear system is solved numerically, revealing that the results are consistent with the linear predictions in the case of repulsive intercomponent interactions. On the other hand, intercomponent attraction creates the GS in the form of mixed-mode states in a vicinity of the GS phase-transition points. The spin texture of both vortex- and mixed-mode GSs reveals that they feature the structure of 2D (baby) skyrmions.

Abstract We propose a superposed Bessel optical lattice formed by multiple Bessel optical lattices. The static and rotational structures are formed in the presence of a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interaction in the atomic in Bose–Einstein condensates are investigated, it is shown that the two structures can be manipulated by adjusting the parameters of the superposed Bessel optical lattices. The results show that the SOC interaction has an important effect on the two structures in the superposed Bessel optical lattices, and the SOC interaction can enhance the robustness of the structures. The Gaussian, toroidal and vortex superposition structures in the superposition lattice are presented, the interference processes in the steady state structures are analyzed, and the effects of SOC interactions on the Gaussian vortex and toroidal vortex structures are investigated, and the angular momentum of the vortex states can be increased by SOC interactions.

Three-dimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling and Bessel optical lattices

Hong Li, Si-Liu Xu, Milivoj R. Belić +1 more

Applying a variational approach and numerical analysis to the system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we find three-dimensional (3D) stable solitons in binary atomic Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and out-of-phase linear and nonlinear Bessel optical lattices. We discuss the stability of 3D solitons by utilizing their norm and energy. The introduction of Bessel potentials makes the evolution and collisions of solitons more stable and improves their resistance to collapse. Depending on the strength of the intra- and intercomponent spatial modulation of the nonlinearity and SOC, we find stable solitons of the semivortex and mixed-mode structures. Furthermore, we show that the solitons are stable against small perturbations in propagation and collisions.
