Abstract

Over the last few years, quantum computing has been growing at an exponential pace. Every day, new techniques, frameworks, modeling, and programming languages are emerging that aim to facilitate the development of quantum software, which is key to achieving the promising applications of quantum computing. However, which of these are actively used and the degree of satisfaction of researchers and developers regarding these quantum software frameworks and languages is not known. To address this, we conducted a survey to characterize which modeling tools and which quantum programming languages are used during the quantum software lifecycle. Researchers in academia and industry developers were surveyed, and a total of 57 responses were collected. The results indicate that during quantum software development, some models and diagrams are used to guide development. In addition, the survey results show what quantum programming languages are the most used alongside the classical programming languages employed to build hybrid programs, among other important insights. The implications of this survey are: (i) to find out what the current trends are within quantum software development and (ii) to find out what the needs are of quantum software developers with respect to current modeling and programming languages and tools.

Software Engineering for Quantum Programming: How Far Are We?

Manuel De Stefano, Fabiano Pecorelli, Dario Di Nucci +2 more

Quantum computing is no longer only a scientific interest but is rapidly becoming an industrially available technology that can potentially overcome the limits of classical computation. Over the last years, all major companies have provided frameworks and programming languages that allow developers to create their quantum applications. This shift has led to the definition of a new discipline called quantum software engineering, which is demanded to define novel methods for engineering large-scale quantum applications. While the research community is successfully embracing this call, we notice a lack of systematic investigations into the state of the practice of quantum programming. Understanding the challenges that quantum developers face is vital to precisely define the aims of quantum software engineering. Hence, in this paper, we first mine all the GitHub repositories that make use of the most used quantum programming frameworks currently on the market and then conduct coding analysis sessions to produce a taxonomy of the purposes for which quantum technologies are used. In the second place, we conduct a survey study that involves the contributors of the considered repositories, which aims to elicit the developers' opinions on the current adoption and challenges of quantum programming. On the one hand, the results highlight that the current adoption of quantum programming is still limited. On the other hand, there are many challenges that the software engineering community should carefully consider: these do not strictly pertain to technical concerns but also socio-technical matters.

Quantum software engineering and quantum software development lifecycle: a survey

Kanishk Dwivedi, Majid Haghparast, Tommi Mikkonen

Abstract Quantum software engineering is advancing in the domain of quantum computing research and application, yet the documentation is scattered. The slow transition from Von-Neumann based computation systems to quantum systems, and conserving the fundamental computing principles in software development and software engineering helps in enrichment of quantum software development. The evolution of quantum computing over the past years shows a shift in the domain of classical computation to quantum computation in the years to come. Future applications such as, quantum AI and quantum machine learning will benefit from quantum software engineering. This survey collects and explores the various documentations in the domain of quantum systems and quantum software engineering. The survey provides an in-depth exploration of quantum programming languages, which is combined with explanations of quantum computing’s fundamentals. The review also goes in-depth about quantum software engineering and quantum software life cycle development, outlining the quantum software reuse methodology that is introduced in the quantum software lifecycle development domain.

Quantum Software Components and Platforms: Overview and Quality Assessment

Manuel Serrano, José A. Cruz-Lemus, Ricardo Pérez‐Castillo +1 more

Quantum computing is the latest revolution in computing and will probably come to be seen as an advance as important as the steam engine or the information society. In the last few decades, our understanding of quantum computers has expanded and multiple efforts have been made to create languages, libraries, tools, and environments to facilitate their programming. Nonetheless, quantum computers are complex systems at the bottom of a stack of layers that programmers need to understand. Hence, efforts towards creating quantum programming languages and computing environments that can abstract low-level technology details have become crucial steps to achieve a useful quantum computing technology. However, most of these environments still lack many of the features that would be desirable, such as those outlined in The Talavera Manifesto for Quantum Software Engineering and Programming. For advancing quantum computing, we will need to develop quantum software engineering techniques and tools to ensure the feasibility of this new type of quantum software. To contribute to this goal, this paper provides a review of the main quantum software components and platforms. We also propose a set of quality requirements for the development of quantum software platforms and the conduct of their quality assessment.

A Survey of Quantum Programming Languages: History, Methods, and Tools

Donald Sofge

Quantum computer programming is emerging as a new subject domain from multidisciplinary research in quantum computing, computer science, mathematics (especially quantum logic, lambda calculi, and linear logic), and engineering attempts to build the first non-trivial quantum computer. This paper briefly surveys the history, methods, and proposed tools for programming quantum computers circa late 2007. It is intended to provide an extensive but non-exhaustive look at work leading up to the current state-of-the-art in quantum computer programming. Further, it is an attempt to analyze the needed programming tools for quantum programmers, to use this analysis to predict the direction in which the field is moving, and to make recommendations for further development of quantum programming language tools.

In the contemporary era of scientific and technical innovations, we are witnessing remarkable progress in the realm of quantum computing. Today’s phase is referred to as the second quantum revolution, characterized by ongoing research and progress in the hardware, software, and applications of quantum computers. While the theoretical foundations of quantum computing have been in place for decades, the practical tools and technologies that have emerged in recent years have catapulted this field from theory into reality. This paper provides a brief overview of the fundamental principles of quantum computing and explores the various technologies that support them. From quantum programming languages and simulators to quantum hardware platforms and software development kits, these tools have paved the way for groundbreaking research, experimentation, and the exploration of quantum’s boundless potential. Furthermore, it addresses the current developments, existing challenges, ongoing improvements, and future prospects in this dynamic field.

Quantum Software Engineering Issues and Challenges: Insights from Practitioners

Manuel De Stefano, Fabiano Pecorelli, Fabio Palomba +3 more

Abstract Quantum computing is an emerging field in which theoretical principles are being transformed into practical applications, largely due to the efforts of the developer community. In order to ensure that quantum software engineering continues to advance, it is vital to understand the experiences, challenges, and aspirations of developers. This chapter is a continuation of our previous work, which provided a comprehensive survey exploring the adoption patterns and common challenges in quantum software engineering. In addition to the survey, we conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with practitioners in the field to gain a deeper and more detailed understanding of their perspectives. Through the interviews and survey findings, we have gained nuanced insights into the motivations, hurdles, and outlook of developers toward the rapidly evolving quantum computing landscape. We describe the research methodology in detail, including the tools and techniques used, in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research process. Furthermore, we present critical insights from both the survey and interviews, enriching the narrative with fresh perspectives obtained from the post-publication interviews. This chapter is a blend of academic investigation and real-world practitioner insights, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of quantum software engineering. By illuminating the path for future research and development in this dynamic field, we hope to guide the way toward continued progress and innovation.
