Classical channel bandwidth requirements in continuous variable quantum key distribution systems

Abstract

Abstract The reconciliation method for continuous variable quantum key distribution systems is usually chosen based on its reconciliation efficiency. Nonetheless, one must also consider the requirements of each reconciliation method in terms of the amount of information transmitted on the classical channel. Such may limit the achievable key rates. For instance, multidimensional reconciliation of dimension 8 demands a classical channel bandwidth 43 times greater than that of the quantum channel baud rate. Decreasing the dimension to 4 halves the required bandwidth, allowing for higher quantum channel baud rates and higher key rates for shorter transmission distances, despite the lesser reconciliation performance.

Impact of Limited Classical Channel Bandwidth on the Secret Key Rate of a CV-QKD System

Nuno A. Silva, Margarida Almeida, Nelson Jesus Muga +1 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) can extract secret keys in an efficient and practical manner using off-the-shelf telecommunication equipment. This sets CV-QKD as a key technology for implementation in optical fiber networks already deployed in the field. Notwithstanding, the extraction of secret keys in CV-QKD requires the exchange of information, not only on a quantum channel, but also on an authenticated and public classical channel. The classical channel is required to exchange part of the coherent states to aid with the parameter estimation step to conclude on the secrecy of the extracted key, and to exchange side information essential to the reconciliation step. Here, we study the bandwidth demand of the information exchanged in the classical channel and how it can impact the extraction key rate of a CV-QKD system. The post-processing step consuming the highest bandwidth of the classical channel is the reconciliation step, due to the exchange of the side information. We consider different dimensions for the multidimensional reconciliation demanding different bandwidths on the classical channel and compute the allowed extraction key rate depending on the performance of the method, in terms of frame error rate.

Scalar Reconciliation for Gaussian Modulation of Two-Way Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution.

László Gyöngyösi

The two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) systems allow higher key rates and improved transmission distances over standard telecommunication networks in comparison to the one-way CVQKD protocols. To exploit the real potential of two-way CVQKD systems a robust reconciliation technique is needed. It is currently unavailable, which makes it impossible to reach the real performance of a two-way CVQKD system. The reconciliation process of correlated Gaussian variables is a complex problem that requires either tomography in the physical layer that is intractable in a practical scenario, or high-cost calculations in the multidimensional spherical space with strict dimensional limitations. To avoid these issues, we propose an efficient logical layer-based reconciliation method for two-way CVQKD to extract binary information from correlated Gaussian variables. We demonstrate that by operating on the raw-data level, the noise of the quantum channel can be corrected in the scalar space and the reconciliation can be extended to arbitrary high dimensions. We prove that the error probability of scalar reconciliation is zero in any practical CVQKD scenario, and provides unconditional security. The results allow to significantly improve the currently available key rates and transmission distances of two-way CVQKD. The proposed scalar reconciliation can also be applied in one-way systems as well, to replace the existing reconciliation schemes.

Multidimensional Reconciliation in Continuous-Variable QKD: Review, Coding Schemes, and Open Source Simulation

Lucien Martial, Alexis Rosio, Eleni Diamanti +2 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) requires highly efficient reconciliation techniques to operate at low signal-to-noise ratios and long distances. Multidimensional reconciliation addresses this challenge by transforming the physical Gaussian quantum channel into a virtual binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel, enabling the use of modern errorcorrecting codes. In this work, we review the principles of multidimensional reconciliation, with a particular focus on high-dimensional constructions beyond the algebraic dimensions 1, 2, 4, 8. We describe the construction of the virtual channel, discuss practical coding schemes for reverse reconciliation, and analyse their integration with linear error-correcting codes. We also present an opensource simulation framework, HDirac, implementing multidimensional reconciliation for arbitrary dimensions, and use it to evaluate state-of-the-art LDPC codes. The results highlight key trade-offs between dimension, reconciliation efficiency, and frame error rate, providing practical guidance for CV-QKD system design.

Efficient rate-adaptive reconciliation for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Xiangyu Wang, Yichen Zhang, Zhengyu Li +3 more

Information reconciliation protocol has a significant effect on the secret key rate and maximal transmission distance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems. We propose an efficient rate-adaptive reconciliation protocol suitable for practical CV-QKD systems with time-varying quantum channel. This protocol changes the code rate of multi-edge type low density parity check codes, by puncturing (increasing the code rate) and shortening (decreasing the code rate) techniques, to enlarge the correctable signal-to-noise ratios regime, thus improves the overall reconciliation efficiency comparing to the original fixed rate reconciliation protocol. We verify our rate-adaptive reconciliation protocol with three typical code rate, i.e., 0.1, 0.05 and 0.02, the reconciliation efficiency keep around 93.5%, 95.4% and 96.4% for different signal-to-noise ratios, which shows the potential of implementing high-performance CV-QKD systems using single code rate matrix.

Low-Dimensional Reconciliation for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution

László Gyöngyösi, Sándor Imre

We propose an efficient logical layer-based reconciliation method for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) to extract binary information from correlated Gaussian variables. We demonstrate that by operating on the raw-data level, the noise of the quantum channel can be corrected in the low-dimensional (scalar) space, and the reconciliation can be extended to arbitrary dimensions. The CVQKD systems allow an unconditionally secret communication over standard telecommunication networks. To exploit the real potential of CVQKD a robust reconciliation technique is needed. It is currently unavailable, which makes it impossible to reach the real performance of the CVQKD protocols. The reconciliation is a post-processing step separated from the transmission of quantum states, which is aimed to derive the secret key from the raw data. The reconciliation process of correlated Gaussian variables is a complex problem that requires either tomography in the physical layer that is intractable in a practical scenario, or high-cost calculations in the multidimensional spherical space with strict dimensional limitations. To avoid these issues, we define the low-dimensional reconciliation. We prove that the error probability of one-dimensional reconciliation is zero in any practical CVQKD scenario, and provides unconditional security. The results allow for significantly improving the currently available key rates and transmission distances of CVQKD.
