Abstract

The best carrier for quantum information transmission is light signal, which has a fast propagation speed and can carry a large amount of information. However, during the propagation of light, dispersion effect and diffraction effect can cause quantum information to be distorted to a certain extent. On the contrary, optical solitons are formed due to the balance between the system’s dispersion (diffraction) effect and nonlinear effect, and they exhibit very high stability and fidelity. Therefore, they have received widespread attention in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) media with ultracold atoms. However, cold atomic gas media require extremely low operating temperatures, and the performances of the materials are difficult to control precisely. These factors are unfavorable for the miniaturization and integration of future information devices, thus significantly limiting their practical applications. Semiconductor quantum dot media, on the other hand, possess advantages such as discrete energy level structures and spectral properties similar to those of cold atomic gases, longer decoherence times, larger electric dipole moments, more significant nonlinear optical effects, and easy integration, making them an ideal alternative to cold atomic media. In this work, semiconductor quantum dots are coupled with optical fibers, the most common carrier in optical communication, to explore the formation, storage, and retrieval of temporal optical solitons in the coupled system. The results show that due to the tunneling-induced transparency effect between dots in semiconductor quantum dot molecules, light absorption in the system is greatly suppressed. At the same time, the transverse confinement of the nanofiber can enhance the interaction between light and the system, and the enhanced nonlinear response of the system can balance the dispersion effect, resulting in stable temporal optical solitons. Further research indicates that by turning on and off the inter-dot tunneling coupling, the high-efficiency and high-fidelity storage and retrieval of optical solitons can be realized in the system. These findings have certain guiding significance and potential application value for the processing all-optical information in solid quantum materials.

Effect of inter-dot tunneling coupling on soliton dynamical behaviors in four-level triple quantum dot EIT medium

Yin Wang, Ren-Ying Wang, Qiao Chen +1 more

Soliton, which can travel over long distance without attenuation or shape change due to the balance of the interplay between dispersion (or diffraction) and nonlinearity in nonlinear medium, becomes a good information carrier in quantum information processing and transmission. Up to now, the study on the optical solitons mainly focuses on ultra-cold atomic electromagnetic induction transparency (EIT) medium. This is mainly because ultra-cold atomic system can generate strong nonlinear effect under low light excitation. However, for the practical application, it is a big challenge to control accurately the optical soliton dynamics in the atomic EIT medium due to its low temperature (which approaches to absolute zero) and rarefaction. Fortunately, with the maturity of semiconductor quantum production technology, quantum dots have extensive application prospect in quantum information processing and transmission. So, in the paper, we study the optical soliton dynamics in a four-level asymmetric array-type three-quantum-dot EIT medium. Based on the current experimental results, we first propose a four-level asymmetric array-type three-quantum-dot EIT model. Subsequently, by using amplitude variable approach combined with multi-scale method, we study analytically the propagation of a probe pulse in this system. It is shown that when one (the another) inter-dot tunneling coupling is turned on (off), only a single transparency window appears in the center range of the probe field detuning. Only if two inter-dot tunneling couplings are turned on will two transparent windows be distributed on both sides of the central region of the probe field detuning. And the width of the single transparent window or the widths of two transparent windows become wider with the strength of the inter-dot tunneling coupling increasing. For the nonlinear case, by choosing appropriate parameters in the area of the transparency window, the stable propagation of soliton can be realized. Interestingly, we find that the strength of the inter-dot tunneling coupling has an important effect on the soliton dynamic behaviors. In the case that one (the another) inter-dot tunneling coupling is turned on (off), with the increase of strength of the inter-dot tunneling coupling, the velocity of the soliton exhibits a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, and the amplitude of the soliton presents a increasing trend for ever. For the case that two inter-dot tunneling couplings are turned on, with the strength of the two inter-dot tunneling coupling increasing, the velocity of the soliton presents a decreasing trend for ever, while the amplitude of the soliton exhibits a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. Thus, the amplitude modulation effect of optical soliton can be realized in semiconductor quantum dot devices.

Adjusting amplitude of the stored optical solitons by inter-dot tunneling coupling in triple quantum dot molecules

Yin Wang, Sijie Zhou, Yong-He Deng +1 more

We study the propagation properties of a probe field in an aligned asymmetric triple quantum dot molecule with both sides inter-dot tunneling coupling effect. It is shown that the probe field can form optical soliton due to the destructive quantum interference induced by the quantum inter-dot tunneling coupling effect. Interestingly, these optical solitons can be stored and retrieved by adjusting single or double inter-dot tunneling coupling effect, different from that light memory in the ultra-cold atom system. Furthermore, we also find that the amplitude of the stored optical soliton can be adjusted by the strength of the single or double inter-dot tunneling coupling. It is possible to improve the stability and the fidelity of the optical information in the process of the storage and retrieval in semiconductor quantum dots devices.

Storage and retrieval of ultraslow soliton at optical nanofiber interface via electromagnetically induced transparency

Yong Zhou, Can Yi, Qi Liu +2 more

We theoretically investigate the optical memory in a nanofiber system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a nonlinear region. Because of the tight transverse confinement, the light-atom interaction is significantly enhanced and thus, the EIT effect is enhanced. The inhomogeneous mode field distribution contributes spatially to the EIT dispersion. We develop a systematic analysis method to study the nonlinearity of the system and prove that the optical soliton is available in the system and can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and stability. We also study a strategy to optimize the soliton optical memory. The results obtained in this study are promising for practical applications of all-optical information processing.

Controlling of dark or bright soliton type in a cascade-type electromagnetically induced transparency semiconductor quantum well by the coupling longitudinal optical phonons

Hong Tang, Denglong Wang, Weixi Zhang +2 more

In the past few years, with developing the technology of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and improving the semiconductor technology, it has become possible to realize the application of optical soliton to communication device. Studies show the reduction of group velocity of the optical soliton in EIT medium under weak driving condition, which possibly realizes the storing of optical pulses in information storage. More importantly, semiconductor quantum wells have the inherent advantages such as large electric dipole moments of the transitions, high nonlinear optical coefficients, small size, easily operating and integrating. So it is considered to be the most potential EIT medium to realize the application of quantum devices. The optical soliton behavior in the semiconductor quantum well is studied, which can provide a certain reference value for the practical application of information transmission and processing together quantum devices. Although there has been a series of researches on both linear and nonlinear optical properties in semiconductor quantum wells structures, few publications report the effects of the cross-coupling longitude-optical phonon (CCLOP) relaxation on its linear and nonlinear optical properties. However, to our knowledge, the electron-longitude-optical phonon scattering rate can be realized experimentally by varying the sub-picosecond range to the order of a picosecond. According to this, we in the paper study the effects of the CCLOP relaxation on its linear and nonlinear optical properties in a cascade-type three-level EIT semiconductor quantum well. According to the current experimental conditions, we first propose a cascade-type three-level EIT semiconductor quantum well model. And in this model we consider the longitudinal optical phonons coupling between the bond state and anti-bond state. Subsequently, by using the multiple-scale method, we analytically study the dynamical properties of solitons in the cascade-type three-level EIT semiconductor quantum well with the CCRLOP. It is shown that when the CCRLOP strength is smaller, there exhibits the dark soliton in the EIT semiconductor quantum well. Only if the strength of the CCRLOP is larger, will in the system there exists bright soliton. That is to say, with increasing the strength of the CCRLOP, the soliton type of the system is converted from dark to bright soliton little by little. So, the temporal soliton type can be effectively controlled by the strength of the CCRLOP. In addition, we also find that the group velocity of the soliton can also be controlled by the strength of CCRLOP and the control light. These results may provide a theoretical basis for manipulating experimentally the dynamics of soliton in semiconductor quantum wells.

Storage of fiber-guided light in a nanofiber-trapped ensemble of cold atoms

C. Sayrin, C. Clausen, B. Albrecht +2 more

Tapered optical fibers with a nanofiber waist are versatile tools for interfacing light and matter. In this context, laser-cooled atoms trapped in the evanescent field surrounding the optical nanofiber are of particular interest: They exhibit both long ground-state coherence times and efficient coupling to fiber-guided fields. Here, we demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency, slow light, and the storage of fiber-guided optical pulses in an ensemble of cold atoms trapped in a nanofiber-based optical lattice. We measure a slow-down of light pulses to group velocities of 50 m/s. Moreover, we store optical pulses at the single photon level and retrieve them on demand in the fiber after 2 microseconds with an overall efficiency of (3.0 +/- 0.4) %. Our results show that nanofiber-based interfaces for cold atoms have great potential for the realization of building blocks for future optical quantum information networks.

Ultraslow optical solitons and their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type atomic system

Yang Chen, Zhengyang Bai, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain stable nonlinear optical pulses and realize their storage and retrieval in an ultracold ladder-type three-level atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency. Based on Maxwell-Bloch equations we derive a nonlinear equation governing the evolution of probe field envelope, and show that optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity and extremely low generation power can be created in the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such ultraslow optical solitons can be stored and retrieved by switching off and on a control field. Due to the balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, the ultraslow optical solitons are robust during propagation, and hence their storage and retrieval are more desirable than that of linear optical pulses. This raises the possibility of realizing the storage and retrieval of light and quantum information by using solitonic pulses.
