The 2012 Gordon Conference on Correlated Electron Systems will present cutting-edge research on emergent properties arising from strong electronic correlations. While we expect the discussion at the meeting to be wide-ranging, given the breadth of the title subject matter, we have chosen several topics to be the particular focus of the talks. These are New Developments in Single and Bilayer Graphene, Topological States of Matter, including Topological Insulators and Spin Liquids, the Interplay Between Magnetism and Unconventional Superconductivity, and Quantum Critical Phenomena in Metallic Systems. We also plan to have shorter sessions on Systems Far From Equilibrium, Low Dimensional Electron Fluids, and New Directions (which will primarily focus on new experimental methodologies and their interpretation).
The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Gordon Research Conference on Quantum Control of Light and Matter -August 3-8, 2003 was held at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA, August 3-8, 2003.The Conference was well-attended with 126 participants (attendees list attached). The attendees represented the spectrum of endeavor in this field coming from academia, industry, and government laboratories, both U.S. and foreign scientists, senior researchers, young investigators, and students. In designing the formal speakers program, emphasis was placed on current unpublished research and discussion of the future target areas in this field. There was a conscious effort to stimulate lively discussion about the key issues in the field today.Time for formal presentations was limited in the interest of group discussions. In order that more scientists could communicate their most recent results, poster presentation time was scheduled.Attached is a copy of the formal schedule and speaker program and the poster program. In addition to these formal interactions, "free time" was scheduled to allow informal discussions.Such discussions are fostering new collaborations and joint efforts in the field.I want to personally thank you for your support of this Conference. As you know, in the interest of promoting the presentation of unpublished and frontierbreaking research, Gordon
The 2010 Gordon Conference on Correlated Electron Systems will present cutting-edge research on emergent properties arising from strong electronic correlations. The Conference will feature a wide range of topics, such as the role of topology in condensed matter systems, quantum Hall interferometry and non-Abelian statistics, quantum criticality, metal-insulator transition, quantum effects in conductivity, Dirac quasiparticles, and superconductivity in cuprates and pnictides. In addition, we are reserving two sessions for new developments in this field that may arise in the coming year. The Conference will bring together a collection of investigators who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. We intend to have talks by established leaders in the field and also by young researchers who have made seminal contributions to various aspects of correlated electron physics, The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.

Goal:The goal of this project is to gain theoretical insight into magnetism in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for multi-orbital Mott insulators.Inspired by the exact solution of the Kitaev model that harbors a quantum spin liquid with novel excitations and struck by its relevance for materials with anisotropic orbital interactions, the research will explore various new classes of 4d and 5d transition metal oxides and make Testable predictions for three experiments: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) to probe orbital ordering and pump-probe experiments to probe quantum dynamics will test the validity of these models for materials. Significant Achievements:Starting with all electron Hamiltonians, we derived minimal effective magnetic models. This description allowed us to understand the role played by orbital frustration, even in the absence of any geometric frustration, in creating orbitally ordered as well as spin-orbital liquid phases.Orbital frustration arises primarily from the directional or anisotropic nature of d-orbitals in contrast to the isotropic nature of the spin degree of freedom. These models were investigated by a variety of theoretical and numerical methods, including exact diagonalization, mean field theories, density matrix renormalization group, and quantum Monte Carlo methods. We discuss the main results below encapsulated in 12 papers, including several in high impact journals, during this grant period. They cover a range of topics from quantum spin liquids to superconductivity.
A conference on the advances in many-electron theory was held recently. The meeting was attended by renowned experts in the field, including 40 senior faculty from India and abroad, and about 25 students from India. Several topics concerning many-body structure with emphasis on multi-reference theories and inclusion of relativistic effects, dynamics with special emphasis on non-adiabatic effects as well on density functional theory and some applications of the theory were covered during the conference.
