Abstract

Abstract A scheme is proposed for achieving robust population inversion in five‐level systems by means of composite pulses. An example of such a system consists of the magnetic sublevels with angular momenta and . Through elaborately constructing the relative phases of pulse pairs, the composite sequences perform well in suppressing the uncorrelated pulse area errors. In particular, the five pulse‐pair sequence possesses good robustness and a short evolution time. The composite sequences are further designed to compensate for a single type of pulse area errors to any desired order. This work provides a high‐efficiency way for robust quantum state manipulation in five‐level systems.

Robust population inversion in three-level systems by composite pulses

Cheng Zhang, Yang Liu, Zhi‐Cheng Shi +3 more

In this work, we exploit the idea of composite pulses to achieve robust population inversion in a three-level quantum system. The scheme is based on the modulation of the coupling strength, while the other physical parameters remain unchanged. The composite pulses sequence is designed by vanishing high-order error terms, and can compensate the systematic errors to any desired order. In particular, this scheme keeps a good performance under the disturbance of waveform deformations. This trait ensures that population inversion can be nearly obtained even when the pulse sequence has a short jump delay. As an example, we employ the designed composite pulse sequence to prepare the $W$ state in a robust manner in the superconducting circuits. The numerical results show that the fidelity can still maintain a high level in a decoherence environment.

Universal composite pulses for robust quantum state engineering in four-level systems

Zhi‐Cheng Shi, Jian-Hui Wang, Cheng Zhang +2 more

We propose a protocol for robust quantum state engineering using composite pulses (CPs) in four-level systems. The analytical expression of the propagator is derived for the implementation of universal single-qubit gates and the maximum superposition state. By carefully designing the relative phases between pulses, the CP sequences can compensate for the pulse area error to any desired order. We present two classes of CP sequences, one generating robust population inversion and the other generating robust superposition states. As applications, we employ the well-designed CP sequences to achieve the conversion of the W and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states with high fidelity in a Rydberg atomic system. It is shown that the CP sequences yield excellent robustness with respect to the pulse area errors, and they possess a short evolution time.

Composite pulses with errant phases

Boyan T. Torosov, Nikolay V. Vitanov

Composite pulses---sequences of pulses with well-defined relative phases---are an efficient, robust, and flexible technique for coherent control of quantum systems. Composite sequences can compensate for a variety of experimental errors in the driving field (e.g., in the pulse amplitude, duration, detuning, chirp, etc.) or in the quantum system and its environment (e.g., inhomogeneous broadening, stray electric or magnetic fields, unwanted couplings, etc.). The control parameters are the relative phases between the constituent pulses in the composite sequence, an accurate control over which is required in all composite sequences reported hitherto. In this paper, we introduce two types of composite pulse sequences which, in addition to error compensation in the basic experimental parameters, compensate for systematic errors in the composite phases. In the first type of such composite sequences, which compensate for pulse area errors, relative phase errors of over 10% can be tolerated with reasonably short sequences while maintaining the fidelity above the 99.99% quantum computing benchmark. In the second type of composite sequences, which compensate for simultaneous pulse area and detuning errors, relative phase errors of over 5% can be compensated.

Composite pulses for optimal robust control in two-level systems

Hai-Ning Wu, Cheng Zhang, Jie Song +2 more

In this work, we put forward an approach of constructing the optimal composite pulse sequence for robust population transfer in two-level systems. This approach is quite universal and applicable to a variety of systems, because the modulation parameters of composite pulses are obtained by minimizing the homemade cost function rather than nullifying the error coefficients of the transition probability. Specifically, we design different forms of the cost function for implementing optimal robustness with respect to the single or multiple errors. When slightly adjusting the constraints of the cost function, this approach can be easily extended to achieve arbitrary population transfer. The numerical results demonstrate that the optimized sequences are immune from various systematic errors, allowing us to produce a broadening excitation range of the transition probability. Therefore, this work offers an optimal robust design for controlling quantum states in error-prone environments.

Robust coherent control in three-level quantum systems using composite pulses

Hang Xu, Xue-Ke Song, Dong Wang +1 more

Here, we focus on using composite pulses to realize high-robustness and high-fidelity coherent control in three-level quantum systems. We design the dynamic parameters (Rabi frequency and detuning) for three-level Hamiltonians for high-fidelity quantum state control using five well-known coherent control techniques including a composite adiabatic passage (CAP). Furthermore, we compare their performance against the Rabi frequency and systematic errors, and accordingly show that the CAP is the most robust against them. It features a broad range of high efficiencies above 99.9%. Thus, it provides an accurate approach for manipulating the evolution of quantum states in three-level quantum systems.

Universal composite pulses for efficient population inversion with an arbitrary excitation profile

Genko T. Genov, Marcel Hain, Nikolay V. Vitanov +1 more

We introduce a method to rotate arbitrarily the excitation profile of universal broadband composite pulse sequences for robust high-fidelity population inversion. These pulses compensate deviations in any experimental parameter (e.g., pulse amplitude, pulse duration, detuning from resonance, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc.) and are applicable with any pulse shape. The rotation allows one to achieve higher-order robustness to any combination of pulse area and detuning errors at no additional cost. The latter can be particularly useful, e.g., when detuning errors are due to Stark shifts that are correlated with the power of the applied field. We demonstrate the efficiency and universality of these composite pulses by experimental implementation for rephasing of atomic coherences in a ${\text{Pr}}^{3+}\text{:}{\text{Y}}_{2}{\text{SiO}}_{5}$ crystal.
