Abstract

Here, we show photon pair generation from ring resonator and waveguide structures in a hybrid silicon–BTO on an insulator platform with a pulsed pump. Our analysis of single photon and coincidence generation rates show that spontaneous four-wave mixing is comparable to that expected from SOI devices with similar characteristics and find γeff of (14.7 ± 1.3) and (2.0 ± 0.3) MHz/mW2 for ring resonator and waveguide structures, respectively.

Photon Pair Generation in an Amorphous Silicon Micro-ring Resonator

Elizabeth Hemsley, Damien Bonneau, Gary F. Sinclair +12 more

The high Kerr coefficient of amorphous silicon makes it a promising material for generating photons on chip via spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM), for applications in quantum photonics. Previous work shows high photon generation rates in a-Si waveguides, [1], and here we expand this study to investigate micro-ring resonator photon sources, which have a small footprint and can produce photons with high spectral purity, ideal for quantum interference. We compare SFWM generation rates in an a-Si micro-ring resonator to a straight waveguide, in both continuous wave and pulsed pump regimes.

Photon pair generation in a silicon micro-ring resonator with reverse bias enhancement

Erman Engin, Damien Bonneau, Chandra M. Natarajan +12 more

Photon sources are fundamental components for any quantum photonic technology. The ability to generate high count-rate and low-noise correlated photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion using bulk crystals has been the cornerstone of modern quantum optics. However, future practical quantum technologies will require a scalable integration approach, and waveguide-based photon sources with high-count rate and low-noise characteristics will be an essential part of chip-based quantum technologies. Here, we demonstrate photon pair generation through spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon micro-ring resonator, reporting separately a maximum coincidence-to-accidental (CAR) ratio of 602 ± 37 (for a generation rate of 827kHz), and a maximum photon pair generation rate of 123 MHz ± 11 kHz (with a CAR value of 37). To overcome free-carrier related performance degradations we have investigated reverse biased p-i-n structures, demonstrating an improvement in the pair generation rate by a factor of up to 2 with negligible impact on CAR.

Ultra-low power generation of twin photons in a compact silicon ring resonator

Stefano Azzini, Davide Grassani, Michael John Strain +6 more

We demonstrate efficient generation of correlated photon pairs by spontaneous four wave mixing in a 5 μm radius silicon ring resonator in the telecom band around 1550 nm. By optically pumping our device with a 200 μW continuous wave laser, we obtain a pair generation rate of 0.2 MHz and demonstrate photon time correlations with a coincidence-to-accidental ratio as high as 250. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and show the potential of silicon micro-ring resonators as room temperature sources for integrated quantum optics applications.

Quantitative study of Silicon Waveguides for the Generation of Quantum Correlated Photon Pairs Bridging Mid-Infrared and Telecom Bands

Abhishek Kumar Pandey, Deepak Jain, Catherine Baskiotis

Sources of quantum correlated photons pairs bridging the 3um-4um Mid-infrared (MIR) band and Telecom/Near-Infrared/Visible band are of high importance for quantum technologies. Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion is generally used for realizing such sources, but requires costly implementation platforms with reduced versatility. Here, we explore the potentialities of Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing (SFWM) in all-solid Silicon On Insulator (SOI) waveguides thanks to an experimentally validated model and propose designs ensuring the production of correlated photon pairs bridging the 3um-4um Mid-infrared band and Telecom C-band. Choosing a pump with a wavelength in the range 2100nm-2210nm and a pulse duration of 5ps, we quantitatively performed simulations targeting a probability of photon pair generation per pulse of 0.05, and we found realistic conditions of utilization (2cm-length straight waveguides, intra-modal Four Wave Mixing with the fundamental TE00 mode) with a pump peak power in between 9.2mW and 32mW. A first design (wCOM) reaches a signal wavelength as high as 3.905um, which is situated in an atmospheric transparency window, while maintaining an idler in the Telecom C-band, making it of high interest for atmospheric Quantum Key Distribution. Two other designs wCH4 and wNO2 aim precise CH4 and NO2 gas sensing with a signal wavelength of 3265nm and 3461nm respectively. In terms of signal/idler wavelength separation, wCOM attains the value of 2364nm which is well above the current record of ~1125nm obtained in quantum regime with SFWM in all-solid SOI waveguides.
