Abstract

An entanglement-based continuous variable (CV) QKD scheme is proposed, performing information reconciliation over an entanglement-assisted link. The same entanglement generation source is used in both raw key transmission and information reconciliation. The entanglement generation source employs only low-cost devices operated in the C-band. The proposed CV-QKD scheme with information reconciliation over an entanglement-assisted link significantly outperforms the corresponding CV-QKD scheme with information reconciliation over an authenticated public channel. It also outperforms the CV-QKD scheme in which a classical free-space optical communication link is used to perform information reconciliation. An experimental demonstration over the free-space optical testbed established at the University of Arizona campus indicates that the proposed CV-QKD can operate in strong turbulence regimes. To improve the secret key rate performance further, adaptive optics is used.

Rate-Adaptive Reconciliation for Experimental Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution With Discrete Modulation Over a Free-Space Optical Link

Kadir Gümüş, João Frazão, Vincent van Vliet +8 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has been proposed as a method for securely exchanging keys to protect against the security concerns caused by potential advancements in quantum computing. In addition to optical fibre transmission, the free-space optical (FSO) channel is an interesting channel for CV-QKD, as it is possible to share keys over this channel wirelessly. The instability of the FSO channel caused by turbulence-induced fading, however, can cause a degradation in the system's performance. One of the most important aspects of CV-QKD is the reconciliation step, which significantly impacts the performance of the CV-QKD system. Hence, rate-adaptive reconciliation is necessary for CV-QKD over FSO to combat the fluctuations in the channel and improve secret key rates (SKRs). Therefore, in this paper, we simulate the impact of discrete modulation on the reconciliation efficiency and consider the use of$d$-dimensional reconciliation with$d > 8$to mitigate this impact, improving reconciliation efficiencies by up to 3.4%. We validate our results by experimentally demonstrating CV-QKD over a turbulent FSO link and demonstrate SKR gains by up to 165%. Furthermore, we optimise the reconciliation efficiency for FSO links, achieving additional SKR gains of up to 7.6%.

Information reconciliation (IR) for continuous variable quantum key distribution (QKD) over free space optics (FSO) channel

F. Daneshgaran, M. Mondin, Shlomi Arnon +2 more

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a communication method which exchanges secret keys using cryptographic protocols involving elements from quantum science. Continuous Variable (CV) QKD is a method to implement key exchange using sampling of Gaussian signals. Reconciliation in CV-QKD is fundamentally realized via coding of the Alice or Bob binary labels of the Gaussian samples using either one-way or interactive communications between the parties, Alice and Bob, over a public authenticated channel. We assume that the communication is performed through an Optical Wireless (OW) or Free Space Optics (FSO) channel. In that case the received signal suffers from stochastic fading due to pointing jitter or atmospheric turbulence. As a result of the channel fading and noise Alice and Bob Gaussian samples will not match. Information Reconciliation (IR) is the phase of the CV-QKD protocol that makes sure that Alice and Bob agree on a common and identical labeling of their samples, i.e. agree on a common stream of bits that we denote as “reconciled key.” The information reconciliation in CV-QKD could be done by one-way or two-way channel coding to correct the actual labels so that they do match. To do so Bob generates a sequence of parity bits using a systematic code. These bits are sent to Alice over an authenticated public channel. Alice then uses her own sequence of labels she obtains after quantization with the redundancy provided by Bob to recover Bob’s binary sequence. In this work we analyze the problem of information reconciliation for continuous variable quantum key distribution over a free space optics channel.

High-efficiency rate-adaptive reconciliation in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Hongzhao Yang, Shuaishuai Liu, Shenshen Yang +3 more

In continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD), the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate of the information reconciliation have a significant impact on the secret key rate. For a fixed-rate multiedge-type low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate will inevitably vary due to the fluctuations of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the CV QKD system, which degrades the performance of the system. We propose a high-efficiency rate-adaptive information reconciliation scheme by combining raptorlike (RL) LDPC codes with the addition of trusted noises. We establish the model of adding trusted noises and combine it with the RL LDPC codes to optimize the secret key rate under the time-varying channel. The simulation results show that our scheme can maintain a high reconciliation efficiency of more than 94.4% and a low frame error rate within 15% fluctuation range of the SNR. Furthermore, we implement the hardware acceleration of the proposed rate-adaptive scheme on a graphics processing unit and achieve a decoding throughput of 65.5 Mbits/s by optimizing the storage of the parity-check matrix. Our results are useful for the practical CV QKD under the realistic time-varying channel.

Efficient rate-adaptive reconciliation for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Xiangyu Wang, Yichen Zhang, Zhengyu Li +3 more

Information reconciliation protocol has a significant effect on the secret key rate and maximal transmission distance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems. We propose an efficient rate-adaptive reconciliation protocol suitable for practical CV-QKD systems with time-varying quantum channel. This protocol changes the code rate of multi-edge type low density parity check codes, by puncturing (increasing the code rate) and shortening (decreasing the code rate) techniques, to enlarge the correctable signal-to-noise ratios regime, thus improves the overall reconciliation efficiency comparing to the original fixed rate reconciliation protocol. We verify our rate-adaptive reconciliation protocol with three typical code rate, i.e., 0.1, 0.05 and 0.02, the reconciliation efficiency keep around 93.5%, 95.4% and 96.4% for different signal-to-noise ratios, which shows the potential of implementing high-performance CV-QKD systems using single code rate matrix.

Multidimensional reconciliation scheme using deep learning in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Yan Feng, Jiangliang Jin, Kun Zhang +4 more

Abstract Information reconciliation is a significant stage in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems as it directly affects the performance of the CV-QKD systems including secret key rate and secure transmission distance. This paper proposes a multidimensional reconciliation scheme using deep learning in CV-QKD systems. Firstly, different neural networks are constructed to obtain the norm information. Secondly, a multidimensional reconciliation scheme with deep learning assisted norm information is proposed which no longer needs to transmit the norm information through the authenticated classical public channel. Finally, simulation results and performance analysis show that, compared with the traditional multidimensional reconciliation scheme, the multidimensional reconciliation scheme with deep learning assisted norm information can decrease the communication traffic to a certain extent.

Practical Methods for Distance-Adaptive Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution

Jonas Berl, Utku Akin, Erdem Eray Cil +2 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is a promising quantum-safe alternative to classical asymmetric cryptography that enables two authenticated parties to establish a shared secret over a potentially eavesdropped quantum channel. A key step in CV-QKD post-processing is information reconciliation, which leverages forward error correction (FEC) techniques to extract identical bit strings from noisy correlated data. In this work, we analyze the strict limitations on operating distance that are imposed by constant-rate FEC, severely limiting the practicability of CV-QKD systems in deployed optical networks. To overcome the distance limitations, we evaluate three strategies: (i) tuning modulation variance, (ii) adding controlled amounts of trusted detector loss, and (iii) the use of rate-adaptive FEC. All approaches are validated experimentally, compared in terms of performance, and we discuss implementation aspects. Our results show that while methods (i) and (ii) extend the operational distance of constant-rate FEC without the need for additional hardware components, they incur a significant penalty in secret key rate (SKR). In contrast, rate-adaptive FEC enables CV-QKD operation with performance close to the asymptotic SKR over a wide range of distances, provided that the reconciliation efficiency is chosen appropriately.
