Abstract

We designed a digital coherent continuous variable quantum key distribution system achieving higher spectral efficiency by extracting timing information from a polarization-multiplexed QPSK reference signal and demonstrated the feasibility of distributing a secret key over a 100 km SMF link.

Quantum key distribution over 25 km using a fibre set-up based on continuous variables

Jérôme Lodewyck, Matthieu R. Bloch, Simon Fossier +4 more

We describe a continuous variable quantum key distribution set-up allowing for secret key rates over 2 kbits/s on a 25 km fibre link. The signal and the phase reference are time-multiplexed in the same fibre. The system is designed to be operated on an installed fibre link. The reconciliation step is performed using fast and efficient LDPC error correcting codes.

Field test of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution prototype

Simon Fossier, Eleni Diamanti, Thierry Debuisschert +3 more

We have designed and realized a prototype that implements a continuous-variable quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol based on coherent states and reverse reconciliation. The system uses time and polarization multiplexing for optimal transmission and detection of the signal and phase reference, and employs sophisticated error-correction codes for reconciliation. The security of the system is guaranteed against general coherent eavesdropping attacks. The performance of the prototype was tested over preinstalled optical fibres as part of a quantum cryptography network combining different QKD technologies. The stable and automatic operation of the prototype over 57 h yielded an average secret key distribution rate of 8 kbit s −1 over a 3 dB loss optical fibre, including the key extraction process and all quantum and classical communication. This system is therefore ideal for securing communications in metropolitan size networks with high-speed requirements.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on high-rate phase reference

Jinjing Shi, Fang Zhou, Shuhui Chen +2 more

Abstract We propose a high-rate phase reference scheme for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). In this scheme, a transmission mode has been employed in which several quantum signal pulses are accompanied by a pair of reference pulses, calibrating the measurement bases of the communicating parties. Within a certain range, and with the ratio between quantum signal pulses and reference pulses increased, the secret key rate approaches that of the traditional CV-QKD scheme (which is a scheme without phase noise). Compared with general CV-QKD schemes, which adopt the transmission mode of a quantum signal pulse plus a pair of reference pulses, this scheme has a higher spectral efficiency, enabling high-rate CV-QKD. In addition, we reduce the interference of strong reference pulses with weak quantum signal pulses by using a pair of polarization beam splitters with a dynamic polarization controller. Simulation results demonstrate that we achieve a higher secret key rate than the self-coherent phase reference scheme. This provides a pathway towards large-scale quantum communication networks.

High-performance long-distance discrete-modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Yan Feng Tian, Yu Zhang, Shuaishuai Liu +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate a high-rate discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 80-km standard single-mode fiber with a 2.5 Gbaud, 16-symbol, two-ring constellation. With the help of well-designed digital signal processing algorithms, the excess noise of the system can be effectively suppressed. The achieved secret key rates are 49.02 Mbits/s, 11.86 Mbits/s, and 2.11 Mbits/s over 25-km, 50-km, and 80-km optical fiber, respectively, and achieve 67.4%, 70.0%, and 66.5% of the secret key rate performance of a Gaussian-modulated protocol. Our work shows that it is feasible to build a high-performance, long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with only a small constellation size.

Investigation of Polarization Division Multiplexed CVQKD Based on Coherent Optical Transmission Structure

Wenpeng Gao, Jianjun Tang, Tianqi Dou +3 more

Employing commercial off-the-shelf coherent optical transmission components and methods to design a continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) system is a promising trend of achieving QKD with high security key rate (SKR) and cost-effectiveness. In this paper, we explore CVQKD system based on the widely used polarization division multiplexed coherent optical transmission structure and pilot-aided digital signal processing methods. A simplified pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme based on frequency division multiplexing (FDM) is proposed, which introduces less total excess noise than classical pilot-aided schemes based on time division multiplexing (TDM). Besides, the two schemes of training symbol (TS)-aided equalization are compared to find the optimal strategy for TS insertion, where the scheme based on block insertion strategy can provide the SKR gain of around 29%, 22%, and 15% compared with the scheme based on fine-grained insertion strategy at the transmission distance of 5 km, 25 km and 50 km, respectively. The joint optimization of pilot-aided and TS-aided methods in this work can provide reference for achieving CVQKD system with high SKR and low complexity in metropolitan-scale applications.
