Abstract

We consider a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with on-site double-well potentials and study the effect of nearest-neighbor repulsion and cavity-mediated long-range interactions by calculating the ground-state phase diagrams with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We show that when the intrawell repulsion is as strong as the on-site repulsion, a dimerized Mott-insulator phase appears at the tip of the dimerized density-wave phase for a density of one particle per double well. Furthermore, we find a dimerized Haldane-insulator phase in the double-well BHM with nearest-neighbor interaction, which is identical to a dimerized BHM with repulsive interactions up to the third neighbor.

Haldane insulator in the 1D nearest-neighbor extended Bose-Hubbard model with cavity-mediated long-range interactions

Johannes Sicks, Heiko Rieger

Abstract In the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter emerges, the Haldane insulator. Bose-Hubbard models with cavity-mediated global range interactions display phase diagrams, which are very similar to those with nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions, but the Haldane phase remains elusive there. Here we study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and cavity-mediated global-range interactions and scrutinize the existence of a Haldane Insulator phase. With the help of extensive quantum Monte-Carlo simulations we find that in the Bose-Hubbard model with only cavity-mediated global-range interactions no Haldane phase exists. For a combination of both interactions, the Haldane Insulator phase shrinks rapidly with increasing strength of the cavity-mediated global-range interactions. Thus, in spite of the otherwise very similar behavior the mean-field like cavity-mediated interactions strongly suppress the non-local order favored by nearest-neighbor repulsion in some regions of the phase diagram. Phase diagrams of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model with cavity-mediated long-range and nearest-neighbor interactions

Chao Zhang, Heiko Rieger

Abstract Recent experiments with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice have realized cavity-mediated long-range interaction and observed the emergence of a supersolid phase and a density wave phase in addition to Mott insulator and superfluid phases. Here we consider theoretically the effect of uncorrelated disorder on the phase diagram of this system and study the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with cavity-mediated long-range interactions and uncorrelated diagonal disorder. We also study the phase diagram of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interactions in the presence of uncorrelated diagonal disorder. The extended Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interactions has been realized in the experiment using dipolar interaction recently. With the help of quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the worm algorithm, we determine the phase diagram of those two models. We compare the phase diagrams of cavity-mediated long-range interactions with nearest-neighbor interactions. We show that two kinds of Bose glass phases exist: one with and one without density wave order. We also find that weak disorder enhances the supersolid phase. Graphical abstract

Phase diagrams of extended Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension by Monte-Carlo simulation with stochastic-series expansion

Keima Kawaki, Yoshihito Kuno, Ikuo Ichinose

In this paper, we study detailed phase diagrams of the extended Bose-Hubbard model (EBHM) in one dimension by means of the quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulation using the stochastic-series expansion (SSE). In the EBHM, there exists a nearest-neighbor repulsion as well as the on-site repulsion. In the SSE-QMC simulation, the highest particle number at each site, $n_c$, is also controllable parameter, and we found that the phase diagram depends on the value of $n_c$. It is shown that in addition to the Mott insulator, superfluid, density wave, the phase so-called Haldane insulator and supersolid appear in the phase diagrams, and their locations in the phase diagrams are clarified.

One-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interaction

Till D. Kühner, Steven R. White, H. Monien

We study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model using the density-matrix renormalization group. For the cases of on-site interactions and additional nearest-neighbor interactions the phase boundaries of the Mott insulators and charge-density wave phases are determined. We find a direct phase transition between the charge-density wave phase and the superfluid phase, and no supersolid or normal phases. In the presence of nearest-neighbor interaction the charge density wave phase is completely surrounded by a region in which the effective interactions in the superfluid phase are repulsive. In this region a single impurity causes the system to be insulating. An even bigger region of the superfluid phase is driven into a Bose-glass phase by any finite quenched disorder. We determine the boundaries of both regions in the phase diagram. The ac conductivity of the superfluid phase in the attractive and the repulsive region is calculated, and a big superfluid stiffness is found in the attractive as well as the repulsive region.

Competing insulating phases in a dimerized extended Bose-Hubbard model

Aoi Hayashi, Suman Mondal, Tapan Mishra +1 more

We study the ground-state properties of the extended Bose-Hubbard model in a one-dimensional dimerized optical lattice. In the limit of strong on-site repulsion, i.e., hardcore bosons, and strong nearest-neighbor interaction, a stable density-wave (DW) phase is obtained at half-filling as a function of lattice dimerization. Interestingly, at quarter-filling we obtain the signatures of an insulating phase which has the character of both the bond order (BO) and the DW insulators, which we call a bond-order density-wave (BODW) phase. Moreover, we show that for a fixed hopping dimerization there occurs a BO-DW phase crossover as a function of the nearest-neighbor interaction and the BODW phase is more robust when the hopping dimerization is stronger. We further examine the stability of the BODW phase in the limit of finite on-site interactions.
