Abstract

The classical synthesis method for quantum oracles generally requires a reversible logic synthesis and a quantum compilation step. In the reversible logic synthesis it is important to obtain a compact reversible circuit in order to minimize the quantum cost of the final quantum circuit. In this paper, we exploit function regularities for enabling efficient reversible syn-thesis. In particular, we propose and implement a new method for the quantum synthesis of Dimension reducible Boolean functions. The experimental results validate the proposed approach showing relevant gains in area.

Compact Quantum Circuits for Autosymmetric and Dimension Reducible Functions

Anna Bernasconi, Valentina Ciriani, Gianmarco Cuciniello +2 more

A quantum oracle is a reversible quantum subroutine that implements a classical Boolean function within a quantum algorithm. Classical synthesis methods for quantum oracles typically involve two steps: reversible logic synthesis and quantum compilation. In the reversible logic synthesis phase, producing a compact reversible circuit is crucial to minimizing the quantum cost of the final quantum circuit. In this paper, we investigate Boolean functions that simultaneously exhibit two distinct XOR-based regularities: autosymmetry and D-reducibility. These regularities can be effectively utilized for efficient reversible circuit synthesis of Boolean functions. In particular, we propose and implement a new method for the quantum synthesis of autosymmetric and D-reducible Boolean functions. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on the considered benchmarks, showing reductions in T-count and CNOT-count after Clifford+T quantum compilation.

Rotation-Based Design and Synthesis of Quantum Circuits

Mariam Zomorodi Moghadam, Keivan Navi

In this paper, a new synthesis method for Boolean irreversible functions has been proposed which is based on rotation quantum operators. The primary motivation is that the implementation of these operators is commonly available in quantum technologies. We introduce an approach for synthesizing Boolean irreversible functions in quantum logic which is based on quantum rotation and CNOT operators and uses a prespecified fixed design where by changing the rotation angles a new functionality can be achieved. So this design can be viewed as a programmable array of rotation gates. If reduction in quantum cost is desired, after this step the optimization approach may be applied to reduce the number of gates by using some rules, which leads to a reduction of up to 48% in the quantum cost after optimization compared to the original nonoptimized design obtained from the synthesis method. The paper also introduces efficient designs with rotation operators for some important gates in the quantum circuit libraries. Our main contribution is introducing a novel and low complexity approach for synthesizing irreversible functions using elementary rotation operators with a regular fixed design. Also having as many functions as desired with the same inputs, the execution time just increases by one for each additional function and the circuit width is increased by one for each additional function. It is proved that our approach can always be applied to each Boolean function. We show the correctness of our approach and make an upper bound of the quantum cost of the circuit.

Generalizing the Concept of Scalable Reversible Circuit Synthesis for Multiple-Valued Logic

Alwin Zulehner, P. Mercy Nesa Rani, Kamalika Datta +2 more

Research on reversible circuits has gained significance due to its application in quantum computations and many further areas such as the design of encoders. At the same time, the use of multiple-valued logic gained importance since this reduces the number of required entities in physical systems (e.g. in a future quantum computer). While most research is still conducted in the Boolean domain, there exist only few approaches which realize reversible circuits for multiple-valued logic. Moreover, most of the previously proposed solutions for synthesis of multiple-valued reversible circuits are not scalable and consider ternary (i.e. 3-valued circuits) only. Instead of overcoming these issues by developing new synthesis approaches for multiple-valued reversible circuits from scratch, we propose to utilize the recent accomplishments in the design of Boolean reversible circuits and to generalize them for multiple-valued logic. To this end, we discuss how to generalize Quantum Multiple-valued Decision Diagram based (QMDD-based) synthesis - a synthesis approach for Boolean reversible circuits which has been proven to be scalable and which has been used in several recently developed design flows. The discussions eventually show how to bridge the development gap between Boolean and multiple-valued logic for reversible circuits.

Automatic Generation of Grover Quantum Oracles for Arbitrary Data Structures

Raphael Seidel, Colin Kai‐Uwe Becker, Bock, Sebastian +3 more

The steadily growing research interest in quantum computing - together with the accompanying technological advances in the realization of quantum hardware - fuels the development of meaningful real-world applications, as well as implementations for well-known quantum algorithms. One of the most prominent examples till today is Grover's algorithm, which can be used for efficient search in unstructured databases. Quantum oracles that are frequently masked as black boxes play an important role in Grover's algorithm. Hence, the automatic generation of oracles is of paramount importance. Moreover, the automatic generation of the corresponding circuits for a Grover quantum oracle is deeply linked to the synthesis of reversible quantum logic, which - despite numerous advances in the field - still remains a challenge till today in terms of synthesizing efficient and scalable circuits for complex boolean functions. In this paper, we present a flexible method for automatically encoding unstructured databases into oracles, which can then be efficiently searched with Grover's algorithm. Furthermore, we develop a tailor-made method for quantum logic synthesis, which vastly improves circuit complexity over other current approaches. Finally, we present another logic synthesis method that considers the requirements of scaling onto real world backends. We compare our method with other approaches through evaluating the oracle generation for random databases and analyzing the resulting circuit complexities using various metrics.

Synthesis of quantum circuits based on incompletely specified functions and if-decision diagrams

Anatoly Alekseevich Prihozhy

The problem of synthesis and optimisation of logical reversible and quantum circuits from functional descriptions represented as decision diagrams is considered. It is one of the key problems being solved with the aim of creating quantum computing technology and quantum computers. A new method of stepwise transformation of the initial functional specification to a quantum circuit is proposed, which provides for the following project states: reduced ordered binary decision diagram, if-decision diagram, functional if-decision diagram, reversible circuit and quantum circuit. The novelty of the method consists in extending the Shannon and Davio expansions of a Boolean function on a single variable to the expansions of the same Boolean function on another function with obtaining decomposition products that are represented by incompletely defined Boolean functions. Uncertainty in the decomposition products gives remarkable opportunities for minimising the graph representation of the specified function. Instead of two outgoing branches of the binary diagram vertex, three outgoing branches of the if-diagram vertex are generated, which increase the level of parallelism in reversible and quantum circuits. For each transformation step, appropriate mapping rules are proposed that reduce the number of lines, gates and the depth of the reversible and quantum circuit. The comparison of new results with the results given by the known method of mapping the vertices of binary decision diagram into cascades of reversible and quantum gates shows a significant improvement in the quality of quantum circuits that are synthesised by the proposed method.
