Abstract

Chinese search engine company Baidu has donated its quantum computing research facility to the Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Sciences, following a similar move by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which donated its quantum lab to Zhejiang University last November.

Aliyun and Chinese Academy of Sciences Sign MoU for Quantum Computing Laboratory

APPN Editorial Team

Alibaba Group's cloud computing subsidiary, Aliyun, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) signed a memorandum of understanding on 31 July 2015 in Shanghai to co-found the Chinese Academy of Sciences – Alibaba Quantum Computing Laboratory. The aim of the new research facility is to advance the study and applications of quantum theory, thereby creating new technologies and platforms for information security, connectivity and computing.

Quantum Computing Breakthrough

George Rajna

A happy accident in the laboratory has led to a breakthrough discovery that not only solved a problem that stood for more than half a century, but has major implications for the development of quantum computers and sensors. [55] Significant technical and financial issues remain towards building a large, fault-tolerant quantum computer and one is unlikely to be built within the coming decade. [54] Chemists at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena (Germany) have now synthesised a molecule that can perform the function of a computing unit in a quantum computer. [53] The research team developed the first optical microchip to generate, manipulate and detect a particular state of light called squeezed vacuum, which is essential for HYPERLINK https://phys.org/tags/quantum/ quantum computation. [52] Australian scientists have investigated new directions to scale up qubits-utilising the spin-orbit coupling of atom qubits-adding a new suite of tools to the armory. [51] A team of international researchers led by engineers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have invented a new magnetic device to manipulate digital information 20 times more efficiently and with 10 times more stability than commercial spintronic digital memories. [50] Working in the lab of Mikhail Lukin, the George Vasmer Leverett Professor of Physics and co-director of the Quantum Science and Engineering Initiative, Evans is lead author of a study, described in the journal Science, that demonstrates a method for engineering an interaction between two qubits using photons. [49] Researchers with the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have demonstrated a new level of control over photons encoded with quantum information. [48] Researchers from Intel Corp. and the University of California, Berkeley, are looking beyond current transistor technology and preparing the way for a new type of memory and logic circuit that could someday be in every computer on the planet. Alibaba Cloud Quantum Development Platform: Applications to Quantum Algorithm Design

Cupjin Huang, Márió Szegedy, Fang Zhang +3 more

We report our work on the Alibaba Cloud Quantum Development Platform (AC-QDP). The capability of AC-QDP's computational engine was already reported in \cite{CZH+18, ZHN+19}.In this follow-up article, we demonstrate with figures how AC-QDP helps in testing large-scale quantum algorithms (currently within the QAOA framework). We give new benchmark results on regular graphs. AC-QDP's QAOA framework can simulate thousands of qubits for up to $4$ layers. Then we discuss two interesting use cases we have implemented on the platform: 1. Optimal QAOA sequences for small-cycle free graphs; 2. Graph structure discovery.

China at the nexus of AI and quantum computing

Jonathan Ray

The convergence between artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing has global economic and security implications, with applications ranging from advancing pharmaceuticals to breaking traditional encryption. In its national and local state plans, China's policymakers clearly seek global leadership in both of these domains, and encourage synergies between them. Traditional research institutions, namely universities and laboratories, are leading theoretical work and basic research and development for quantum computers to power AI applications, quantum machine learning (ML), and other foundational work. Additionally, China's premier cloud service providers are advancing the two technologies with quantum simulators and online platforms for ML and algorithm development. These companies are driving the commercialization of quantum technologies for industries like pharmaceuticals, materials science, and chemistry. China's investments and rapid advancements warrant analytic attention to avoid technological surprise and inform U.S. policymakers and leaders in these fields. To that end, this chapter identifies key entities pursuing research on the nexus between the two technologies, assesses technology paths and obstacles, and provides indicators for future analyses.
