Abstract

Coherent coupling between a ferromagnetic magnon and a superconducting qubit demonstrates a special fascination in the quantum information field. Here, we construct a hybrid system to realize tunable strong coupling between a transmon and a magnon. In a hybrid system, the transmon couples to a cavity while the magnon couples to the other cavity. Meanwhile, the two cavities are coupled via a hopping interaction. In addition, we demonstrate some applications of this system to quantum information. Specifically, a high-fidelity $i$swap${}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$ gate and a maximally entangled state between the transmon and the magnon with this coupling system can be realized even if the dissipation is considered. Moreover, by employing more cavities and magnons, the $W$-type entangled state can be created with multiple transmons. This hybrid system provides an alternative platform for scalable quantum information processing.

Magnon-mediated quantum gates for superconducting qubits

Martijn Dols, Sanchar Sharma, Lenos Bechara +3 more

We propose a hybrid quantum system consisting of a magnetic particle inductively coupled to two superconducting transmon qubits, where qubit-qubit interactions are mediated via magnons. We show that the system can be tuned into three different regimes of effective qubit-qubit interactions, namely, a transverse ($XX+YY$), a longitudinal ($ZZ$), and a nontrivial $ZX$ interaction. In addition, we show that an enhanced coupling can be achieved by employing an ellipsoidal magnet, carrying anisotropic magnetic fluctuations. We propose a scheme for realizing two-qubit gates, and simulate their performance under realistic experimental conditions. We find that iswap and cz gates can be performed in this setup with an average fidelity $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}99%$, while an icnot gate can be applied with an average fidelity $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}88%$. Our proposed hybrid circuit architecture offers an alternative platform for realizing two-qubit gates between superconducting qubits and could be employed for constructing qubit networks using magnons as mediators.

Coherent coupling between a ferromagnetic magnon and a superconducting qubit

Yutaka Tabuchi, Seiichiro Ishino, Atsushi Noguchi +4 more

Rigidity of an ordered phase in condensed matter results in collective excitation modes spatially extending to macroscopic dimensions. A magnon is a quantum of such collective excitation modes in ordered spin systems. Here, we demonstrate the coherent coupling between a single-magnon excitation in a millimeter-sized ferromagnetic sphere and a superconducting qubit, with the interaction mediated by the virtual photon excitation in a microwave cavity. We obtain the coupling strength far exceeding the damping rates, thus bringing the hybrid system into the strong coupling regime. Furthermore, we use a parametric drive to realize a tunable magnon-qubit coupling scheme. Our approach provides a versatile tool for quantum control and measurement of the magnon excitations and may lead to advances in quantum information processing.

Shortcut-based generation of transmon-magnon entangled states

Run‐Ying Yan, Zhi‐Bo Feng

Abstract Optimized generation of entangled states between solid-state qubits is of fundamental significance to quantum information science and technology. Here, we develop an effective scheme to fast and robustly create the entangled states in a hybrid system containing a superconducting transmon qubit and a spin magnon of yttrium iron garnet. The transmon qubit and the magnon system are coupled via a microwave cavity field. Within the framework of invariant-based shortcuts to adiabaticity, the transmon-magnon entangled states can be rapidly induced by engineering the Rabi couplings between the cavity mode and transmon (magnon) with constant amplitudes. Compared with a non-shortcut counterpart, the shortcut-based operations of interest not only considerably shorten the generation time, but also greatly mitigate the decoherence effects. Furthermore, the fast dynamics is well insensitive to the control deviation of Rabi couplings. Thus our approach could lead to advances in information processing and state engineering with composite systems.

Coherent coupling between ferromagnetic magnon and superconducting qubit

Yutaka Tabuchi, Seiichiro Ishino, Atsushi Noguchi +4 more

Rigidity of an ordered phase in condensed matter results in collective excitation modes spatially extending in macroscopic dimensions. Magnon is a quantum of an elementary excitation in the ordered spin system, such as ferromagnet. Being low dissipative, dynamics of magnons in ferromagnetic insulators has been extensively studied and widely applied for decades in the contexts of ferromagnetic resonance, and more recently of Bose-Einstein condensation as well as spintronics. Moreover, towards hybrid systems for quantum memories and transducers, coupling of magnons and microwave photons in a resonator have been investigated. However, quantum-state manipulation at the single-magnon level has remained elusive because of the lack of anharmonic element in the system. Here we demonstrate coherent coupling between a magnon excitation in a millimetre-sized ferromagnetic sphere and a superconducting qubit, where the interaction is mediated by the virtual photon excitation in a microwave cavity. We obtain the coupling strength far exceeding the damping rates, thus bringing the hybrid system into the strong coupling regime. Furthermore, we find a tunable magnon-qubit coupling scheme utilising a parametric drive with a microwave. Our approach provides a versatile tool for quantum control and measurement of the magnon excitations and thus opens a new discipline of quantum magnonics.

Long-range generation of a magnon-magnon entangled state

Ya-long Ren, Ji-kun Xie, Xinke Li +2 more

Generation of entanglement between spatially separated macroscopic systems enables quantum networks and fundamental tests of quantum theory. Here, we propose a scheme to generate a long-range entangled state between two macroscopic spheres. The hybrid system under consideration consists of two massive ferromagnetic spheres and a superconducting transmon qubit, which are both coupled to a microwave cavity array. When the qubit or magnon frequency lies outside of the frequency band of the cavity array, the qubit or magnon mode can seed a tunable, localized cavity mode with an exponentially decaying envelope around its position. This effective cavity mediates the long-range qubit-magnon and magnon-magnon interactions in a coherent way, enabling the long-distance magnon-magnon entanglement via the superconducting qubit.

Quantum Magnonics: Quantum States Generation and Applications

Zi-Xu Lu, Xuan Zuo, Xin-Lei Hei +5 more

Hybrid systems based on magnons in ferromagnetic materials, such as yttrium iron garnet, have achieved remarkable development in the last decade. These include the coupling of magnons to microwave and optical photons, superconducting qubits, phonons, spins, the center-of-mass motion of a ferromagnet, etc. Here, we review both the experimental and theoretical progress in this field, focusing on the generation of magnonic quantum states and their applications in a broad range of fields. Since the strong coupling is a prerequisite for achieving coherent quantum control of magnons and preparing magnonic quantum states, we start by introducing representative strong-coupling experiments in cavity magnonics, then review a series of protocols for creating various magnonic quantum states, such as Fock, cat, squeezed, and entangled states, and discuss their potential applications in macroscopic quantum studies, quantum information science, quantum sensing, magnonic quantum devices, dark matter detection, and so on. Finally, we summarize the review and give an outlook for the future study of quantum magnonics.
