One of the most common and well-known problems in combinatorial optimization is the minimum spanning tree. With the emergence of complex data structures, new, more complex, but asymptotically efficient algorithms have been proposed. In this research, we present a new evolutionary algorithm influenced by quantum mechanics, known as quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm (QIEA) to find the minimum spanning tree of a complete weighted undirected graph as input and computational results to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is named QIEA-MST and is based on concept and principle such as qubits and the superposition, coherence and the entanglement of different qubits of quantum state. The algorithm is simple and easy to understand and easy to implement. Some types of scientific and engineering problems will benefit from the proposed method.

Quantum-Inspired Evolutionary Algorithms (QIEAs) represent a novel fusion of quantum computing principles and classical evolutionary strategies, offering a powerful approach to solving complex optimization problems. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview, detailing foundational concepts, implementation techniques, and potential applications of QIEAs. By leveraging quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement, QIEAs enhance the exploitation and exploration capabilities of traditional evolutionary algorithms (EAs), thus enabling an efficient search of vast solution spaces. The study examines key components of QIEA, including quantum encoding, rotation gates, and entanglement operations, and compares its performance with classical EAs. By analyzing real-life examples of combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) such as the minimum spanning tree (MST), traveling salesman problem (TSP), and graph coloring, the chapter demonstrates QIEA’s superior efficiency and solution quality. Despite implementation challenges, QIEA shows promise in various domains, including machine learning, finance, healthcare, telecommunications, and e-commerce. Future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the need for simplified quantum-inspired operators, hybrid quantum-classical systems, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This chapter highlights the transformative potential of QIEA, setting the stage for further advancements and applications in optimization and computational efficiency.
This paper proposes a novel type of quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm (QiEA) for numerical optimization inspired by the multiple universes principle of quantum computing, which is based on the concept and principles of quantum computing, such as a quantum bit and superposition of states. Numerical optimization problems are an important field of research with several applications in several areas: industrial plant optimization, data mining and many others, and although being successfully used for solving several optimization problems, evolutionary algorithms still present issues that can reduce their performances when faced with task where the evaluation function is computationally intensive. In order to address those issues the QiEA represent the most recent advance in the field of evolutionary computation. This work present some application about combinatorial and numerical optimization problems.
Quantum annealing (QA) is a different technology from gate-model quantum computing. This research proposes a novel technique for solving the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) (or, the minimum weight spanning tree) problem on a quantum annealer. The problem is of interest due to its applications in clustering, unsupervised learning, network design, and image processing to name a few. The advent of quantum cloud computing has provided access to quantum computing tools, previously unavailable to the general community. D-Wave systems recently released cloud access to their quantum annealer type hardware, which this project leverages to provide a novel solution method to the MST problem.
A novel evolutionary algorithm based on quantum computing concepts is applied to engineering optimization problems. Quantum computing mimics behavior of atoms in processing information. Quantum inspired algorithm is a concept, which employs certain elements of quantum computing to use in a wider class of search and optimization problems. The main parts of a quantum-inspired algorithm are the qubits (quantum equivalent of bits) and the quantum gates. Qubits hold the information in a superposition of all the states, while the quantum gates evolve the qubit to achieve the desired objective, which is, in optimization the maximum or the minimum. The paper addresses the ability of the Quantum-Inspired Evolution Algorithm (QIEA) to solve practical engineering optimization problems. QIEA, which is developed by authors, is based on their previous work and it is extended to acquire the floating-point representation of the information. The RQIEA is tested on a four benchmark engineering optimization problems. The results showed that the new algorithm has the ability to compete and even overcome other well known methods.
Quantum-Inspired Algorithms (QIAs) combine principles of quantum computing with classical evolutionary strategies to address complex optimization problems. This research explores the potential of QIAs in improving optimization processes, particularly in combinatorial and multi-objective optimization scenarios. The study focuses on the application of Quantum-Inspired Genetic Algorithms (QIGAs) and Quantum-Inspired Evolutionary Algorithms (QIEAs), assessing their effectiveness in solving classical problems like the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) and Minimum Spanning Tree (MST). Through computational simulations, the research compares the time convergence and solution accuracy of QIAs against traditional classical algorithms. The findings demonstrate that QIAs achieve faster convergence rates and higher-quality solutions, with accuracy levels reaching 98-99% of the global optimal solutions, while significantly reducing computational time. These results underline the advantages of QIAs in solving large and complex optimization problems, making them a promising alternative to traditional algorithms. Additionally, QIAs excel in avoiding local minima, a common pitfall of classical methods, due to their ability to explore the solution space more efficiently through quantum principles like superposition and interference. The implications of this study suggest that QIAs can be a valuable tool for tackling real-world optimization challenges, with potential applications in fields such as finance, logistics, telecommunications, and energy management. The research also indicates the necessity for further improvements in quantum-inspired algorithms' scalability and hardware integration, particularly for larger, more intricate optimization problems, to fully realize their potential in practical industrial applications.
This paper presents a novel approach to complex optimization problems by integrating quantum-inspired concepts within an evolutionary algorithm framework. Traditional evolutionary algorithms, such as Genetic Algorithms and Differential Evolution, can struggle with high-dimensional and complex search spaces, often exhibiting slow convergence rates. We hypothesize that principles derived from quantum mechanics, specifically superposition and entanglement, can provide a more effective mechanism for exploring these spaces. Our proposed Quantum-Inspired Evolutionary Algorithm (QIEA) incorporates operators designed to mimic quantum interference and entanglement, allowing for a more nuanced and potentially faster exploration of the solution landscape. The core claim is that these quantum-inspired mechanisms can significantly enhance the efficiency of evolutionary optimization. The paper details the algorithm's design, including the implementation of interference and entanglement operators, and discusses its potential advantages and challenges. Experimental results (though not presented through dedicated experimental sections) demonstrate the algorithm's ability to outperform standard evolutionary algorithms on a range of benchmark problems.
