Active Suppression of the Light Shift in an Atomic Clock Based on Coherent Population Trapping in 87Rb Vapor Using the Phase Jump Technique

Daba A. Radnatarov, Sergey M Kobtsev, Valeriy Andryushkov +4 more

The active suppression of light shift of the reference coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance in 87Rb vapor to improve the long-term stability of compact atomic clocks has been demonstrated experimentally. The approach is based on the phase jump technique used to synthesize an error signal, which is proportional to the light shift of the CPT resonance, from an optical transmission signal. The use of this error signal in an additional feedback loop allows one to stabilize the amplitude of a microwave signal for the phase modulation of laser radiation near a value at which the light shift of the CPT resonance is absent. This technique has made it possible to reduce the long-term instability of CPT atomic clocks in our experiments by a factor of 15 at an integration time of 10 000–20 000 s.

Dynamic Continuous-Wave Spectroscopy of Coherent Population Trapping at Phase-Jump Modulation

M. Yu. Basalaev, V.I. Yudin, A.V. Taichenachev +5 more

A method of dynamic continuous-wave spectroscopy of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances using phase modulation of the jump type is developed. The time evolution of the spectroscopic signal is investigated. A method for the formation of an error signal for frequency stabilization is proposed. We show that our approach has a reduced sensitivity to the line-shape asymmetry of the CPT resonance. The experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on a mathematical model of a three-level $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system in a bichromatic field. This method can be used in atomic frequency standards (including chip-scale atomic clocks).

Active light shift stabilization in modulated CPT clocks.

Vishal Shah, Peter D. D. Schwindt, Vladislav P. Gerginov +3 more

We demonstrate a simple technique to significantly improve the long-term frequency stability in atomic clocks based on coherent population trapping (CPT). In this technique, a servo is used to control the local oscillator power level in such a way that the optical spectrum generates no net light shift. This ensures that the clock frequency is always given by the atomic resonance frequency that is not perturbed by the incident light fields.

Modulation-induced frequency shifts in a coherent-population-trapping-based atomic clock

We investigate systematic errors associated with a common modulation technique used for phase-sensitive detection of a coherent-population-trapping (CPT) resonance. In particular, we show that modification of the CPT resonance line shape due to the presence of off-resonant fields leads to frequency shifts that may limit the stability of CPT-based atomic clocks. We also demonstrate that an alternative demodulation technique greatly reduces these effects.
