Abstract

Abstract The coordination between distance and the secure key rate is one of the main challenges in the practical application of quantum key distribution (QKD). Mode‐pairing quantum key distribution is one of the schemes that can surpass the secret key capacity for repeaterless QKD. However, the protocol utilizes phase to encode the information, which leads to the problem of active stabilization in the interferometer. In this paper, a reference‐frame‐independent mode‐pairing quantum key distribution (RFI‐MP‐QKD) is proposed as an effective scheme to solve this problem. Moreover, the performance of the RFI‐MP‐QKD protocol is improved by applying the Advantage Distillation (AD) method in data post‐processing, which separates the highly correlated raw key bits from the weakly correlated information. The simulation results show that the secure key rate of RFI‐MP‐QKD has almost no degradation for reference frame deviation angles of . Compared to RFI‐MP‐QKD without AD method, the AD method decreases the quantum bit error rate from 0.04 to 0.012 and increases the maximum transmission distance from 406 to 450 km. The scheme proposed is expected to facilitate the practical implementation of RFI‐MP‐QKD, especially in cases of concerning reference frame alignment and high channel loss.

Advantage distillation (AD) provides a means of separating highly correlated raw key bits from weakly correlated information in quantum key distribution (QKD). In this Letter, we apply the AD method to improve the performance of reference-frame-independent QKD (RFI-QKD). Simulation results show that, compared with RFI-QKD without AD, RFI-QKD with AD can tolerate higher system errors and obtain better performance on the secret key rate and transmission distance. Furthermore, we extend the AD method to RFI measurement-device-independent QKD (RFI-MDI-QKD) and demonstrate that the AD method can improve the performance of RFI-MDI-QKD more significantly.

Asymmetric mode-pairing quantum key distribution with advantage distillation

Abstract Mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) is an excellent scheme that can exceed the repeaterless rate-transmittance bound without complex phase locking. Nevertheless, MP-QKD usually needs to ensure that the communication distances of the two channels are equal. To address the problem, the asymmetric MP-QKD protocol is proposed. In this paper, we enhance the performance of the asymmetric MP-QKD protocol based on the advantage distillation (AD) method without modifying the quantum process. The simulation results show that the AD method can extend the communication distance by about 70 km in the case of asymmetry. And we observe that as the misalignment error increases, the AD method further increases the expandable communication distance. Our work can further enhance the robustness and promote the practical application of the asymmetric MP-QKD.

Improving the performance of reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution with advantage distillation technology

The reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) has the advantage of tolerating reference frames that slowly vary. It can generate secure keys between two remote users with slowly drifted and unknown reference frames. However, the drift of reference frames may inevitably compromise the performance of QKD systems. In the paper, we employ the advantage distillation technology (ADT) to the RFI-QKD and the RFI measurement-device-independent QKD (RFI MDI-QKD), and we then analyze the effect of ADT on the performance of decoy-state RFI-QKD and RFI MDI-QKD in both asymptotic and nonasymptotic cases. The simulation results show that ADT can significantly improve the maximum transmission distance and the maximum tolerable background error rate. Furthermore, the performance of RFI-QKD and RFI MDI-QKD in terms of the secret key rate and maximum transmission distance are still greatly improved when statistical fluctuations are taken into account. Our work combines the merits of the ADT and RFI-QKD protocols, which further enhances the robustness and practicability of QKD systems.

Reference frame independent twin field quantum key distribution with source flaws

Comfort Sekga, Mhlambululi Mafu

Abstract The trade-off between distance and secret key generation rate remains one of the major challenges in the practical implementation of quantum key distribution (QKD). As a solution, a twin field QKD protocol was proposed by Lucamarini et al (2018) to address this challenge. In this protocol, the achievable secret key rate scales with the square root of channel transmittance and can surpass the secret key capacity for repeaterless QKD. However, the protocol exploits phase to encode information which presents the problem of active stabilization of interferometers. We propose a reference frame independent twin field quantum key distribution (RFITF QKD), which does not require the reference frames’ alignment. Thus, this reduces the complexity of practical QKD systems in achieving active stabilization of phase. Moreover, we employ the loss-tolerant method proposed by Tamaki et al (2014) which allows us to prove the security of the protocol by considering imperfections in the state preparation. Our simulation results show that our proposed protocol can extract a secure key over a transmission distance of l = 505 km, l = 516 km and l = 530 km for deviation of 8.42°, 7.28° and 5.15°, respectively from the desired phase encoding angle. These results demonstrate that despite the state preparation flaws, the key rates achieved are still comparable to the perfect encoding scenario. When our proposed protocol is implemented with an imperfect source, it achieves a transmission distance beyond the secret key capacity bound for repeaterless QKD.

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution with multi-step advantage distillation

Abstract The advantage distillation (AD) technology has been proven to effectively improve the secret key rate and the communication distance of quantum key distribution (QKD). The mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) protocol can overcome a fundamental physical limit, known as the Pirandola–Laurenza–Ottaviani–Banchi bound, without requiring global phase-locking. In this work, we propose a method based on multi-step AD to further enhance the performance of MP-QKD. The simulation results show that, compared to one-step AD, multi-step AD achieves better performance in long-distance scenarios and can tolerate a higher quantum bit error rate. Specifically, when the difference between the communication distances from Alice and Bob to Charlie is 25 km, 50 km and 75 km, and the corresponding transmission distance exceeds 523 km, 512 km and 496 km, respectively, the secret key rate achieved by multi-step AD surpasses that of one-step AD. Our findings indicate that the proposed method can effectively promote the application of MP-QKD in scenarios with high loss and high error rate.

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) is an easy-to-implement scheme that transcends the Pirandola-Laurenza-Ottaviani-Banchi bound without using quantum repeaters. In this paper, we present an improvement of the performance of MP-QKD using an advantage distillation method. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme extends the transmission distance significantly with a channel loss exceeding 7.6 dB. Moreover, the scheme tolerates a maximum quantum bit error rate of 8.9%, which is nearly twice that of the original MP-QKD. In particular, as the system misalignment error increases, the expandable distance of the proposed scheme also increases. The proposed system is expected to promote the practical implementation of MP-QKD in a wide range of applications, particularly in scenarios involving high channel losses and system errors.
