Abstract

crystal based on the revival of silenced echo protocol, which has the advantage of being immune from the spontaneous emission noise. We optimized the echo retrieval efficiency of the light pulse by employing complex hyperbolic secant rephasing pulses and by finely tuning the optical depth in the inhomogeneous broadening of the crystal. An echo retrieval efficiency of 24.4% was demonstrated, and an optical coherence time of 34.6 μs was extracted from the measured decay dynamics of the echo retrieval efficiency at a cryogenic temperature of 3.4 K. These results could be useful for potential applications in quantum memory and related applications.

Experimental study of a quantum memory protocol: revival of silenced echo and the superradiance

Mansur M. Minnegaliev, K. I. Gerasimov, Sergey A. Moiseev

An optical quantum memory protocol was implemented in the revival of silenced echo scheme in the 167Er3+:Y2SiO5 crystal at the telecommunication wavelength. The signal pulse recovery efficiency was 13% for a storage time of 60 μs for the optimal intensity of rephasing laser pulses. With a further increase in the laser pulse intensity, a superradiance pulse appears, causing a decrease in the signal pulse recovery efficiency. Methods for increasing the quantum memory efficiency by further increasing the pulse area of rephasing pulses are discussed.

Implementation of an Optical Quantum Memory Protocol in the 167Er3+:Y2SiO5 Crystal

Mansur M. Minnegaliev, K. I. Gerasimov, Т.Н. Сабиров +2 more

A quantum memory protocol has been implemented on the basis of the revival of silenced echo (ROSE) in the 167Er3+:Y2SiO5 crystal at the telecommunication wavelength for input light fields with a small number of photons. An efficiency of storage of 44% has been reached at a storage time of 40 μs. The input pulse contains ~340 photons on average, the reconstructed echo signal includes ~150 photons, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 4. It has been shown that the main source of noise is the spontaneous emission of atoms remaining in the excited state because the parameters of two rephasing pulses are imperfect. Methods of increasing the signal-to-noise ratio for the implementation of the efficient quantum memory for single-photon fields have been discussed.

Quantum memory in an orthogonal geometry of silenced echo retrieval

K. I. Gerasimov, Mansur M. Minnegaliev, S. A. Moiseev +3 more

We experimentally realize a quantum-memory protocol based on retrieval of silenced echo (ROSE) in Tm 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystal in an orthogonal geometry of the signal and control light fields. The silenced echo signal revival efficiency of ~13% with 36 μs storage time is demonstrated. To achieve that we implemented a high-precision atomic coherence control via amplitude- and phase-modulated laser pulses. We also discuss capabilities of this configuration, ways to increase quantum efficiency and to combine it with a single-mode optical cavity.

Storage and Recall of Weak Coherent Optical Pulses with an Efficiency of 25%

Mahmood Sabooni, F. Beaudoin, Andreas Walther +4 more

We demonstrate experimentally an efficient coherent rephasing scheme for the storage and recall of weak coherent light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in a Pr(3+):YSO crystal at 2.1 K. Precise optical pumping using a frequency stable (≈1 kHz linewidth) laser is employed to create a highly controllable atomic frequency comb structure. We report single photon level storage and retrieval efficiencies of 25%, based on coherent photon-echo-type reemission in the forward direction. The high efficiency is mainly a product of our highly controllable and precise ensemble-shaping technique. The coherence property of the quantum memory is proved through interference between a super-Gaussian pulse and the emitted echo.

Quantum memory in the revival of silenced echo scheme in an optical resonator

Mansur M. Minnegaliev, K. I. Gerasimov, R. V. Urmancheev +1 more

The protocol of optical quantum memory in the revival of silenced photon echo (ROSE) scheme is experimentally implemented in a Tm 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 crystal ( c = 0.1 at.%) placed in an impedance-matched optical Fabry–Perot resonator. The input signal recovery efficiency of ∼21 % is achieved for a light pulse with a storage time of 36 μs. The main sources of loss and their impact on the achieved quantum efficiency are discussed, as well as the advantages of the implemented scheme and the possibilities of the further improvement of the main parameters of quantum memory.
