Abstract

It has been shown that quantum technology, more specifically quantum computing, is a recent development that can perform calculations very quickly compared to the currently available traditional systems, which are slow in comparison to quantum computers and need to be replaced. This makes it very useful in the fields of research and development because it can perform calculations very quickly, and it also aids in the prediction of natural calamities like drought, tsunami, etc. Despite having many advantages, this technology cannot fully replace the ones that are now in use because of several flaws or shortcomings, such as use complexity, the difficulty of manufacturing systems with quantum computing, lost coherence, and environmental factors. For the technology to be used by regular people, it has to be modernized to reduce engineering complexity.

Quantum Computing

Michael Nofer, Kevin Bauer, Oliver Fast Hinz +2 more

There are signs that we are approaching a technical revolution that might take humankind’s computational capabilities to a new level. Quantum Computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics, enabling the computational power to solve specific problems currently intractable for classical computers (e.g., cracking cryptographic keys). Since we are getting to a point where we can no longer build smaller, more powerful, more efficient devices with conventional methodologies, we need to think of new ways for technological progress. The manufacturing of microchips is reaching its limits in the use of traditional architectures. Hence, new and more advanced technologies need to address the challenges of increasing energy consumption and data processing. Connectivity, scalable architectures and concepts like Cloud Computing and Software-as-a-Service have already helped to scale computational-intense applications in the last years and have attracted the interest of IS researchers (e.g., Benlian et al. 2009 ; Benlian et al. 2018 ; Messerschmidt and Hinz 2013 ). Looking ahead to the next generation, computing will comprise technologies that enable high-performance applications far beyond today’s possibilities. One prominent example with a disruptive potential is Quantum Computing. While there are abundant open questions and directions for further developments, researchers in this area have made substantial progress in the last decade, indicating that, after medical imaging, lasers, and superconductors, another quantum-technological innovation might be approaching. We, therefore, intend to provide an overview of the current state of Quantum Computing research and outline how this new technology might stimulate research in Information Systems.

The quest for a practical quantum advantage or the importance of applications for quantum computing

Jeanette Miriam Lorenz

Quantum computing as emerging technology raises high expectations to accelerate complicated calculations, superseding capabilities of presently available supercomputers and to provide a solution to the ever-increasing challenge of processing big amount of data. Besides theoretical promises, quantum computers have successfully been realized in experimental settings during the past few years, and can now also be accessed commercially. Given this availability of quantum computers, their application potential can be scrutinized. Promised to lead to disruptive changes in addressing and solving problems from the domains of simulation, optimization and machine learning, quantum computers have been researched in context of many application scenarios in industrial and academic setting in the recent years. However, it turns out that currently available quantum computers are still to small in size and limited in quality to fulfill the high hopes set in them at the moment. This review reflects on the current state of the technology coming from the perspective of the application, and indicates the developments required on hardware, software and algorithmic side to eventually make quantum computing beneficial for applications.

QUANTUM COMPUTING AND AI

Chintalapudi Rakesh, SHAIK SASI BHARATHA MUSHAHID, Bollu Jyothii

There is a major promise of extensive technical disturbance made by increasing convergence of two rapid development areas: Quantum Computing & Artificial Intelligence (AI). Unlike traditional computers, quantum computer use quantum -mechanical concepts as complication & superposition towards process data in a new way. Because of this, quantum computer machines can improve traditional systems towards solve certain types of problems. Machine learning (ML) algorithm is a sub -region of artificial intelligence aimed at automatically analyzing, interpreting & predicting procedures on a dataset. It is expected that the merger of AI & quantum calculation can quickly increase the processor power available for machine learning, which will accelerate processes such as data analysis, mimic quantum systems & handle complex customization problems. Medication development, material research & encryption abide some of the areas that benefit from the correction of quantum calculation of AI. among Quantum-Enhanced AI, the training machine learning models can endure very quick & more effective, so we can take problems that were impossible in the past. Pattern recognition, classification & decision -making artificial intelligence abide corners of applications; Quanta algorithms can also provide better ways for these features. Nevertheless, there abide still obstacles towards removing, such as creating special quantum algorithms for AI functions, ensuring that quantum systems can fix incorrectly, & make quantum machine scalable. Despite these challenges, the combination of AI & quantum calculation has the opportunity towards enter a new era of technical progress, which has not been able towards solve traditional data processing by answering major, complex problems so far.

Understanding the Use of Agile Development Practices Alongside Quantum Computing in Modern Engineering Projects

Prabu Manoharan

The understanding of the Agile development practices and quantum computer are becoming more and more a requirement as the engineering projects of the day are growing extremely complicated and dynamic. Agile methods that are familiar to facilitate an iterative cycle, cooperate and adaptability are inherently appropriate to the experimental and unpredictable world of quantum software development. Quantum computing (QC) that is grounded on the principles of superposition and entanglement is the origin of novel computational paradigms that require new programming and continuous fine-tuning. In addition to satisfying this need for brief development cycles and quick feedback loops, other Agile methods like Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming (XP) also demand rigorous planning. On the other hand, quantum software engineering is faced with specific issues such as the unskilled personnel, testing issues, and hardware limitations. In that case, the Agile methodologies are salvaged and assist in the breaking down of complex and quantum tasks into manageable units and result in a continuous improvement. All in all, standardization of Agile practices and quantum computing does not just assist in the innovation, but also in reduction of the risk of development and speeding up the development of the practical quantum solutions to the current engineering projects.
