Abstract

The second edition of Quantum Optics for Engineers: Quantum Entanglement is an updated and extended version of its first edition. New features include a transparent interferometric derivation of the physics for quantum entanglement devoid of mysteries and paradoxes. It also provides a utilitarian matrix version of quantum entanglement apt for engineering applications. Features: Introduces quantum entanglement via the Dirac–Feynman interferometric principle, free of paradoxes. Provides a practical matrix version of quantum entanglement which is highly utilitarian and useful for engineers. Focuses on the physics relevant to quantum entanglement and is coherently and consistently presented via Dirac’s notation. Illustrates the interferometric quantum origin of fundamental optical principles such as diffraction, refraction, and reflection. Emphasizes mathematical transparency and extends on a pragmatic interpretation of quantum mechanics. This book is written for advanced physics and engineering students, practicing engineers, and scientists seeking a workable-practical introduction to quantum optics and quantum entanglement.

Fundamentals of Quantum Entanglement (Second Edition)

F.J. Duarte

Quantum entanglement (QE) has rapidly become a subject of great interest in academia, industry, and government research institutions. This book builds on the first edition of Fundamentals of Quantum Entanglement to provide a transparent and more insightful introduction for graduate students, scientists, and engineers. It is also a highly useful education tool for those practitioners that were not aware of the physical origin of quantum entanglement: the Dirac—Wheeler—Pryce—Ward physics. The new edition includes an expansion on topics such as quantum entropy and quantum time. The book provides a direct, practical, and transparent introduction to the principles and physics of quantum entanglement. It does so whilst utilizing an interferometric approach based on Dirac—Feynman superposition probability amplitudes. Part of IOP Series in Coherent Sources, Quantum Fundamentals, and Applications. Key features • Provides an overview of quantum entanglement at a basic level • Explains the philosophical origin of quantum entanglement as well as the physical origin • Presents the key equation for the probability amplitude for QE from three perspectives while emphasizing its interferometric derivation • Includes applications on Quantum Cryptography, Quantum Teleportation, Quantum Computing • Reviews the current technology of QE with an emphasis in space-to-space communications

Quantum Entanglement Engineering and Applications

F.J. Duarte, T S Taylor

Quantum entanglement (QE) is one of the most, if not the most, mysterious, and yet most promising subjects of current physics. With applications in cryptographic space-to-space, space-to-earth, and fiber communications, in addition to teleportation and quantum computing, QE goes beyond fascination and into the pragmatic spheres of commerce and the military. With the growing population of engineers in need of a transparent, pragmatic, and direct introduction to QE and its applications, this book, the first of its kind, focuses on the practical mathematical tools necessary to handle QE and its requirements to design optical configurations for QE-based systems. Specific applications include satellite networks, space-to-space communications, quantum teleportation, and quantum computing. Part of IOP Series in Coherent Sources, Quantum Fundamentals, and Applications. Key features • The first and only available text on engineering for quantum entanglement. • Presents an introduction to the topic and explains the very basic physics concepts. • Provides a tour of the relevant mathematics essential to handle quantum entanglement. • Provides content to design optical configurations for optical entanglement-based systems in quantum communications and quantum computing. • Includes discussions of key practical applications such as space-to-space, fiber and satellite communications. • Presents the fascinating subject of quantum interpretations as elucidated by quantum entanglement. Introduction

Christopher C. Gerry, P. L. Knight

This established textbook provides an accessible but comprehensive introduction to the quantum nature of light and its interaction with matter. The field of quantum optics is covered with clarity and depth, from the underlying theoretical framework of field quantization, atom–field interactions, and quantum coherence theory, to important and modern applications at the forefront of current research such as quantum interferometry, squeezed light, quantum entanglement, cavity quantum electrodynamics, laser-cooled trapped ions, and quantum information processing. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and would be an ideal main text for a course on quantum optics. This long-awaited second edition builds upon the success of the first edition, including many new developments in the field, particularly in the area of quantum state engineering. Additional homework problems have been added, and content from the first edition has been updated and clarified throughout.

Quantum optics and lasers

Ariel Lipson, S. G. Lipson, H. Lipson

This fourth edition of a well-established textbook takes students from fundamental ideas to the most modern developments in optics. Illustrated with 400 figures, it contains numerous practical examples, many from student laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations. Aimed at undergraduate and advanced courses on modern optics, it is ideal for scientists and engineers. The book covers the principles of geometrical and physical optics, leading into quantum optics, using mainly Fourier transforms and linear algebra. Chapters are supplemented with advanced topics and up-to-date applications, exposing readers to key research themes, including negative refractive index, surface plasmon resonance, phase retrieval in crystal diffraction and the Hubble telescope, photonic crystals, super-resolved imaging in biology, electromagnetically induced transparency, slow light and superluminal propagation, entangled photons and solar energy collectors. Solutions to the problems, simulation programs, key figures and further discussions of several topics are available at www.cambridge.org/lipson.
