Towards quantum-enabled cell-centric therapeutics

Saugata Basu, Jannis Born, Aritra Bose +30 more

In recent years, there has been tremendous progress in the development of quantum computing hardware, algorithms and services leading to the expectation that in the near future quantum computers will be capable of performing simulations for natural science applications, operations research, and machine learning at scales mostly inaccessible to classical computers. Whereas the impact of quantum computing has already started to be recognized in fields such as cryptanalysis, natural science simulations, and optimization among others, very little is known about the full potential of quantum computing simulations and machine learning in the realm of healthcare and life science (HCLS). Herein, we discuss the transformational changes we expect from the use of quantum computation for HCLS research, more specifically in the field of cell-centric therapeutics. Moreover, we identify and elaborate open problems in cell engineering, tissue modeling, perturbation modeling, and bio-topology while discussing candidate quantum algorithms for research on these topics and their potential advantages over classical computational approaches.

Quantum Mini-Apps for Engineering Applications: A Case Study

In this work, we present a case study in implementing a variational quantum algorithm for solving the Poisson equation, which is a commonly encountered partial differential equation in science and engineering. We highlight the practical challenges encountered in mapping the algorithm to physical hardware, and the software engineering considerations needed to achieve realistic results on today's non-fault-tolerant systems.

Quantum Software Engineering: A New Genre of Computing

Muhammad Azeem Akbar, Arif Ali Khan, Sajjad Mahmood +1 more

The quantum computing (QC) field is rapidly moving beyond the realm of pure science to become a commercially viable technology that may be able to overcome the drawbacks of traditional computing. Major technology tycoons have spent in building coding frameworks and hardware to create applications specifically designed for quantum computing over the last few years. The development of QC hardware is accelerating, however, the requirement for software-intensive methodology, approaches, procedures, instruments, roles and responsibilities for creating industrial-focused quantum software applications arises from operationalizing the QC. This paper outlines the concept of quantum software engineering (QSE) life cycle, which entails the engineering of quantum requirements, design, implementation, testing and maintenance of quantum software. This paper notably advocates for collaborative efforts between the industrial community and software engineering research to propose practical solutions to support the complete activities for the development of quantum software. The proposed vision makes it easier for researchers and practitioners to suggest new procedures, reference designs, cutting-edge equipment, and methods for utilizing quantum computers and creating the newest and most advanced quantum software.
