Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) and relative phase on the propagation of a probe laser pulse in the presence of an incoherent pump field. It was discovered that when the control laser field is turned on, the medium forms an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. Hence, the propagation of the probe laser pulse has a like-soliton form/shape. On the contrary, the probe laser field is rapidly attenuated when the control laser field is turned off. This feature allows the creation of a mechanism to turn “off” and “on” the probe laser field through “turning off” and “on” the control laser field, i.e., an all-optical switching mechanism based on EIT. Besides intensity and frequency, the laser field is also characterized by polarization and phase. The EIT has the nature of quantum interference, so it is very sensitive to changes in polarization, especially in the presence of relative phase between laser fields. Therefore, they also significantly affect pulse propagation and optical switching performance. The research results could be helpful for experimental observations or applications in photonic devices such as logic gates, quantum optical information processors, and quantum computers.

Dynamical propagation and all-optical switching in a ladder-type three-level system under the influence of spontaneously generated coherence

Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Hoang Thi Huong +3 more

We investigate the dynamical of pulse propagation and all-optical switching via a spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) in a three-level ladder-type atomic medium driven by a coupling field under the presence of incoherent pumping. Results show that the SGC causes modulations at the leading edge of the pulse envelope shape. These modulations increase with the together growth of SGC and distance. Furthermore, it is shown that the continuous-wave input probe field is switched ON or OFF by periodically modulating the coupling field. The spontaneously generated coherence has a strong effect on switching efficiency and switching pulse shape. The proposed scheme may have applications in the design of optical switching and optical gain devices in optical telecommunications.

The incoherent pump rate: an optical tool for controlling the probe response and dispersion in a three-level Λ system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence

Sulagna Dutta

The probe response and dispersion of a three-level closed ? system considering spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) have been investigated with and without an incoherent pumping. One can get electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) whatever be the value of the SGC parameter and phase difference when an incoherent pump is absent. But by turning the incoherent pump rate on, one can control the light propagation from subluminal to superluminal and also the nonlinear response from EIT to electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) by controlling the SGC parameter and phase difference. Using the incoherent pump rate as an optical tool, the desired configuration around the resonance can be realized. Exact analytical expressions for the coherences in the steady-state limit have been derived in the absence of an incoherent pump rate (keeping all orders of the system parameters) to generalize the analysis, and any restriction on the system parameters has been avoided to make it applicable to various atomic and molecular systems.

Control of probe response and dispersion in a three level closed Λ system: Interplay between spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence

Sulagna Dutta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

The dispersion and the absorption properties of a closed three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping have been studied when both dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) play a significant role. We analyze the interplay between the dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on the absorption spectrum to induce different nonlinear processes like amplification without population inversion (AWI), electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). By changing the probe field Rabi frequency the response of the system can switch over from one nonlinear process to other and hence the probe field Rabi frequency can be used as a knob for switching different nonlinear responses. By changing the relative phase of two fields the response of the system switches over from EIA to EIT or EIT to AWI which can be used as optical switch. Choosing appropriate value of the relative phase and the probe field Rabi frequency, the dispersion and hence the propagation of the probe pulse can be controlled efficiently. Therefore these parameters can be used as a knob to manipulate light propagation from subluminal to superluminal. Exact analytical expressions for the coherences and populations in the steady state limit have been derived (keeping all orders of system parameters) to generalize the analysis. Any restrictions over the system parameters have been avoided to make it applicable to various atomic and molecular systems.

Combined effect of spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence in a three-level closed Λ system

Sulagna Dutta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

In a three-level closed Λ system with incoherent pumping, both the dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) play a significant role in inducing different nonlinear processes like amplification without population inversion (AWI), electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). These two coherences can interfere destructively and constructively giving rise to different nonlinear processes (EIT, EIA, AWI) when the strength of these two coherences is comparable. Therefore the system can switch over from one nonlinear process to the other and the desired response of the system can be achieved by controlling the system parameters. It has been shown that this switching can occur by changing the relative strength of Rabi frequencies for the coherent and probe fields and the mode of incoherent pumping (unidirectional and bidirectional) for a chosen SGC parameter. Further control over the response can be achieved by changing the phase between two radiation fields. But the dependence on phase is different when both the coherences contribute than that obtained only from SGC. Exact analytical expressions for the coherences and populations in the steady state limit have been derived (keeping all orders of system parameters) to generalize the analysis and any restrictions over the system parameters (e.g. spontaneous decay widths on probe and coherent transitions are equal) have been avoided to make it applicable to various atomic and molecular systems. However the approximate expressions can be derived from these exact values. Numerical values obtained by solving the density matrix equations agreed well with these exact analytical values.

Spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) in a three-level V-type multiple quantum well nanostructures

Rohit Hazra, Rohit Mukherjee, Nitu Borgohain

Coherent phenomena based on lasing without inversion (LWI), electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and enhanced index of refraction are due to the interaction of light with matter. Quite recently, the coherent phenomenon of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) has emerged as a significant one in the study of several semiconductor nanostructures. In this article, we examine the linear optical properties in the EIT regime for a three-level V-type semiconductor quantum wells (QWs) in the presence of an incoherent pump field under the SGC effect. It is shown that for a suitable choice of a SGC parameter and an incoherent pump field, the linear absorption substantially changes into a probe field gain and at the same time modifies the dispersive properties of the medium.

Phase-Controlled Transparent Superluminal Light Propagation in a Doppler-Broadened Four-Level N-Type System

Lida Ebrahimi Zohravi, Majid Abedi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

The propagation of a weak probe field in a four-level N-type quantum system in the presence of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is theoretically investigated. The optical properties of the system are studied and it is shown that the group velocity of light pulse can be controlled by relative phase of applied fields. By changing the relative phase of applied fields, the group velocity of light pulse changes from transparent subluminal to the transparent superluminal light propagation. Thus, the phase-controlled absorption-free superluminal light propagation is obtained without applying an incoherent laser fields to the system. The propagation of a weak probe light pulse is studied by solving the Maxwell's wave equation on numerical grid in space and time. Moreover, we study the third order self- and cross-Kerr susceptibility of probe field and calculate the nonlinear cross-phase shift for different values of intensity of applied fields. In addition, we take into account the effect of Doppler broadening on the light pulse propagation and it is found that a suitable choice of laser propagation directions allows us to preserve our results even in the presence of Doppler effect. It is demonstrated that by increasing the Doppler width of distribution to the room temperature, the dispersion changes from transparent subluminal to transparent superluminal light propagation which is our major motivation for this work.
