Minimum reflection channel in amplifying random media

Seng Fatt Liew, Hui W. Cao

Enhancing light transmission through scattering media is of much interest in many fields. Here, numerical simulations are performed to study the impact of gain on the value of reflection of the minimum reflection channel in a random medium. Surprisingly, in some random configurations, the reflection falls when gain is added even through the intensity inside the medium presumably increases once gain is introduced. This unexpected behavior is explained based on a decomposition of quasinormal modes.

One-photon communication in atomic media

Zixiang Hong, John C. Schotland

We consider the problem of single-photon transmission through an atomic medium, using quantum channel fidelity to describe the resulting information loss. We find that the normalized fidelity decreases monotonically with coupling strength, establishing a performance bound for quantum communication through such media. Our results hold for several channel types and for deterministic and random media.

Coherent Control of Total Transmission of Light through Disordered Media

Sébastien M. Popoff, Arthur Goetschy, S. F. Liew +2 more

We demonstrate order of magnitude coherent control of total transmission of light through random media by shaping the wave front of the input light. To understand how the finite illumination area on a wide slab affects the maximum values of total transmission, we develop a model based on random matrix theory that reveals the role of long-range correlations. Its predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and provide physical insight into the experimental results.
