Uhlmann phases in the Kitaev chain with NNN hopping interaction

Abstract

Abstract We study the extended Kitaev chain with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms and find the model system exhibiting nontrivial phases, which can be characterized by a nonzero Berry phase and winding number when the system is in a pure state. While in a mixed state, we investigate the robustness of the topological Uhlmann phases and show how it responses to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms. Furthermore, we analyse the complicated behavior of the Uhlmann phase of the extended Kitaev chain at finite temperature as k moves along the Brillouin zone, and we think this may serve as a topological indicator for mixed states in condensed matter systems.

Distribution of Majorana modes in the extended-range Kitaev chain

Pedro Barbisan Widniczck, Gerardo Martinez

The topological properties of the Kitaev chain model with extended-range interactions are investigated, focusing on cases where the topological winding number is preserved. We assume that the pairing and hopping terms decay algebraically in space with exponents $α$ and $β$, respectively. We show that in the truncated-range scenario, there are as many distinct topological phases as the number of coupled neighboring sites. In addition, an explicit analytical formulation is provided to evaluate the topological invariant and the phase transitions that emerge in these systems. Besides the analytical description, we introduce a new physical insight into the topological excitations of the ground-state by measuring the spatial distribution of the edge modes with the Majorana average position. Taking the next-nearest neighbor Kitaev chains as a probe, various numerical calculations of Majorana edge states were performed in finite-size clusters to determine the sensitivity of the topological zero energy modes to the parameters of interest. The occupation of edge-to-edge non-local fermion states is computed and defined as an effective parity. Such an effective parity exhibits new interesting features beyond the energetic exchange from the ground-state fermion parity switches, which are related to the distribution of the respective edge modes. Our calculations show a direct correlation between the ground-state fermion parity and the edge occupation numbers, which are translated into localization and delocalization of the Majorana average position.

A Spin $1/2$ Fermions Chain with $XY$ Interaction

Gianluca Francica

We consider a chain of spinful fermions with nearest neighbor hopping in the presence of a $XY$ antiferromagnetic interaction. The $XY$ term is mapped onto a Kitaev chain at half-filling such that displays a bosonic zero mode topologically protected and long-range order. As the strength of the hopping amplitude is changed, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from the topological non-trivial to the trivial phase. We apply the finite-size scaling method to determinate the phase diagram of the model.

Topological footprints of the Kitaev chain with long-range superconducting pairings at a finite temperature

Utso Bhattacharya, Amit Dutta

We study the one-dimensional Kitaev chain with long-range superconductive pairing terms at a finite temperature where the system is prepared in a mixed state in equilibrium with a heat reservoir maintained at a constant temperature $T$. In order to probe the footprint of the ground-state topological behavior of the model at finite temperature, we look at two global quantities extracted out of two geometrical constructions: the Uhlmann and the interferometric phase. Interestingly, when the long-range effect dominates, the Uhlmann phase approach fails to reproduce the topological aspects of the model in the pure-state limit; on the other hand, the interferometric phase which has a proper pure state reduction, shows a behavior independent of the ambient temperature.

Thermal Uhlmann-Chern number from the Uhlmann connection for extracting topological properties of mixed states

Yan He, Hao Guo, Chih-Chun Chien

The Berry phase is a geometric phase of a pure state when the system is adiabatically transported along a loop in its parameter space. The concept of geometric phase has been generalized to mixed states by the so-called Uhlmann phase. However, the Uhlmann phase is constructed from the Uhlmann connection that possesses a well-defined global section. This property implies that the Uhlmann connection is topologically trivial and, as a consequence, the corresponding Chern character vanishes. We propose a modified Chern character whose integral gives the thermal Uhlmann Chern number, which is related to the winding number of the mapping defined by the Hamiltonian. Therefore, the thermal Uhlmann Chern number reflects the topological properties of the underlying Hamiltonian of a mixed state. By including the temperature dependence in the volume integral, we also introduce the nontopological thermal Uhlmann Chern number, which varies with temperature but is not quantized at finite temperatures. We illustrate the applications to a two-band model and a degenerate four-band model.

Topological quantum phase transitions and criticality in a longer-range Kitaev chain

Y R Kartik, Ranjith Kumar R, S Rahul +2 more

In an attempt to theoretically investigate the quantum phase transition and criticality in topological models, we study a Kitaev chain with longer-range couplings (finite number of neighbors) as well as truly long-range couplings (infinite number of neighbors). We carry out an extensive topological characterization of the momentum space to explore the possibility of obtaining higher order winding numbers and analyze the nature of their stability in the model. The occurrences of phase transitions from even-to-even and odd-to-odd winding numbers are observed with decreasing longer-rangeness in the system. We derive topological quantum critical lines and study them to understand the behavior of criticality. A suppression of higher order winding numbers is observed with decreasing longer-rangeness in the model. We show that the mechanism behind such phenomena is due to the superposition and vanishing of the topological quantum critical lines associated with the higher winding number. Through the study of the Berry connection, we show the possible different behaviors of critical lines when they undergo superposition along with the corresponding critical exponents. We analyze the behavior of the long-range models through the momentum space characterization. We also provide the exact solution for the problem and discuss the experimental aspects of the work.

Uhlmann phase winding in Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperature

Chang-Yan Wang, Yan He

We investigate the Uhlmann phase, a generalization of the celebrated Berry phase, for Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at finite temperature. The Uhlmann phase characterizes topological properties of mixed states, in contrast to the Berry phase, which is defined for pure states at zero temperature. Using the $\text{SU}(1,1)$ symmetry of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian, we derive a general formula for the Uhlmann phase of BECs. Numerical calculations reveal that the Uhlmann phase can differ from the Berry phase in the zero-temperature limit, contrary to previous studies. As the temperature increases, the Uhlmann phase exhibits a winding behavior, and we relate the total winding degree to the Berry phase. This winding indicates that the Uhlmann phase takes values on a Riemann surface. Furthermore, we propose an experimental scheme to measure the Uhlmann phase of BECs by purifying the density matrix using an atomic interferometer.
