Abstract

Continuous variable quantum secret sharing protocol can guarantee the unconditional security of secret key information based on the fundamental laws of physics. However, the state preparation operation may become non-ideal and imperfect in practical continuous variable quantum secret sharing scheme, which will introduce additional excess noise and affect the security of the scheme. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze it. We propose a practical continuous variable quantum secret sharing protocol based on imperfect state preparation. Specifically, in the proposed scheme, we assume that there are multiple users, and the imperfect state preparation performed by any user is equivalent to the corresponding untrusted third party using a phase insensitive amplifier to amplify the ideal modulator and laser owned by the user. The equivalent excess noise introduced by the imperfect state preparation can be calculated comprehensively and quantitatively through the gain of the corresponding phase insensitive amplifier. The results show that the continuous variable quantum secret sharing scheme is sensitive to the excess noise introduced by the imperfect state preparation operation, which will inevitably reduce its performance and security. Fortunately, the upper bound of the additional excess noise tolerance for the imperfect state preparation is achieved by using the specific gain formula of the phase insensitive amplifier, thus the security risks caused by the imperfect state preparation can be effectively solved. Due to considering the additional excess noise introduced by imperfect state preparation, tighter secret key rate curves can be obtained by the proposed scheme than those by the ideal continuous variable quantum secret sharing protocol. These results indicate that the proposed scheme can improve the practical security of continuous variable quantum secret sharing scheme, and provide a theoretical basis for its practical applications.

Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum secret sharing based on phase-insensitive amplifiers

Zeqi ZENG, Lianzheng FAN, Zhe QIN +2 more

As a core component of the continuous variable quantum secret sharing system, the performance of the detector is crucial to the entire system. Nevertheless, in practical circumstances, the detector is nonideal, whose defects can introduce noise interference into the signal and result in the performance degradation of the continuous-variable quantum secret sharing system. To solve this problem, we present a Gaussian-modulated continuous-variable quantum secret sharing based on phase-insensitive amplifiers. The phase-insensitive amplifier can uniformly amplify each orthogonal component of the signal and increase the signal power, thereby relatively reducing the noise interference caused by the defects of nonideal detectors to the signal and significantly improving the actual performance of the system. The numerical simulation shows that the phase-insensitive amplifier effectively increases the secret key rate and the secure transmission distance of the system, and the actual performance of the system under the high gain of the phase-insensitive amplifier closely approaches the performance of the system using an ideal detector. This work provides a novel approach to addressing the issue of reduced performance of continuous-variable quantum secret sharing caused by the defects of nonideal detectors.

Security bound of continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with imperfect phase reference calibration

Hongxin Ma, Peng Huang, Tao Wang +4 more

Phase reference calibration is a necessary procedure in practical continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) for the need of Bell-state measurement. However, the phase reference calibration may become imperfect in practical applications. We explored the practical security of CV-MDI-QKD with imperfect phase reference calibration under realistic conditions of lossy and noisy quantum channels. Specifically, a comprehensive framework is developed to model and characterize the imperfection of the practical phase reference calibration operation, which is mainly caused by the nonsynchronization of two remote lasers in senders. Security analysis shows that the imperfect phase reference calibration has significant side effects on the performance and security of the CV-MDI-QKD protocol. A tight security bound to thermal excess noise introduced by imperfect phase reference calibration is derived for reverse reconciliation against one-mode collective Gaussian attack in the asymptotic limit, and the upper threshold of this imperfection tolerated by the system is obtained. This security analysis framework can eliminate the security hazards caused by imperfect phase reference calibration without changing the existing CV-MDI-QKD system structure. In addition, this work will improve the practical security framework of CV-MDI-QKD protocol and provide theoretic instruction for the experimental implementation of CV-MDI-QKD protocol.

Practical continuous-variable quantum secret sharing using plug-and-play dual-phase modulation

Qin Liao, Haijie Liu, Yupeng Gong +3 more

Continuous-variable quantum secret sharing (CVQSS) allows a legitimate user, i.e., the dealer, to share a string of secret keys with multiple distant users. These users cannot individually recover the dealer's secret key unless they work cooperatively. Although the theoretical security proof of CVQSS has been well established, its practical security and implementation still face challenges. In this paper, we suggest a practical scheme for CVQSS using plug-and-play (P&P) configuration and dual-phase-modulated coherent state (DPMCS). The proposed scheme, called P&P DPM-based CVQSS, waives the necessity that each user has to prepare respective coherent states with their own lasers, thereby eliminating synchronous loopholes caused by different lasers and reducing the complexity of deployment of the user's stations. Moreover, the local oscillator (LO) can be generated locally by the dealer so that the whole CVQSS system could be naturally immune to all LO-aimed attacks. We derive the security bounds for P&P DPM-based CVQSS by properly making most of the existing security analysis techniques of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). In addition, an experimental concept of P&P DPM-based CVQSS is also presented, which can be deemed a guideline for future implementation.

Imperfect state preparation in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Wenyuan Liu, Xuyang Wang, Ning Wang +2 more

In continuous-variable quantum key distribution, the loss and excess noise of the quantum channel are key parameters that determine the secure key rate and the maximal distribution distance. We investigate the imperfect quantum state preparation in Gaussian modulation coherent-state protocol both theoretically and experimentally. We show that the Gaussian distribution characteristic of the prepared states in phase space is broken due to the incorrect calibration of the working parameters for the amplitude modulator and phase modulator. This further causes a significant increase of the excess noise and misestimate of the channel loss. To ensure an accurate estimate of the quantum channel parameters and achieve a reliable quantum key distribution, we propose and demonstrate two effective schemes to calibrate the working parameters of the modulators.

Underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme based on imperfect measurement basis choice

Xiao-Dong Wu, Duan Huang

Measurement basis choice is an essential step in the underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution system based on homodyne detection. However, in practice, finite bandwidth of analog-to-digital converter on the receiver’s side is limited, which can result in defects in the measurement basis choice. That is, the receiver cannot accurately modulate the corresponding phase angle on the phase modulator for measurement basis choice to implement homodyne detection. The imperfect measurement basis choice will introduce extra excess noise, which affects the security of underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme. To solve this problem, we propose an underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution scheme based on imperfect measurement basis choice, and analyze the influence of imperfect measurement basis choice on the performance of underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution system in detail. The research results indicate that the extra excess noise introduced by imperfect measurement basis choice can reduce the secret key rate and maximum transmission distance of the underwater Gaussian modulated quantum key distribution, thus reducing the security of the system. In order to achieve reliable underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution, we quantitatively analyze the extra excess noise introduced by choosing the imperfect measurement basis and obtain its security limit. Besides, we also consider the influence of different seawater depths on the security limit of the proposed scheme, effectively solving the security risks caused by the imperfect measurement basis choice. Furthermore, for the proposed scheme, we consider not only its asymptotic security case but also its composable security case, and the performance curves obtained in the latter are tighter than that achieved in the former. The proposed scheme aims to promote the practical process of underwater continuous variable quantum key distribution system and provide theoretical guidance for accurately evaluating the water channel parameters in underwater communication of global quantum communication networks.

Security of quantum key distribution with state-dependent imperfections

Hong-Wei Li, Zhen−Qiang Yin, Shuang Wang +3 more

In practical quantum key distribution system, the state preparation and measurement have state-dependent imperfections comparing with the ideal BB84 protocol. If the state-dependent imperfection can not be regarded as an unitary transformation, it should not be considered as part of quantum channel noise introduced by the eavesdropper, the commonly used secret key rate formula GLLP can not be applied correspondingly. In this paper, the unconditional security of quantum key distribution with state-dependent imperfections will be analyzed by estimating upper bound of the phase error rate in the quantum channel and the imperfect measurement. Interestingly, since Eve can not control all phase error in the quantum key distribution system, the final secret key rate under constant quantum bit error rate can be improved comparing with the perfect quantum key distribution protocol.
