Abstract

We investigate the properties of non-Gaussian quantum states generated by a three-photon quantum scissor (3-QS). Three different types of inputs to the 3-QS are considered: coherent state (CS), squeezed vacuum state (SVS), and optical field thermal state (TS). We discuss both the detection probability and fidelity of the output states. Our results demonstrate that when the input states have a smaller mean photon number, the output non-Gaussian state can exhibit high detection probability and high fidelity by selecting an appropriate transmissivity. Additionally, we calculate the Wigner functions for the various output states and analyze the non-classical properties by comparing the negative volume of the Wigner functions. The results indicate that the output non-Gaussian states display significant non-classical behavior, particularly when the transmissivity is high, with SVS as the input state showing the strongest effect. Moreover, we compare the performance of the 3-QS with that of the two-photon quantum scissors (2-QS). The findings demonstrate that the non-Gaussian states prepared by the 3-QS possess stronger non-classical characteristics. These results have potential implications for advancing the practical application of the 3-QS in quantum information technology.

Preparation and non-classicality of non-Gaussian quantum states based on catalytic quantum scissors

Kuizheng Zhang, Liyun Hu, Wei Ye +2 more

Abstract Based on the quantum scissor device proposed by Pegg et al , this paper implements a non-Gaussian quantum state preparation scheme. When considering the quantum photocatalysis of single-photon input and single-photon detection, the equivalent operator of catalytic quantum scissors is given in order to understand the physical nature of quantum scissors. When the coherent state is taken as the input state, for an asymmetric beam splitter, the output state can be truncated to zero photon, single photon and two photon components; for a symmetric beam splitter, the output state is only truncated to zero photon and two photon components. The non-classicality of the prepared non-Gaussian quantum states is discussed by the average photon number, signal-to-noise ratio, squeezing effcet and Wigner function. These results show that the output states can present strong non-classicality when modulating the amplitude of the coherent state and transmissivity of beam splitter.

Preparation of nonclassical states by displacement-based quantum scissors

Cunjin Liu, Min Yu, Wei Ye +2 more

We theoretically study the statistical properties of non-Gaussian states generated by inputting coherent state, single-mode squeezed vacuum state and thermal state to the displacement-based single-side quantum scissor. Compared to the case without the displacement, it is shown that the displacement-based single-side quantum scissor with large coherent amplitudes can not only effectively enhance the success probability of quantum state preparation in the high-transmittance range, but also improve the statistical properties of the generated states involving the average photon number, the signal to noise ratio and the nonclassicality. These results indicate that the usage of the displacement-based single-side quantum scissor may have potential applications for the optical interferometry.

Preparation and properties of a non-Gaussian state by quantum catalysis with thermal state input

Xiaoyan Zhang, Zhenbao Feng, Ji‐Suo Wang +2 more

We theoretically introduce a new kind of non-Gaussian state, namely, the mixture of multiphoton added thermal states, achieved through multiphoton measurements at one output port of the beam splitter (termed multiphoton catalysis) for thermal state input. We discuss the success probabilities of detection (the normalization factors). Furthermore, we investigate their nonclassical properties based on the nonclassical depth, photon number distribution, and photocount distribution. It is shown that the multiphoton catalysis presents a better nonclassical performance by controlling the thermal parameter, catalyzed photon number and the transmissivity of the beam splitter. In addition, the nonclassicality is further examined through the partial negativity of the Wigner function, which reveals that multiphoton catalysis operation can prepare highly nonclassical quantum states. These results indicate that the preparation of a non-Gaussian states may have potential applications in the realms of quantum information processing and quantum metrology.

Quantum properties of nonclassical states generated by an optomechanical system with catalytic quantum scissors

Heng-Mei Li, Bao-Hua Yang, Hong‐Chun Yuan +1 more

A scheme is proposed to investigate the non-classical states generated by a quantum scissors device (QSD) operating on the the cavity mode of an optomechanical system. When the catalytic QSD acts on the cavity mode of the optomechanical system, the resulting state contains only the vacuum, single-photon and two-photon states depending upon the coupling parameter of the optomechanical system as well as the transmission coefficients of beam splitters (BSs). Especially, the output state is just a class of multicomponent cat state truncations at time t = 2π by choosing the appropriate value of coupling parameter. We discuss the success probability of such a state and the fidelity between the output state and input state via QSD. Then the linear entropy is used to investigate the entanglement between the two subsystems, finding that QSD operation can enhance their entanglement degree. Furthermore, we also derive the analytical expression of the Wigner function (WF) for the cavity mode via QSD and numerically analyze the WF distribution in phase space at time t = 2π. These results show that the high non-classicality of output state can always be achieved by modulating the coupling parameter of the optomechanical system as well as the transmittance of BSs.

Finite-dimensional quantum states generated by conditional measurements on beam splitters

Heng-Mei Li, Xue-xiang Xu, Hong-Yun Huang +3 more

In this work, the basic idea of the quantum scissors (QS) device is slightly modified to generate finite-dimensional quantum states by means of conditional measurements on beam splitters (BSs). It turns out that a QS device with two single-photon inputs and two single-photon detections is just a projection operator composed of the vacuum state, one-photon state, and two-photon state, depending upon the transmission coefficients of BSs. As the most general example, we consider the squeezed coherent state as the input state and derive the analytical expression of the output state. Its nonclassical characteristics are analyzed in detail by means of the average photon number, intensity gain, and Wigner function. In addition, we extend this technique to the two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVS). The resulting state is just the generalized Bell state, containing only the twin vacuum, twin one-photon, and twin two-photon components, whose entanglement properties are quantified by the von Neumann entropy and Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen correlation. The results show that the entanglement of the truncated TMSVS is stronger than that of TMSVS within a certain range of squeezing parameter and transmissivity.

Comparison of nonclassical properties resulting from non-Gaussian operations

Fang Jia, Wei Ye, Qi Wang +2 more

Abstract Based on an asymmetrical beam splitter (ABS) and conditional measurement, we have investigated the nonclassical properties of non-Gaussian states in a unified form, including photon subtraction, photon addition and quantum catalysis, by deriving analytical expressions for photon number, squeezing effect, Mandel Q parameter and Wigner function. It is found that these properties not only depend on squeezing parameter and measurement, but also on the transmissivity of the ABS. Photon addition and quantum catalysis present a higher probability in the regions of low and high transmissivity, respectively. Although both single-photon subtraction and addition share a clear negative volume, the latter is considered to be a better choice for producing nonclassical states than the two others, if both success probability and negative volume in the small squeezing region are taken into consideration. Quantum catalysis is better in the large squeezing region and with low transmissivity. These results provide some reference for generating such non-Gaussian states.
