Transmission mode selection scheme for physical layer security in multi-user multi-relay systems

Asma Mabrouk, Kamel Tourki, Noureddine Hamdi

We study a relay and user selection scheme to improve the secrecy performance of cooperative multi-user multiple amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network. Nevertheless, relay transmission is highly susceptible to eavesdropping since confidential information is broadcasted twice, i.e., by the source and the relay. In particular, we propose a cooperative jamming aided secure transmission through the relay path. Furthermore, with the presence of the direct path, a transmission mode selection scheme is elaborated in such a way to reduce the amount of information leaked to non-selected users in the system, who may overhear the source message as eavesdroppers. Specifically, the selected relay is only activated when it has better secrecy performance than the source. We study the impact of outdated channel state information (CSI) on the system by deriving a closed-form lower bound for the secrecy outage probability (SOP). By investigating the effect of the jamming power level and the correlation coefficients imbalance, a comparison reveals that the proposed scheme outperforms the fixed transmission modes and its signal-to-noise ratio based counterpart. It is shown that the secrecy outage probability can be decreased as the number of destinations grows unless the number of relays is small. Importantly, optimal relay location and jamming power allocation significantly enhance the secrecy performance.

Secure Transmission in Cellular Multiuser Two-Way Amplify-and-Forward Relay Networks

Mahendra Kumar Shukla, Suneel Yadav, Neetesh Purohit

In this paper, we investigate the performance of secure cellular multiuser two-way amplify-and-forward relay networks, wherein one Na-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information bidirectionally with K single-antenna users (USs) by the assistance of a single-antenna relay node in the presence of a singleantenna passive eavesdropper. We employ user selection coupled with antenna selection (AS) scheme at the BS so as to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratios. In the considered system, by employing two possible combining techniques at the eavesdropper, viz., maximum ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC), we derive the novel tight closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) under Rayleigh fading channels. We present an asymptotic secrecy diversity order analysis of the considered system for the large transmit power, and demonstrate that the eavesdropping reduces the secrecy diversity order from min(Na, K) to 1. Further, we present some useful insights into the impact of eavesdropper and number of antennas and users on the SOP performance. It is shown that the eavesdropper has a severe impact on the SOP performance, regardless of number of antennas and users. The numerical and simulation results corroborate our theoretical findings, and demonstrate the influence of eavesdropper and relay positions on the SOP performance. We show that the SOP performance improves significantly when the eavesdropper is far away from the BS and USs. It is also shown that the SOP performance enhances noticeably if the relay location is chosen optimally, for different eavesdropper positions and/or different values of antennas and users. Moreover, our results also reveal that only coding gain rather than diversity gain is achieved by increasing Naand K, because of the dominance of information leakage by the first time phase. Furthermore, results illustrate that the SOP performance under SC technique employed at the eavesdropper outperforms the MRC-based technique for the broad range of transmit power.

Secrecy Enhancement of a Cognitive Two-Way Relay Network with Coordinate Interleaving

Muhammad Ajmal Khan

This paper studies the physical-layer security of a cognitive two-way relay network under a spectrum sharing approach, where two users communicate with each other directly and via a decode-and-forward intermediate relay in the presence of a passive eavesdropper using the spectrum of the primary user. The paper proposes to incorporate coordinate interleaving into the cognitive two-way relay network to enhance its secrecy performance. The coordinate interleaver is applied at both sources and the relay to rotate and interleave the signal points before the transmission which enables to forward each component of the signal over an independent fading channel. The proposed scheme increases the spectral efficiency that is, it transmits more symbols in given time slots, thus increasing the secrecy capacity of the proposed scheme compared to the conventional system. Therefore, the secrecy performance analysis of the proposed scheme is completely different than that of the conventional system. The paper investigates the probability of secrecy outage, probability of intercept, and the probability of non-zero capacity for the proposed scheme. In addition, the paper also compares the secrecy performance of the proposed scheme with the conventional system. Finally, the paper confirms that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional system.
