Abstract

The influence of gravity on quantum key distribution cannot be ignored in practical space communication. This paper provides a thorough analysis of the effectiveness of gravity on continuous-variable quantum key distribution with discrete-modulated states. By calculating the acceleration in both inertial and non-inertial reference systems based on the discrete variable variance calculation formula, the gain coefficient is obtained. Based on this parameter, an improved protocol with a high key rate over a spatial transmission distance of 390 km is proposed, enabling the practical application of quantum key distribution techniques. The results can be used to demonstrate the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with discrete modulation influenced by gravity. This paper not only extends the range of discrete modulation states, but also enhances the impact of relativistic quantum information.

Thermal-State Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Under the Effects of Gravity

Li Zhang, Jiannan Huang, J Zhou

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution has gradually shifted from optical fiber communication to space communication. In free-space quantum communication, the influence of gravity cannot be ignored. In light of the influence of gravity, this study assesses the efficacy of the thermal-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol in a non-inertial reference frame. This differs from the conventional scenario in an inertial reference frame, where pure vacuum Gaussian states are employed without consideration of the influence of gravity. This study examines the potential and challenges of quantum key distribution in the presence of gravitational effects. The feasibility of generating the key under the influence of gravity through the lens of quantum state transfer in a non-inertial reference system is also analyzed. It presents a comprehensive mathematical derivation and simulation of the secret key rate for maintaining a positive rate under specific conditions. Furthermore, it presents a detailed implementation plan for thermal-state quantum key distribution in a non-inertial reference frame, particularly in the context of gravity. It offers valuable insights into the performance of quantum communication in unconventional settings.

Feasibility analysis study of discrete modulation continuous variable quantum key distribution for spatial channels

Xin Sun, Junjie GUO, Yujie CHEN +7 more

Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has emerged as a promising candidate for quantum-secure communication due to its experimentally demonstrated high key rates in fiber-optic channels. However, the feasibility of discrete modulation CV-QKD in satellite-to-ground downlinks remains an open question due to practical challenges such as high transmission loss, limited communication windows, and atmospheric turbulence. In this work, a comprehensive framework is proposed to evaluate the feasibility of discrete modulation CV-QKD by integrating orbital dynamics and atmospheric channel models, and to comprehensively analyze the influence of the parameter space on free-space discrete modulation CV-QKD. To achieve this, a free-space CV-QKD simulation platform is employed, which calculates the elevation angle and transmission distance based on precise orbital models, thereby providing a more practical assessment of the key rate for discrete modulation CV-QKD. Simulation results verify the feasibility and practicality of discrete modulation CV-QKD in satellite-based quantum communication systems. Furthermore, the critical factors influencing the key rate performance are identified, and parameter optimization strategies are proposed, providing theoretical support for realizing the future satellite-to-ground discrete modulation CV-QKD.

Discrete modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on quantum catalysis

Wei Ye, Ying Guo, Ying Xia +4 more

Compared with discrete variable quantum key distribution (DVQKD), continuous variable (CV) QKD has high security bit rate and other advantages, which, however, are slightly insufficient in secure transmission distance. In addition, the application of quantum catalysis has significantly improved the performance of Gaussian modulated (GM) CVQKD, especially in secure transmission distance. Recently, the application of quantum catalysis has significantly improved the performance of GM-CVQKD. However, whether it can be used to improve the performance of discrete modulated (DM) CVQKD protocol is still ambiguous. Therefore, a scheme of DM CVQKD protocol based on quantum catalysis is proposed in this paper to further improve the performance of the proposed protocol in terms of secure key rate, secure transmission distance and maximum tolerable noise. Our results show that under the same parameters, when the transmittance T introduced by quantum catalysis is optimized, the proposed scheme can effectively further improve the performance of QKD system compared with the original four-state modulation CVQKD scheme. In particular, when the tolerable excess noise is 0.002, the use of quantum catalysis can break the safe communication distance of 300 km with a key rate of 10–8 bits/pulse. However, if this noise is too large, the improvement in the effect of quantum catalysis on protocol performance will be restrained. In addition, in order to highlight the advantages of the use of quantum catalysis, the ultimate limit PLOB (Pirandola-Laurenza-Ottaviani-Banchi) bound of point-to-point quantum communication is given in this paper. The simulation results indicate that although neither the original scheme nor the proposed scheme can break the bound, compared with the former, the latter can be close to the boundary in long-distance transmission. These results provide theoretical basis for achieving the ultimate goal of global quantum security communication.

Improving the performance of continuous variable quantum key distribution using fading effects of free-space channel

Zeyu Zhang, Chengrui Zhu, Guangqiang He

Quantum key distribution can be used to share secret keys with information-theoretic security between two legitimate partners for secure communication. In the case of satellite communication, free-space channel is the only way to transmit information, thus research on its properties is of great significance to quantum cryptographic communication. In this paper, we thoroughly analyze the influence of free-space channel fading effects on continuous variable quantum key distribution and for the first time prove that random distribution (such as Rayleigh distribution, Rice distribution and et al.) of free-space channel fading coefficients can be used to increase secret information rates and improve system stability against excess noises. Our results offer academic reference for practical applications of ground-space and space-space quantum communication and global quantum communication network.

Discrete modulation continuous variable quantum key distribution under fast fading channel

Jinyi Li, Jian Zhou, Yanyan Feng +2 more

Abstract After decades of development, continuous variable quantum key distribution technology still cannot meet people’s needs for secure communication over long distances. Free-space quantum communication provides a new way for secure communication over long distances. However, because the communication connected in free space is inevitably affected by atmospheric turbulence, the transmission rate of the channel changes rapidly according to the probability distribution, making it difficult for the communication personnel to determine the transmission rate of the channel. At the same time, discrete modulated continuously variable quantum key Distribution protocol (DM-CVQKD) has certain advantages over Gauss modulated continuously variable quantum key Distribution protocol (GM-CVQKD) in the communication distance. Therefore, this paper analyzes the key rate of DM-CVQKD in this case (that is, in the fast attenuation channel), proves that it can resist the collective attack, and observes the relationship between the parameters and the key rate in the fast attenuation channel by numerical simulation and control variables. Finally, through the analysis of numerical simulation results, it is found that DM-CVQKD can still maintain a high key rate under certain conditions, which proves that long-distance free space quantum communication is feasible under certain conditions. At the same time, it was found that the performance of DM-CVQKD was affected by the extreme case where Eve completely controlled the instantaneous transmittance.

Amplitude-boosting attack against practical discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Mingze Wu, Yiming Bian, Junhui Li +2 more

Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution offers significant practical deployment advantages due to its straightforward state preparation and high compatibility with coherent optical communication systems. However, security analysis and parameter estimation of discrete-modulated protocol are different with Gaussian-modulated protocols, which could cause different practical security problems. Herein, we investigate the amplitude-boosting attack against discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems and assess its impact on system performance. Our findings reveal that this attack could cause overestimation of secret key rate perceived by Alice and Bob, thereby opening a security loophole, and the vulnerability could be severer than Gaussian modulation. Additionally, we summarize defensive countermeasures, marking a crucial step towards enhancing the practical security of discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution.
