Optical quadrature squeezing via the Faraday effect in cavity optomagnonics

Abstract

Coherently manipulating quadrature squeezing is highly desired for precision measurement applications, but remains challenging due to an inaccessible standard quantum limit in most micro- and nanostructures. Here, we propose an efficient scheme to generate quadrature squeezing in a cavity optomagnonical system. Taking the magnon–photon interaction induced by the Faraday effect into consideration, we report that a strong quadrature squeezing can be achieved in the effective resonant cavity modes that obey the mode-splitting theory of Bogoliubov transformation. Using experimentally achievable parameters, we illustrate that increasing the magnon–photon coupling strength or input field intensity contributes to improving both the output spectral intensity and the amount of squeezing of the spectra, where perfect squeezing is only located at the position of the single resonant cavity mode. Interestingly enough, the nearly perfect quadrature squeezing at the double frequencies of the effective resonant cavity modes can be achieved by adjusting the input field frequency and intensity.

Quadrature squeezing of a higher-order sideband spectrum in cavity optomechanics

Shaopeng Liu, Wen‐Xing Yang, Zhonghu Zhu +2 more

We propose an efficient scheme to generate quadrature squeezing of a higher-order sideband spectrum in an optomechanical system. This is achieved by exploiting a well-established optomechanical circumstance, where a second-order nonlinearity is embedded into the optomechanical cavity driven by a strong control field and a weak probe pulse. Using experimentally achievable parameters, we demonstrate that the second-order nonlinearity intensity and the frequency detuning of a control field allow us to modify the amplitude of higher-order sidebands and improve the amount of squeezing of a higher-order sideband spectrum. Furthermore, in the presence of a strong second-order nonlinearity, an optimizing quadrature squeezing of a higher-order sideband spectrum can be achieved, which provides a practical opportunity to design the squeezed frequency combs and other precision measurements.

Magnon squeezing by two-tone driving of a qubit in cavity-magnon-qubit systems

Qi Guo, Jiong Cheng, Huatang Tan +1 more

We propose a scheme for preparing magnon squeezed states in a hybrid cavity-magnon-qubit system. The system consists of a microwave cavity that simultaneously couples to a magnon mode of a macroscopic yttrium-iron-garnet sphere via the magnetic-dipole interaction and to a transmon-type superconducting qubit via the electric-dipole interaction. By far detuning from the magnon-qubit system, the microwave cavity is adiabatically eliminated. The magnon mode and the qubit then get effectively coupled via the mediation of virtual photons of the microwave cavity. We show that by driving the qubit with two microwave fields and by appropriately choosing the drive frequencies and strengths, magnonic parametric amplification can be realized, which leads to magnon quadrature squeezing with the noise below vacuum fluctuation. We provide optimal conditions for achieving magnon squeezing, and moderate squeezing can be obtained using currently available parameters. The generated squeezed states are of a magnon mode involving more than ${10}^{18}$ spins and thus macroscopic quantum states. This work may find promising applications in quantum information processing and high-precision measurements based on magnons and in the study of macroscopic quantum states.

Generation of squeezed states of magnons and photons based on the Kerr effect in cavity-magnon hybrid system

Cheng‐Hua Bai, Suying Bai

Abstract Based on the magnon Kerr effect, we show how to generate quantum squeezed states of magnons and photons in the cavity–magnon hybrid system. We find that the squeezing of magnons can be successfully induced by the magnon nonlinearity and the larger two-magnon effect strength will be beneficial to achieving the stronger squeezing of magnon. Resorting to the beam-splitter interaction between the magnons and photons, we further show that the squeezing of photons can be also effectively achieved. By properly choosing the system parameters, we demonstrate that the desired direction of the generated squeezing both for magnons and photons can be flexibly switched between orthogonal directions. Our scheme provides an alternative manipulation method to explore the quantum phenomena with nonlinear effects and also has significant potential applications in quantum precision measurement.

Generation of robust optical entanglement in cavity optomagnonics

Hong Xie, Le‐Wei He, Chang-Geng Liao +2 more

We propose a scheme to realize robust optical entanglement in cavity optomagnonics, where two optical whispering gallery modes (WGMs) couple to a magnon mode in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. The beam-splitter-like and two-mode squeezing magnon-photon interactions can be realized simultaneously when the two optical WGMs are driven by external fields. Entanglement between the two optical modes is then generated via their coupling with magnons. By exploiting the destructive quantum interference between the bright modes of the interface, the effects of initial thermal occupations of magnons can be eliminated. Moreover, the excitation of the Bogoliubov dark mode is capable of protecting the optical entanglement from thermal heating effects. Therefore, the generated optical entanglement is robust against thermal noise and the requirement of cooling the magnon mode is relaxed. Our scheme may find applications in the study of magnon-based quantum information processing.

Recent progress on optomagnetic coupling and optical manipulation based on cavity-optomagnonics

Kai Wang, Yong‐Pan Gao, Rongzhen Jiao +1 more

Abstract Recently, the photon—magnon coherent interaction based on the collective spins excitation in ferromagnetic materials has been achieved experimentally. Under the prospect, the magnons are proposed to store and process quantum information. Meanwhile, cavity-optomagnonics which describes the interaction between photons and magnons has been developing rapidly as an interesting topic of the cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here in this short review, we mainly introduce the recent theoretical and experimental progress in the field of optomagnetic coupling and optical manipulation based on cavity-optomagnonics. According to the frequency range of the electromagnetic field, cavity optomagnonics can be divided into microwave cavity optomagnonics and optical cavity optomagnonics, due to the different dynamics of the photon—magnon interaction. As the interaction between the electromagnetic field and the magnetic materials is enhanced in the cavity-optomagnonic system, it provides great significance to explore the nonlinear characteristics and quantum properties for different magnetic systems. More importantly, the electromagnetic response of optomagnonics covers the frequency range from gigahertz to terahertz which provides a broad frequency platform for the multi-mode controlling in quantum systems.

Output field-quadrature measurements and squeezing in ultrastrong cavity-QED

Roberto Stassi, Salvatore Savasta, Luigi Garziano +2 more

We study the squeezing of output quadratures of an electro-magnetic field escaping from a resonator coupled to a general quantum system with arbitrary interaction strengths. The generalized theoretical analysis of output squeezing proposed here is valid for all the interaction regimes of cavity-quantum electrodynamics: from the weak to the strong, ultrastrong, and deep coupling regimes. For coupling rates comparable or larger then the cavity resonance frequency, the standard input–output theory for optical cavities fails to calculate the variance of output field-quadratures and predicts a non-negligible amount of output squeezing, even if the system is in its ground state. Here we show that, for arbitrary interaction strength and for general cavity-embedded quantum systems, no squeezing can be found in the output-field quadratures if the system is in its ground state. We also apply the proposed theoretical approach to study the output squeezing produced by: (i) an artificial two-level atom embedded in a coherently-excited cavity; and (ii) a cascade-type three-level system interacting with a cavity field mode. In the latter case the output squeezing arises from the virtual photons of the atom-cavity dressed states. This work extends the possibility of predicting and analyzing the results of continuous-variable optical quantum-state tomography when optical resonators interact very strongly with other quantum systems.
