Abstract

Abstract This paper proposes a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter that uses rare earth-doped crystals to overcome the limitations of current atomic filtering technology, which include limited working wavelength and Doppler broadening. The paper analyses Er3+: LiYF4 1530 nm as an example filter. The results show that the proposed filter achieves high transmission while maintaining an ultra-narrow bandwidth transmission spectrum. The maximum transmission efficiency reaches 94.8% with a transmission bandwidth of hundred trillions HZ. The position of the transmission peak can be tuned by adjusting the size of the magnetic field, enabling the conversion of the transmission spectrum between the line center and the line wing.

Proposed solid-state Faraday anomalous-dispersion optical filter

Weibin Lin, Zong‐Quan Zhou, Chuan-Feng Li +1 more

We propose a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on a rare-earth ion doped crystal. We present theoretical analyses for the solid-state FADOF transmission. Our theoretical model predicts a maximum transmission efficiency of $71%$ and a double-peaked transmission spectrum with a bandwidth of 6 GHz under current experimental conditions. Our proposal may have important applications in optical communications.

Theoretical Analysis of Characteristics of Cs Faraday Anomalous Dispersion Optical Filtering's Use in Edge Filters

Yongtao Zhang

The use of Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filtering in edge filters was proposed, which can cover the shortages of edge filters in using resonant transitions in the ~(127)I_2 and ~(129)I_2 molecules. The characteristics of filtering and frequency tuning of Faraday anomalous dispersion spectrum of Cs 6S_(1/2)7P_(1/2) transition were analyzed theoretically. The results show that there are two steep transmission peaks in line-wing symmetrically in the Faraday anomalous dispersion spectrum of Cs atoms,by adjusting the temperature of atomic vapor cell and the external magnetic field strength, the central frequencies of the transmission peaks in line-wing can be tuned to the desired locations.

Faraday Anomalous Dispersion Optical Filter at the 87Rb D1 Line

刘阳 LIU Yang, 闫西章 YAN Xi-zhang, 王潇潇 WANG Xiao-xiao +1 more

To obtain the weak signal light detection from the high background noise,a study on ultra-narrow bandwidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter(FADOF) at the 87Rb D1 line,5S1/2F=2→5P1/2 F′=1transmission(795 nm) is demonstrated experimentally.A sample cell filled with Rubidium atoms in which the proportion of 87Rb is greater than that of the nature rubidium is placed in a homogeneous magnetic field between two crossed Glan-Thompson polarizers. The incident probe light goes through the sample cell, and interacts with the atoms.Because of the Faraday rotation, the function of the filter can be realized. When the experiment condition changed, the result of transmission spectrum changed accordingly. With the temperature rising from 340 K to 360 K,the variation of the transmission spectrum is recorded particularly. And the reason for the variation is analyzed carefully. At a proper temperature and magnetic field,a transmission spectrum narrowed to ~220 MHz is obtained, and the peak transmission is about 48%.The performance of the87Rb D1 line is better than that of the 85Rb.

Na-Faraday rotation filtering: The optimal point

Wilhelm Kiefer, Robert Löw, Jörg Wrachtrup +1 more

Narrow-band optical filtering is required in many spectroscopy applications to suppress unwanted background light. One example is quantum communication where the fidelity is often limited by the performance of the optical filters. This limitation can be circumvented by utilizing the GHz-wide features of a Doppler broadened atomic gas. The anomalous dispersion of atomic vapours enables spectral filtering. These, so-called, Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filters (FADOFs) can be by far better than any commercial filter in terms of bandwidth, transition edge and peak transmission. We present a theoretical and experimental study on the transmission properties of a sodium vapour based FADOF with the aim to find the best combination of optical rotation and intrinsic loss. The relevant parameters, such as magnetic field, temperature, the related optical depth, and polarization state are discussed. The non-trivial interplay of these quantities defines the net performance of the filter. We determine analytically the optimal working conditions, such as transmission and the signal to background ratio and validate the results experimentally. We find a single global optimum for one specific optical path length of the filter. This can now be applied to spectroscopy, guide star applications, or sensing.

Optical filtering characteristic of potassium Faraday optical filter

Yundong Zhang, Xiaoling Jia, Zuguang Ma +1 more

An ultra-narrow bandwidth potassium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at the D/sub 2/ line is studied theoretically and experimentally. The effect of temperature on the characteristics of the potassium Faraday filter is discussed and the transmission versus temperature is given. Our research results show that the transmission of the K-FADOF reaches nearly 90% with a bandwidth of only 1.5 GHz. To meet different requirements, K-FADOF can operate at line-center or in the line-wing by changing the working parameters.

Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter for the Cs 455 nm transition

B. Yin, Thomas M. Shay

The performance of a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter operating on the Cs 455-nm transition is calculated. The results show that the filter can provide high transmission (0.96), very narrow pass bandwidth (0.9 GHz), and low equivalent noise bandwidth (3.3 GHz) under optimum filter operational conditions. The optimum filter conditions also suppress the transmission of the Cs 459-nm transition.>
