Abstract

To realize a stable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) 1550-nm light source for the generation of non-classical states, a ring auto-pump-depleted singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO) with the assistance of second-harmonic-wave generation (SHG) is designed and built in this Letter. A magnesium oxide doped periodically polarized lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) crystal and a lithium triborate (LBO) crystal are employed as the optical parametric downconversion (OPDC) and SHG crystals, respectively. Especially, the introduced SHG can firstly increase the loss difference between the lasing and non-lasing modes so that the dual-mode or multi-mode coupling in the achieved SRO can be effectively eliminated and the stable SLM operation is achieved. At the same time, the SHG will automatically adjust the output coupling efficiency of SRO, so as to achieve efficient conversion efficiency and auto-pump depletion of SRO. In addition, due to the SHG, it is easy to achieve the low-intensity noise multi-wavelength output for the stable SLM SRO. As a result, the output powers of the SLM 1550 nm and 775 nm are up to 4.05 W and 3.25 W, respectively, and the total optical conversion of the built SRO can achieve 45.58%. The presented method paves a way to develop a compact stable SLM multi-wavelength SRO, and the obtained SRO is further beneficial to develop compact continuous-variable non-classical light fields.

Efficient single-pass third-harmonic generation from 1560 nm to 520 nm for pumping doubly-resonant OPO

Kong Zhang, Junmin Wang

A ~545 mW single-frequency tunable 520 nm green laser has been demonstrated using a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) bulk crystal based on single-pass third-harmonic generation (THG) of a 1560 nm laser via single-pass second-harmonic generation (SHG) followed by single-pass sum-frequency generation (SFG). In single-pass SHG, two cascaded periodically-poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgO:LN) crystals were used, and ~3.5 W of 780.25 nm doubled laser output is produced, corresponding to maximum doubling efficiency of 26.8%. The system can provide a pump source (520 nm) for an optical parametric oscillator for two-colour entangled continuous-variable optical field generation at 1560 and 780 nm and two-colour local oscillators for homodyne detection.

Watt-level single-frequency optical parametric oscillator around 2 µm

Nicola Coluccelli, Giovanni Cichelli, M. Polastri +3 more

A single-frequency optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating in the wavelength range around 2 µm is reported. The OPO comprises a periodically poled LiNbO 3 (PPLN) crystal for quasi-phase matching and a four-mirror ring-cavity resonant to the signal. The OPO signal and idler are tuned from 1.89 to 2.05 µm and from 2.21 to 2.42 µm, respectively, by changing the crystal temperature. Output powers in excess of 2 W are demonstrated at a pump power of 9 W for both the signal and idler over all of the respective tuning ranges. A detailed characterization of the intensity and frequency noise is presented. The OPO exhibits an integrated intensity noise below 0.1% and a linewidth of ∼58 kHz for an observation time of 1 ms. The reported performance makes this source an ideal candidate for the generation of squeezed light around 2 µm via cascaded second-harmonic generation (SHG) and parametric downconversion (PDC).

Broadband Quantum Photon Source in Step-Chirped Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Waveguide

Xiao‐Xu Fang, Guo-Liang Shentu, Lu He

Broadband nonlinear optical devices play a critical role in both classical and quantum optics. Here, we design and fabricate a 6.82-mm-long step-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate~(CPPLN) waveguide on lithium niobate on insulator, which enables quasi-phase matching over a broad bandwidth for second-harmonic generation~(SHG) and spontaneous parametric down-conversion~(SPDC). The SHG achieves an average efficiency of 54.4\%/W/cm$^2$ over the first-harmonic wavelength range of 1510~nm-1620~nm, paving the way for realizing SPDC across a wide range of pump wavelengths. For SPDC, by tuning the pump wavelength to 775~nm, 780~nm, and 785~nm, we achieve broadband photon-pair generation with a maximum full bandwidth and brightness up to 99~THz~(846~nm) and 20~GHz/mW/nm, respectively. Our findings provide an efficient and experiment-friendly approach for generating broadband photon pairs, which holds significant promise for advancing applications in quantum metrology.

Second harmonic generator with an on-chip wavelength division demultiplexer

Bofu Zhao, Simin Yu, Ruixin Zhou +1 more

The second harmonic generation (SHG) technology based on quasi-phase matching in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) has reached a high level of maturity. However, the generated second harmonic signal is often overwhelmed by pump light, making direct application challenging. In this paper, we have designed and fabricated, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, an integrated second harmonic generation device with on-chip wavelength division demultiplexing (WDDM). The device achieves a second harmonic conversion efficiency of 1200% W −1 cm −2 and provides approximately 20 dB attenuation in the telecom C-band near 1550 nm, while introducing about 4 dB insertion loss in the visible light near 775 nm, significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The WDDM section employs a cascaded linearly tapered waveguide design, which offers broadband coupling efficiency. This result shows promise as a foundation for fully integrated quantum photonic chips.

High-flux photon-pair source from electrically induced parametric down conversion after second-harmonic generation in single optical superlattice

Dong Huang, Weilong She

We present here a possible high-flux photon-pair source constructed by single lithium niobate optical superlattice (OSL) with a combined quasi-periodically and periodically poled structure, which is from the principle of electrically induced parametric down conversion (PDC) after second-harmonic generation (SHG), predicted by the united theory developed in this paper, in which SHG, PDC and electro-optic (EO) effect are comparably treated as two-order nonlinear effects. In the OSL, the e-polarized fundamental frequency photons are first converted to double frequency ones with the same polarization; then the PDC process is triggered by EO effect when the fundamental frequency photons are almost exhausted; finally, the double frequency photons are converted again to a series of two-photon pair of fundamental wave. It is demonstrated that at 100 degrees C, in a 20.2mm long OSL with a 30V / mm applied electric field, a 100MW/cm(2), 1080 nm laser beam can be translated to a flux of high-purity two-photon pairs with a conversion efficiency close to 100%; and for a longer OSL the pump intensity can be further lowered. The device can also act as an ultra-low field electro-optic switch.
