Abstract

There are several groups have implemented polarization encoding measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD). However, these groups use manual polarization controller to achieve the initial polarization state for encoders, and some of the encoders cannot fully satisfy the two bases for polarization encoding quantum key distribution. Here, we apply an all-fiber and calibration-free intrinsically stable polarization-modulated unit (APMU), which can maintain stable encoding for several hours without any calibration. A proof-of-principle demonstration of MDI-QKD based on our APMU is implemented with the four-intensity decoy state protocol. The proposed APMU can realize stable MDI-QKD encoding and simplify the operation for Alice and Bob, which makes the polarization encoding MDI-QKD more practical.

Proof-of-principle demonstration of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution based on intrinsically stable polarization-modulated units

The experimental demonstration of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) has been widely demonstrated. Thus far, several experimental groups have implemented polarization encoding MDI-QKD but with manual polarization controllers, or polarization modulators that make circular polarization states unstable. Here, we apply an intrinsically stable polarization-modulated unit (PMU) to MDI-QKD so that Alice and Bob can modulate four BB84 polarization states, all of which can be kept stable from even the harsh environment. Moreover, our PMU can provide two operational polarization encoding modes suitable to different application scenarios. A proof-of-principle demonstration of MDI-QKD based on our PMU is implemented with an interference visibility of 46.6%, an average quantum bit error rate of 1.49% for the Z basis and the secure key rate of 4.25 × 10−6 bits per pulse. The proposed study is helpful for building polarization encoding MDI-QKD systems with better stability.

Experimental demonstration of polarization encoding quantum key distribution system based on intrinsically stable polarization-modulated units

Jindong Wang, Xiaojuan Qin, Yinzhu Jiang +5 more

A proof-of-principle demonstration of a one-way polarization encoding quantum key distribution (QKD) system is demonstrated. This approach can automatically compensate for birefringence and phase drift. This is achieved by constructing intrinsically stable polarization-modulated units (PMUs) to perform the encoding and decoding, which can be used with four-state protocol, six-state protocol, and the measurement-device-independent (MDI) scheme. A polarization extinction ratio of about 30 dB was maintained for several hours over a 50 km optical fiber without any adjustments to our setup, which evidences its potential for use in practical applications.

Polarization-multiplexing-based measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution without phase reference calibration

Hongwei Liu, Jipeng Wang, Haiqiang Ma +1 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) is proved to be able to eliminate all potential detector side channel attacks. Combining with the reference frame independent (RFI) scheme, the complexity of practical system can be reduced because of the unnecessary alignment for reference frame. Here, based on polarization multiplexing, we propose a time-bin encoding structure, and experimentally demonstrate the RFI-MDI-QKD protocol. Thanks to this, two of the four Bell states can be distinguished, whereas only one is used to generate the secure key in previous RFI-MDI-QKD experiments. As far as we know, this is the first demonstration for RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with clock rate of 50 MHz and distance of more than hundred kilometers between legitimate parties Alice and Bob. In asymptotic case, we experimentally compare RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with the original MDI-QKD protocol at the transmission distance of 160 km, when the different misalignments of the reference frame are deployed. By considering observables and statistical fluctuations jointly, four-intensity decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with biased bases is experimentally achieved at the transmission distance of 100km and 120km. The results show the robustness of our scheme, and the key rate of RFI-MDI-QKD can be improved obviously under a large misalignment of the reference frame.

Polarization discriminated time‐bin phase‐encoding measurement‐device‐independent quantum key distribution

Guang‐Zhao Tang, Chunyan Li, Min Wang

The correctness of measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) has been demonstrated in tremendous amount of researches. There is an interesting proposal which can collect all coincidences by transforming two pairs of orthogonal polarization states into the encoding states of MDI-QKD. The attempt is meaningful. Here, based on this proposal, we realize a proof-of-principle demonstration. Only one phase modulator is applied to encode the qubits. The phase-reference-frame is aligned by modulating the phase modulator of the phase modulation unit. We modulate the signals into three intensities, and a secure key rate of bits per pulse is successfully demonstrated. Our experimental system simplifies the encoding process and has the potential to implement the reference-frame-independent MDI-QKD protocol.

Resource-Efficient Real-Time Polarization Compensation for MDI-QKD with Rejected Data

Olinka Bedroya, Chenyang Li, Wenyuan Wang +3 more

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) closes all the security loopholes in the detection system and is a promising solution for secret key sharing. Polarization encoding is the most common QKD encoding scheme, as it is straightforward to prepare and measure. However, implementing polarization encoding in MDI QKD imposes extra challenges, as polarization alignment must be maintained over both mutually unbiased bases and be maintained for both paths (Alice-Charlie and Bob-Charlie). Polarization alignment is usually done by interrupting the QKD process (reducing overall key generation rates) or using additional classical laser sources multiplexed with quantum channels for polarization alignment. Since low key rates and cost are the two most pressing challenges preventing wide adoption of QKD systems, using additional resources or reducing key rates runs contrary to making QKD commercially viable. Therefore, we propose and implement a novel polarization compensation scheme in the MDI-QKD system that avoids the aforementioned drawbacks by recycling part of discarded detection events. Our scheme evaluates the polarization drift in real-time based on single measurements corresponding to decoy intensities. Our fully automated experimental demonstration maintains the average polarization drift below 0.13 rad over 40 km of spooled fibre (without an insulating jacket) for at least four hours. The average quantum bit error rate is 3.8 % , and we achieved an average key rate of 7.45×10−6 bits per pulse.

Experimental Demonstration of Polarization Encoding Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution

Zhiyuan Tang, Zhongfa Liao, Feihu Xu +3 more

We demonstrate the first implementation of polarization encoding measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD), which is immune to all detector side-channel attacks. Active phase randomization of each individual pulse is implemented to protect against attacks on imperfect sources. By optimizing the parameters in the decoy state protocol, we show that it is feasible to implement polarization encoding MDI-QKD with commercial off-the-shelf devices. A rigorous finite key analysis is applied to estimate the secure key rate. Our work paves the way for the realization of a MDI-QKD network, in which the users only need compact and low-cost state-preparation devices and can share complicated and expensive detectors provided by an untrusted network server.
