Abstract

Abstract Photoassociation (PA) of 85Rb atoms from the ground X 1 Σ g + state to the excited A 1 Σ g + and b 3 Π u states by two-color laser pulses at 100 μ K × k B is investigated by using quantum wavepacket method. Two pulses with detunings δ 1 and δ 2 varying from −1.0 to 1. cm−1 are taken into account. The specific case δ 1 = − δ 2 is generalized to the condition of arbitrary combination of δ 1 and δ 2 for both the Gaussian-pulse field and the slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off (STRT) field. It is found that the introduce of the detunings in the two pluses can enhance the asymmetry of the time profile and broaden the linewidth of the laser field. The two factors can further enhance the PA probability for both resonant and nonresonant regions. Compared to the Gaussian field, the STRT field which is even more asymmetric in time profile and more broaden in linewidth can significantly enhance the PA probability, with the nonresonant transition dominating the PA process. It can be expected that once the two detunings are both positive, which is a relatively loose restriction for coherent control, a considerable PA probability can be obtained in a two-color STRT field.

Thermal-average effects on photoassociation with a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off laser pulse

Yong‐Chang Han, Jinwei Hu, Binbin Wang

We investigate theoretically the photoassociation (PA) of two $\mathrm{Cs}$ atoms using a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off (STRT) laser pulse at the temperature of $54\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{K}$ by taking the thermal average of the initial continuum states into account. For comparison, the PA probabilities under the action of the STRT and typical Gauss-type pulses are calculated, respectively. The rising and falling times of the STRT pulse are set to be ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{r}=10$ ps and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{f}=0.2$ ps, and the two Gauss-type pulses are set to be ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{r}={\ensuremath{\tau}}_{f}=10$ ps and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{r}={\ensuremath{\tau}}_{f}=5.1$ ps, respectively. Compared to the calculation considering a single initial continuum state (non-thermal-average calculations), the PA probabilities with the consideration of the thermal average are reduced to different extents according to different laser pulses. The PA process induced by the STRT pulse is more robust than that by the two Gauss-type pulses. For the STRT pulse, the PA probability is reduced by roughly 30%, while for the two Gauss-type pulses, it is reduced by roughly 97% and 64%, respectively. Because of the larger bandwidth and the asymmetric time profile of the STRT pulse, the PA probability induced by this pulse is related to both the off-resonant and the near-resonant transitions in a much broader phase space formed by the initial continuum states and the final vibrational states. Consequently, the thermal average of the initial continuum states has relatively smaller influence on the PA probability induced by the STRT pulse. By changing the pulse shape of the standard Gaussian to the ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}$ and the Lorentz ones, the STRT pulse still results in the highest PA probability and is the most robust to the thermal average.

Formation of 85 Rb 2 ultracold molecules via photoassociation by two-color laser fields modulating the Gaussian amplitude

Yin Hui Huang, Wei Zhang, Gao‐Ren Wang +2 more

The formations of ${}^{85}{\text{Rb}}_{2}$ molecules via photoassociation (PA) steered by two-color laser fields are explored theoretically in order to find an efficient and robust PA scheme. The PA processes steered by the PA pulses modulated by two Gaussian pulses and by two chirped pulses are discussed and compared in detail. The two pulses are coherent in the picosecond range and reach their maxima at the same time. The influences of the linear chirp rate, the frequency difference between two pulses, and the phase shift of the modulated envelope with respect to the maximum of the Gaussian envelope on the PA process are investigated. The yield of photoassociated molecules on vibrational levels with a binding energy of $>$1.0 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ with respect to the $5S+5{P}_{1/2}$ dissociation limit can apparently be enhanced by choosing proper pulse parameters. Especially, the two-color laser field modulated by two chirped pulses can raise the PA efficiency on one side, and weaken the dependence of the PA process on phase shift on the other side.

Efficient photoassociation with a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off laser field

Wei Zhang, Yin Hui Huang, Ting Xie +2 more

We present a theoretical scheme used for investigating the formation of ultracold molecules via photoassociation with a slowly-turned-on and rapidly-turned-off (STRT) laser pulse, with Cs${}_{2}$ as an example. As compared with an unshaped laser pulse, this kind of shaped laser pulse has a prominent advantage by which we can prevent the associated molecules from returning to the initial scattering state. Numerical calculations show that an efficient photoassociation can be realized with the STRT laser pulse, which is available in the current experiment as an optical tool.

Photoassociation dynamics driven by a modulated two-color laser field

Wei Zhang, Zeyu Zhao, Ting Xie +3 more

Photoassociation (PA) dynamics of ultracold cesium atoms steered by a modulated two-color laser field $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}E(t)={E}_{0}f(t)\mathrm{cos}(\frac{2\ensuremath{\pi}}{{T}_{p}}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\varphi})\mathrm{cos}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{L}t)$ is investigated theoretically by numerically solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The PA dynamics is sensitive to the phase of envelope (POE) $\ensuremath{\varphi}$ and the period of the envelope ${T}_{p}$, which indicates that it can be controlled by varying POE $\ensuremath{\varphi}$ and period ${T}_{p}$. Moreover, we introduce the time- and frequency-resolved spectrum to illustrate how the POE $\ensuremath{\varphi}$ and the period ${T}_{p}$ influence the intensity distribution of the modulated laser pulse and hence change the time-dependent population distribution of photoassociated molecules. When the Gaussian envelope contains a few oscillations, the PA efficiency is also dependent on POE $\ensuremath{\varphi}$. The modulated two-color laser field is available in the current experiment based on laser mode-lock technology.

Steering thermal photoassociation of magnesium atoms by two time-delayed femtosecond laser pulses

Rong Zhang, Jinwei Hu, Yong‐Chang Han +2 more

By solving the full-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation with the thermal-random-phase wavepacket method, we investigate the photoassociation (PA) process of hot (1000 K) magnesium atoms induced by two time-delayed femtosecond laser pulses. Driven by the 840 nm fs laser pulses, the Mg2 molecules can be formed on the four excited states, (1)1Πg, (1)1Πu, (2)1Πu, and (2)1Σu+ , from the initial electronic ground state X1Σg+ . It is found that the three-photon couplings between X1Σg+ and the three ungerade states [(1)1Πu (2)1Πu, and (2)1Σu+ ], play dominant roles in the population transfer process. By scanning the pulse duration τ from 50 to 200 fs, and varying the delay time δt0 from 0 to 2τ fs, we find that the final PA population is strongly dependent on the two parameters. For a given δt0, the parameter τ can induce a significant variation (2 ∼ 6.8 times) for the final PA population transfer, and for a given τ, one can also obtain a significant variation (2.7 ∼ 3.5 times) of the final PA population by varying δt0. Additionally, the dynamics of the coherently vibrational wavepackets of the four excited states are also influenced by the two parameters.

Photoassociation dynamics controlled by a spectral π-jump laser pulse

Zeyu Zhao, Wei Zhang, Yin Hui Huang +1 more

The formation of ultracold Cs 2 molecules via photoassociation (PA) with a spectral π-jump laser pulse is theoretically investigated by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation using the mapped Fourier grid method. Numerical calculations show that the population distributions of associated molecules mainly result from the off-resonant excitation of the π-jump laser pulse. Compared with the transform-limited pulse, an efficient population accumulation in the PA process is achieved with the π-jump pulse. An oscillation pattern appears in the population on the vibrational levels of the state owing to the action of the post-half-pulse in the π-jump pulse. The PA efficiency is related to the Rabi angle of the laser pulse. A π-jump pulse can be used to enhance more effectively the PA efficiency than a transform-limited pulse with the same Rabi angle.
