Abstract

In this paper, we analyze (for the first time in literature) the secrecy performance of a two-hop cooperative network in which all the nodes are of the energy-harvesting self-sustaining type. Both source and relay harvest energy from a power beacon (PB) and employ the harvest-use (HU) architecture. We consider optimal combining of the direct and relayed signals at the destination and eavesdropper. We do not assume any channel state information (CSI) at the source. We derive an approximate closed-form expression for secrecy outage probability assuming selective decode-and-forward (SDF) protocol at the relay. We demonstrate that secrecy outage is a convex function of the transmit power of PB. Further, the security-reliability trade-off (SRT) is analyzed to highlight the trade-off between outage and intercept probability. Computer simulations validate the derived analytical expressions.

Security and Reliability Performance of a Cooperative Network with Self-Sustaining Nodes

Amit Patel, Shankar Prakriya

In this paper, we analyze the secrecy performance of a two-hop cooperative network consisting solely of energy-harvesting self-sustaining nodes drawing energy from a multi-antenna power beacon (PB). Performance of such networks is quite different from that with powered nodes. We consider optimal combining of the direct and relayed signals at the multi-antenna destination as well as the multi-antenna eavesdropper. Since availability of channel state information at the source is impractical in such networks, we assume fixed-rate signaling. To implement incremental signaling, we utilize feedback bits from the destination. Assuming practical nonlinear EH, exact and approximate expressions are derived for the secrecy outage probability of the selective decode-and-forward (SDF) and the incremental decode-and-forward (IDF) relaying schemes. It is demonstrated that IDF has much better secrecy performance than SDF just as with powered nodes. However, unlike with powered nodes, the secrecy performance is a convex function of the transmit power of PB. We propose a novel power back-off scheme to improve secrecy under different network operating conditions. The security-reliability trade-off (SRT) is analyzed to highlight the trade-off between outage and secrecy performance with the power back-off scheme. Simulation results validate the analytical expressions.

Secrecy Performance of a Cooperative Network with Battery-Assisted Energy Harvesting Nodes

Amit R. Patel, Shankar Prakriya

This paper analyzes the secrecy performance of a two-hop cooperative network with battery-assisted energy harvesting (EH) nodes. Both the source and the relay employ jamming to improve secrecy. A power beacon (PB) supplies energy to the nodes using the harvest-store-use (HSU) architecture. To counter the variation in harvested energy, some battery energy is added to it. Both nodes apportion this sum energy between the information and jamming symbols. We consider the maximal ratio combining (MRC) of the direct and relayed signals at the destination and the eavesdropper. We assume channel state information (CSI) of destination and eavesdropper links are not available at both the source and relay. We derive an approximate expression for secrecy outage probability assuming the selective decode-and-forward (SDF) protocol. We then derive the high-SNR approximation to it. We demonstrate improvement in secrecy performance with an increase in the transmit power of PB. Also, there exists an optimal power apportioning parameter different from equal power allocation that minimizes secrecy outage both at the source and at the relay. Extensive simulations corroborate the derived analytical results.

Secrecy outage of a multi‐relay cooperative communication network with accumulation of harvesting energy at relays

Shashibhushan Sharma, Sanjay Dhar Roy, Sumit Kundu

Security of confidential data at the physical layer has been analysed in a network where the source sends the confidential data to the destination via multiple energy harvesting decode and forward relays in the presence of a single eavesdropper (EAV). In this two‐hop communication, the first hop is broadcasting hop when the source sends the information signal to relay and other is the relaying hop when a selected relay forwards the information signal as well as transmits a jamming signal to destination and EAV. Each relay has the two batteries; one for accumulating the harvested energy and the other for power supply to relays for relay operation over a number of frames until the accumulated harvested energy becomes sufficient. In the broadcasting hop, relays harvest energy using a power splitting ratio scheme and accumulate the harvested energy in the battery over a number of communication frames. The performance is analysed in the form of secrecy outage probability (SOP) when the relay uses only the harvested energy to forward the signal. A closed‐form analytical expression for the SOP is derived. MATLAB‐based simulation results match well with the analytical results.
