Quantum Techniques for Optimizing Algorithms in Natural Language Processing

Dalydas Karanath, Udai Shankar

This research paper explores how Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms can be enhanced through the use of quantum computing. Since NLP applications such as sentiment analysis, text classification, and machine translation analyze huge volumes of data, the amount of resourceconsuming work for traditional computing architectures, including large scale language models, becomes excessive. There is an opportunity for significant improvements in speed and efficiency because of the quantum properties of superposition and entanglement. This research explores the use of quantum algorithms such as Grover's search, quantum machine learning algorithms, and quantum-inspired tensor networks for alleviating computational NLP bottlenecks. The comparative study of the quantum approach against the classical method shows notable speedup in theory with an explanation of the implementation of quantum algorithms on Noisy IntermediateScale Quantum (NISQ) devices. The most promising NLP algorithm enhancement will most likely come from hybrid quantum-classical sophisticated architectures as discovered through this study, where quantum processing is applied to some components and classical processing is used for the rest of the quantum-classical NLP algorithms. This is the first research study in Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) for real world NLP applications and the author is commended for their efforts.

Machine Learning: Quantum vs Classical

Tariq Mahmood Khan, Antonio Robles‐Kelly

Encouraged by growing computing power and algorithmic development, machine learning technologies have become powerful tools for a wide variety of application areas, spanning from agriculture to chemistry and natural language processing. The use of quantum systems to process classical data using machine learning algorithms has given rise to an emerging research area, i.e. quantum machine learning. Despite its origins in the processing of classical data, quantum machine learning also explores the use of quantum phenomena for learning systems, the use of quantum computers for learning on quantum data and how machine learning algorithms and software can be formulated and implemented on quantum computers. Quantum machine learning can have a transformational effect on computer science. It may speed up the processing of information well beyond the existing classical speeds. Recent work has seen the development of quantum algorithms that could serve as foundations for machine learning applications. Despite its great promise, there are still significant hardware and software challenges that need to be resolved before quantum machine learning becomes practical. In this paper, we present an overview of quantum machine learning in the light of classical approaches. Departing from foundational concepts of machine learning and quantum computing, we discuss various technical contributions, strengths and similarities of the research work in this domain. We also elaborate upon the recent progress of different quantum machine learning approaches, their complexity, and applications in various fields such as physics, chemistry and natural language processing.

A Comparison of Traditional Natural Language Processing Methods for Emotion Recognition Using Quantum Computing

Srirajarajeswari Thota, Sandeep Kumar Dash

Emotion Recognition plays an important role in recognizing human behavior. Human behavior may be represented in text, speech, and facial expressions. In traditional form, natural language processing known as NLP is used to extract features to evaluate emotions. With the evolution of Quantum Computing, Quantum Machine learning often called QML is one of the research areas used to evaluate emotions. This paper is designed to compare traditional ML models with QML models to analyze the sentiments and emotions of multimodal data. Here, NLP techniques are used for preprocessing. A hybrid model is built by combining NLP and QML. The preprocessed data are transmitted into quantum circuits for computation, and its results are compared with conventional machine learning models. This evaluation identifies QML as a promising future as it is useful for large and complex data sets with high dimensions. This study highlights the potential of QML in NLP and outlines the challenges such as encoding and hardware limitations.
