Abstract

We investigated phonon-assisted optical excitation of erbium ions using surface acoustic waves. The results will pave the way to on-chip control of the energy transduction between telecom-photons and long-lived electron spins.

Observation of Acoustically Induced Dressed States of Rare-Earth Ions

Ryuichi Ohta, Grégoire Lelu, Xuejun Xu +9 more

Acoustically induced dressed states of long-lived erbium ions in a crystal are demonstrated. These states are formed by rapid modulation of two-level systems via strain induced by surface acoustic waves whose frequencies exceed the optical linewidth of the ion ensemble. Multiple sidebands and the reduction of their intensities appearing near the surface are evidence of a strong interaction between the acoustic waves and the ions. This development allows for on-chip control of long-lived ions and paves the way to highly coherent hybrid quantum systems with telecom photons, acoustic phonons, and electrons.

Rare earth ions in solids provide a versatile platform for quantum optical information control. Our research focuses on light storage at telecom wavelengths in Erbium-doped crystals, aiming to develop efficient quantum optical memories for applications in quantum communication and computation. Additionally, we design solid-state devices relying on collective atom-atom interactions to enhance light-matter interactions, based on rare-earth photonic devices.

Quantum nanophotonic devices based on rare-earth ions (Conference Presentation)

In this talk I give an overview of our recent work on quantum nano-photonic devices based on rare-earth ions. The rare-earth ions exhibit excellent optical and spin coherence properties when embedded in nano-photonic devices. This enables on-chip optical quantum memories, single rare-earth-ion optically addressable quantum bits, and devices for quantum transduction. I will focus on our recent results based on ytterbium 171 in yttrium orthovanadate.
