Abstract

This paper puts forward the transmission from twin-peak electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to twin-peak electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), while it is rare to see the transformation between EIT and EIA in metastructure (MS) in one device in previous articles. With the incidence of TE waves, two transparent windows are generated, ranging from 0.382 THz to 0.986 THz which are separated by 0.604 THz, when the conductivity of vanadium dioxide (VO2) is set to 10 S/m. Two peaks reach 0.864 and 0.934, respectively, accompanied by the largest group delays of the two peaks being 7.55 and 4.54 ps. In addition, VO2 blocks in the metallic state will affect interference paths between energy levels, contributing to the formation of EIA, then maintaining a common absorption of 0.607 at 0.429 THz and 0.904 at 0.678 THz. Under the combined action of the dielectric resonator and metal resonator, the conversion from bimodal EIT to bimodal EIA is hardly been researched, at the same time, the adoption of the circuit model and the four-level theory proves the rationality of the model. The transformation from EIT to EIA is aroused by changing the state of VO2, promising broad prospects in multifunctional devices.

Analog of electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency phenomena of nonreciprocity and polarization sensitivity properties in layered topology metastructure

Hai-Ning Ye, Bao-Fei Wan, Haifeng Zhang

The nonreciprocal and polarization-sensitive performances of analog of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA-like) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT-like) effects are investigated by the transfer matrix method (TMM), and the layered topology metastructure containing microwave magnetized plasma is used to construct suitable bright resonators, dark resonators, and quasi-dark resonators. In the case of low frequencies, the incident TM wave fosters an evident nonreciprocal EIA-like effect, and its nonreciprocal absorptivity is higher than 0.8, while the EIA-like phenomenon fails to occur in the case of the incident TE wave. For the case of high-frequency incidence, the EIT-like and EIA-like effects can be switched by converting the TM wave into the TE one under the case of backward propagation, and the maximum nonreciprocal absorptivity can exceed 0.9 if the TE wave propagates. The effects of some critical variables such as incident angle, plasma frequency, plasma cyclotron frequency, and plasma layer thickness on nonreciprocal and polarization-sensitive characteristics have been explored, and the slow light property of the EIT-like effect has also been briefly involved, and its group refractive index can reach 1224. The energy level transition theory and the optimized two-oscillator model are also analyzed to explain the generation of EIA-like and EIT-like phenomena in depth. We hope that the relevant phenomena will be interesting for slow light devices, two-way communication of electromagnetic waves, and polarization separation devices.

Observation of electromagnetically induced absorption in a three-resonator system

Ningning Xu, Xueqian Zhang, Kenan Qu +5 more

Classic analog of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in metamaterials has been demonstrated extensively by its attractive potential applications in light storage, slow light and sensing. However, the counterpart of EIT, electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) has been studied rarely in coupled metamaterial systems. Here, we present the observation of the EIA effect in a vertically coupled three-resonator metamaterial. A well-defined absorption resonance is developed in the EIT window enabling a unique double-peak transparency, due to the magnetic resonance induced by the near-field coupling of the three resonators. The analog of EIA opens up a new route to advanced photonics devices.

From electromagnetically induced transparency to absorption in planar optical metamaterials

Bo Na, Jinhui Shi, Chunying Guan +1 more

We theoretically investigate the classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a planar metamaterial at optical frequency, which originates from destructive and constructive interference between dark and radiative elements. The metamaterial consists of two coupled resonators with different geometries. An EIT-like transparent window with low absorption is observed and found to be strongly affected by resonant states of the resonators. The transition between the EIT and EIA is achieved by changing the split width and coupling distance. The absorption is enhanced up to 2.5 times compared with the dipolar case. The excitation of the dark mode is very important for EIT-and EIA-like responses of the proposed metamaterial. The EIT and EIA phenomena offer a potential method for manipulating electromagnetic response in metamaterial-based devices.

EIA metamaterials based on hybrid metal/dielectric structures with dark-mode-enhanced absorption

Fuli Zhang, Xin‐Chao Huang, Weiqi Cai +8 more

Metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) has promising applications in spectroscopy and sensing. Here we propose an EIA metamaterial based on hybrid metal/dielectric structures, which are composed of a metallic wire and a dielectric block, and investigate the EIA-like effect by simulations, experiments, and the two-oscillator model. An EIA-like effect emerges in virtue of the near-field coupling between metallic wire and dielectric block, and the dielectric block exhibiting magnetic dipolar resonance makes a major contribution to the resonance absorption. The magnetic flux through the dielectric block engendered by the near filed of the metallic wire determines the coupling between dielectric block and metallic wire. With the variation of the separation between dielectric block and metallic wire, the EIA-like effect is preserved and does not convert into the EIT-like effect although the coupling and consequently the absorbance are altered. Based on the two-oscillator model, the absorption spectrum of the EIA metamaterial is quantitatively analyzed and the parameters of the oscillator system are retrieved.

Magnetically coupled electromagnetically induced transparency analogy of dielectric metamaterial

Fuli Zhang, Qian Cheng Zhao, Chuwen Lan +4 more

In this manuscript, we experimentally demonstrate magnetically coupled electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogy effect inside dielectric metamaterial. In contrast to previous studies employed different metallic topological microstructures to introduce dissipation loss change, barium strontium titanate, and calcium titanate (CaTiO3) are chosen as the bright and dark EIT resonators, respectively, due to their different intrinsic dielectric loss. Under incident magnetic field excitation, dielectric metamaterial exhibits an EIT-type transparency window around 8.9 GHz, which is accompanied by abrupt change of transmission phase. Numerical calculations show good agreement with experiment spectra and reveal remarkably increased group index, indicating potential application in slow light.

Polarization-independent and angle-insensitive electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) metamaterial based on bi-air-hole dielectric resonators

Lei Zhu, Xin Zhao, Liang Dong +3 more

We numerically demonstrate that an electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) all-dielectric metamaterial with properties of polarization-independence and incident angle insensitivity can be achieved in terahertz regimes. The metamaterial cell is composed of two bi-air-hole cubes (BCs) with different sizes. The two BCs function as superradiant and subradiant resonators, respectively. Based on Mie-type destructive interferences between dielectric resonators, the EIT effect is induced at around 8.25 THz with the transmission peak close to 0.95. Moreover, the "two-particle" model is introduced to describe the EIT effect and the influence of couplings between the two BCs on the transmission spectra. Analytical results are in good agreement with numerical simulation results. Owing to the symmetry and uniformity of the metamaterial structure, polarization-independent and angle-insensitive properties can be achieved. In addition, the slow light characteristic of the metamaterial is also verified. Such an EIT scheme may have potential applications in low-loss slow light devices and bandpass filters.
