Abstract

We study the role of unstable points in the Bohmian flow of a 2d system composed of two non-interacting harmonic oscillators. In particular, we study the unstable points in the inertial frame of reference as well as in the frame of reference of the moving nodal points, in cases with 1, 2 and multiple nodal points. Then, we find the contributions of the ordered and chaotic trajectories in the Born distribution, and when the latter is accessible by an initial particle distribution which does not satisfy Born's rule.

Order, Chaos and Born’s Distribution of Bohmian Particles

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

We study order, chaos and ergodicity in the Bohmian trajectories of a 2D quantum harmonic oscillator. We first present all the possible types (chaotic, ordered) of Bohmian trajectories in wavefunctions made of superpositions of two and three energy eigenstates of the oscillator. There is no chaos in the case of two terms and in some cases of three terms. Then, we show the different geometries of nodal points in bipartite Bohmian systems of entangled qubits. Finally, we study multinodal wavefunctions and find that a large number of nodal points does not always imply the dominance of chaos. We show that, in some cases, the Born distribution is dominated by ordered trajectories, something that has a significant impact on the accessibility of Born’s rule P=|Ψ|2 by initial distributions of Bohmian particles with P0≠|Ψ0|2.

Ergodicity and Born's rule in an entangled two-qubit Bohmian system

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

We study the Bohmian trajectories of a generic entangled two-qubit system, composed of coherent states of two harmonic oscillators with noncommensurable frequencies and focus on the relation between ergodicity and the dynamical approach to Born's rule for arbitrary distributions of initial conditions. We find that most Bohmian trajectories are ergodic and establish the same invariant ergodic limiting distributions of their points for any nonzero amount of entanglement. In the case of strong entanglement the distribution satisfying Born's rule is dominated by chaotic-ergodic trajectories. Therefore, P→|Ψ|^{2} for an arbitrary P_{0}. However, when the entanglement is weak the distribution satisfying Born's rule is dominated by ordered trajectories, which are not ergodic. In this case the ergodic trajectories do not, in general, lead to the distribution of Born's rule, therefore P=|Ψ|^{2} is guaranteed only if P_{0}=|Ψ_{0}|^{2}. Consequently, the existence of chaotic and ergodic Bohmian trajectories does not always lead to the dynamical establishment of Born's rule.

Chaos and ergodicity in an entangled two-qubit Bohmian system

A C Tzemos, G Contopoulos

Abstract We study in detail the onset of chaos and the probability measures formed by individual Bohmian trajectories in entangled states of two-qubit systems for various degrees of entanglement. The qubit systems consist of coherent states of 1-d harmonic oscillators with irrational frequencies. In weakly entangled states chaos is manifested through the sudden jumps of the Bohmian trajectories between successive Lissajous-like figures. These jumps are succesfully interpreted by the ‘nodal point-X-point complex’ mechanism. In strongly entangled states, the chaotic form of the Bohmian trajectories is manifested after a short time. We then study the mixing properties of ensembles of Bohmian trajectories with initial conditions satisfying Born’s rule. The trajectory points are initially distributed in two sets S 1 and S 2 with disjoint supports but they exhibit, over the course of time, abrupt mixing whenever they encounter the nodal points of the wavefunction. Then a substantial fraction of trajectory points is exchanged between S 1 and S 2 , without violating Born’s rule. Finally, we provide strong numerical indications that, in this system, the main effect of the entanglement is the establishment of ergodicity in the individual Bohmian trajectories as t → ∞ : different initial conditions result to the same limiting distribution of trajectory points.

Chaotic trajectories in complex Bohmian systems

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

We consider the Bohmian trajectories in a 2-d quantum harmonic oscillator with non commensurable frequencies whose wavefunction is of the form $Ψ=aΨ_{m_1,n_1}(x,y)+bΨ_{m_2,n_2}(x,y)+cΨ_{m_3,n_3}(x,y)$. We first find the trajectories of the nodal points for different combinations of the quantum numbers $m,n$. Then we study, in detail, a case with relatively large quantum numbers and two equal $m's$. We find %We find first the nodal points where $Ψ=0$. The nodes can be found analytically only if $m$ and $n$ are small. If two $m's$ (or two $n's$ are equal we can find explicitly the nodal points , which are of two types (1) fixed nodes independent of time and (2) moving nodes which from time to time collide with the fixed nodes and at particular times they go to infinity. Finally, we study the trajectories of quantum particles close to the nodal points and observe, for the first time, how chaos is generated in a complex system with multiple nodes scattered on the configuration space.

Nodal points and the transition from ordered to chaotic Bohmian trajectories

C Efthymiopoulos, C Kalapotharakos, G Contopoulos

We explore the transition from order to chaos for the Bohmian trajectories of a simple quantum system corresponding to the superposition of three stationary states in a 2D harmonic well with incommensurable frequencies. We study in particular the role of nodal points in the transition to chaos. Our main findings are (a) a proof of the existence of bounded domains in configuration space which are devoid of nodal points, (b) an analytical construction of formal series representing regular orbits in the central domain as well as a numerical investigation of its limits of applicability, (c) a detailed exploration of the phase-space structure near the nodal point. In this exploration we use an adiabatic approximation and we draw the flow chart in a moving frame of reference centered at the nodal point. We demonstrate the existence of a saddle point (called X-point) in the vicinity of the nodal point which plays a key role in the manifestation of exponential sensitivity of the orbits. One of the invariant manifolds of the X-point continues as a spiral terminating at the nodal point. We find cases of Hopf bifurcation at the nodal point and explore the associated phase space structure of the nodal point—X-point complex. We finally demonstrate the mechanism by which this complex generates chaos. Numerical examples of this mechanism are given for particular chaotic orbits, and a comparison is made with previous related works in the literature.

Ergodicity and Born's rule in an entangled three-qubit Bohmian system

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

We study in detail the interplay between chaos and entanglement in the Bohmian trajectories of three entangled qubits, made of coherent states of the quantum harmonic oscillator. We find that all the three-dimensional (3D) chaotic trajectories are ergodic; namely, they have a common long time distribution of points regardless of the initial conditions, and for any nonzero entanglement, their number is much larger than in the corresponding two-qubit system. Furthermore, the range of entanglements for which practically all the trajectories are chaotic and ergodic is much larger than in the two-qubit case. Thus, as the dimensionality of the system increases, Born's rule becomes accessible to a wider range of arbitrary initial distributions than in the 2D case. Our numerical results lead to the conjecture that, for multiqubit systems, Born's rule is the limit of almost all initial distributions of particles.
