Abstract

At the Physics & Informatics Laboratories (PHI Labs) of NTT Research, Inc., we explore a new principle that will bring about a revolution in information processing technology in the interdisciplinary area between quantum physics and brain science, and it is here where we have positioned our research field. We will focus on quantum-classical crossover physics and critical phenomena in neural networks. We will concentrate, in particular, on optical implementation as a means of achieving a simple, elegant, and practical implementation of a computer that is based on this new principle, specifically on the optical parametric oscillator that can achieve quantum neural networks at room temperature. This article introduces the concepts, technologies, and target applications making up this research field at PHI Labs.

Quantum Neural Networks: Bridging Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence

Smrita Singh, Tanzeel Ahmed, Ashutosh Singh Chauhan

Quantum computing and neural networks have revolutionized computational intelligence and have the potential to bring revolution in a wide range of scientific, industrial, and technological fields. In some computational activities, quantum computing utilizes the concepts of superposition, entanglement, and quantum parallelism and performs better than classical computers by processing complicated data with high speed and efficiency. Neural networks have transformed decision-making, natural language processing, and pattern recognition especially deep learning models. By incorporating quantum computing into neural network architectures, Quantum Neural Networks (QNNs) open new paradigms in data encoding, feature representation, and learning dynamics by overcoming the computational constraints and scaling related problems of classical models. In this chapter, the theoretical basis, latest developments and possible applications of a quantum neural network have been discussed. This chapter covers the constraints of near-term quantum devices, quantum noise, data encoding techniques, and practical difficulties in hardware implementation. Real-world applications in quantum chemistry, financial modeling, cryptography, and biological imaging have been studied. To fully realize the promise of quantum neural processing, this chapter concludes by describing current research shortcomings and providing opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaboration among computer scientists, physicists, and AI researchers.

Shedding Light on the Future: Exploring Quantum Neural Networks through Optics

Shang Yu, Zhian Jia, Aonan Zhang +7 more

Abstract At the dynamic nexus of artificial intelligence and quantum technology, quantum neural networks (QNNs) play an important role as an emerging technology in the rapidly developing field of quantum machine learning. This development is set to revolutionize the applications of quantum computing. This article reviews the concept of QNNs and their physical realizations, particularly implementations based on quantum optics. The integration of quantum principles with classical neural network architectures is first examined to create QNNs. Some specific examples, such as the quantum perceptron, quantum convolutional neural networks, and quantum Boltzmann machines are discussed. Subsequently, the feasibility of implementing QNNs through photonics is analyzed. The key challenge here lies in achieving the required non‐linear gates, and measurement‐induced approaches, among others, seem promising. To unlock the computational potential of QNNs, addressing the challenge of scaling their complexity through quantum optics is crucial. Progress in controlling quantum states of light is continuously advancing the field. Additionally, it has been discovered that different QNN architectures can be unified through non‐Gaussian operations. This insight will aid in better understanding and developing more complex QNN circuits.
