In the recent past, quantum theory has taken over a plethora of fields, such as with quantum chemistry, quantum optics, and quantum computing. Another such application is quantum internet. With the help of quantum physics, the innovative idea of a quantum internet aims to make communication safe and effective. However, there are several fundamentals that need to be understood before a quantum internet can be fully realized. Despite the ceaseless scope and potential extent of a quantum internet, not all remain aware of it, and research and experimentation in this field are yet to reach worthwhile levels. In this contribution, we study a plethora of related articles and issues and conduct an advanced survey explaining the importance of quantum computing and its need in the modern world. We elicit the advantages and disadvantages of quantum internet and explain its working. This review also explains the relationship of quantum computing to 5G and 6G. We list the various performance parameters of a quantum internet and explain the parameters that affect its performance.
A long-range quantum communication network is among the most promising applications of emerging quantum technologies. We discuss the potential of such a quantum internet for the secure transmission of classical and quantum information, as well as theoretical and experimental approaches and recent advances to realize them. We illustrate the involved concepts such as error correction, teleportation or quantum repeaters and consider an approach to this topic based on catchy visualizations as a context-based, modern treatment of quantum theory at high school.
Breakthrough developments in quantum information technology is paving the way to the Quantum Internet. This article aims to provide an overview of the current state of research and development in the field of Quantum Communications and Quantum Internet. We examine the main building blocks and the latest achievements. By providing a holistic overview of recent achievements, this article fosters a deeper understanding of these building blocks, the related opportunities, and challenges associated with the realization of the Quantum Internet. We also provide some simple pedagogical models aimed to give the reader a clear insight on the interactions between quantum networking elements. A simple Quantum Internet 5Level-3D communication model is also provided, which integrates with, rather than parallels, the classical OSI and TCP/IP models. We further describe deployed testbeds and trials and highlight potential opportunities and challenges for Communication Service Provider's. We also provide some KPIs of quantum technologies and their evolution over the last decade. This article is intended as a self-contained entry level tutorial for newcomers who are not familiar with quantum information theory, but with some background knowledge about classical networking. Academics, students, as well as professionals can use this article to become able to begin researching the Quantum Internet, without having to read a plethora of articles, web pages, and books on the subject.
Quantum communication researchers have achieved significant progress during the recent decades and quantum networking has shown promise in terms of improving the overall functional benefits of the Internet and enabling applications with no counterpart in the classical world. It is a breakthrough technology towards the unimaginable future. In a quantum network, the source and destination may be connected by quantum repeaters/routers for facilitating qubit transmissions. The quantum network of the future is envisaged to pervade the entire globe, relying on terrestrial components, satellites, airplanes, ships and other vehicles. It is anticipated that it will support nearly unconditional security, super-computing power, large network capacity-even at high velocity-and privacy.
Today’s Internetis a global communications network used to transfer, process, and store classical information. The quantum Internetis a hypothetical high-speed Internetthat provides ultra-secure connectivity to quantum devices across the globe. Itis a network of quantum computers that will someday send, compute, and receive information encoded in quantum states. It is a communications network that will transform industries, increase security, and alter the way we transmit information. While quantum computers exist in the physical world, the concept of quantumInternetis currently theoretical. In its infant form, the quantum Internetpromises to make the digital domain safer, more productive, and more powerful than ever before. In this study, we provide a primer on quantum Internet, which provides a large-scale application of advanced quantum communication technologies and protocols.
A quantum internet is an emerging quantum information technology, possibly becoming a pinnacle of wide-area distributed system allowed under the laws of physics. The current expansion of quantum technologies would lead to innumerable types of quantum systems, composed of various kinds of quantum devices connected by a dedicated quantum network. However, the (inter)connectivity offered by a quantum internet should ideally be agnostic of the technologies used by each component system. Furthermore, concurrent progresses of the quantum technologies complicate the task of defining what a quantum internet is. In this paper, we adopt a backcasting approach to elucidate what a quantum internet should be. We begin by discussing what we believe to be the requirements of an ultimate distributed quantum system, from which we explain what role a quantum internet would play in achieving this ultimate system. We then lead to more practical requirements on a quantum internet, considering the known and expected constraints in designing a quantum internet. We also organize and categorize the relationship among known quantum network technologies and services relevant to a quantum internet. We hope this document to lay a common ground for all the key stakeholders of a quantum internet, including researchers, industrial enterprises, and policy makers and regulators.
