Optimal control in ecology and environmental protection based on quantum computing

D.T. Muhamediyeva, Narzillo Mamatov, M. H. Raupova +2 more

The article considers the solution of the optimal control tasks in ecology and environmental protection based on quantum computing. Pollution dynamics are investigated, with natural decay, diffusion and controlled remediation treatments being considered. Optimal control is designed to minimize environmental impact while also minimizing the costs of cleaning up the environment. To solve the problem effectively, a quantum optimization algorithm is proposed. For this, the desired problem is transformed into a quadratic optimization problem. This enables the application of quantum computing to the formulation of optimal policies for environmental regulation. Experiments are performed, a comparison is made between quantum-classical approaches and conventional techniques, and the feasibility of quantum optimization in sustainability issues is debated.

Hybrid Classical-Quantum Optimization Techniques for Solving Mixed-Integer Programming Problems in Production Scheduling

Akshay Ajagekar, Kumail Al Hamoud, Fengqi You

Quantum computing (QC) holds great promise to open up a new era of computing and has been receiving significant attention recently. To overcome the performance limitations of near-term QC, utilizing the current quantum computers to complement classical techniques for solving real-world problems is of utmost importance. In this paper, we develop QC-based solution strategies that exploit quantum annealing and classical optimization techniques for solving large-scale scheduling problems in manufacturing systems. The applications of the proposed algorithms are illustrated through two case studies in production scheduling. First, we present a hybrid QC-based solution approach for the job-shop scheduling problem. Second, we propose a hybrid QC-based parametric method for the multi-purpose batch scheduling problem with a fractional objective. The proposed hybrid algorithms can tackle optimization problems formulated as mixed-integer linear and mixed-integer fractional programs, respectively, and provide feasibility guarantees. Performance comparison between state-of-the-art exact and heuristic solvers and the proposed QC-based hybrid solution techniques is presented for both job-shop and batch scheduling problems. Unlike conventional classical solution techniques, the proposed hybrid frameworks harness quantum annealing to supplement established deterministic optimization algorithms and demonstrate performance efficiency over standard off-the-shelf optimization solvers.

Quantum Optimization for Portfolio Management in Financial Services Using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) Algorithm

Pankaj Varma, Yalla Jeevan Nagendra Kumar, Laith Jasim +3 more

The possibility of adopting quantum computing in the field of financial services can bring a new breakthrough in portfolio management since the optimization of this method requires large numbers for the solution that exceed the capabilities of classical computing algorithms. This study focuses on using a hybrid quantum-classical computational method known as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) in optimizing portfolio selection. The VQE aims at finding the best allocation of the portfolio; the best weights that correspond to minimum risk and maximum return as predicted by the modern portfolio theory. The study assesses the suitability and speed of VQE in solving matters involving portfolio management tasks such as handling vast data and nonlinear constraints which are hard to solve through other optimization methods. Thus, under the theoretical framework of quantum computing, the study seeks to address some of the following challenges: computational time and scalability in portfolio optimization. The VQE algorithm work on different portfolio configurations; their performance in comparison with classical techniques; special attention is paid to the rate of convergence and the achievement of the optimal solution. Based on the results of this work we can conclude that there is a considerable literature on quantum finance and that this field can benefit from utilization of quantum algorithms as a tool to improve decision-making in the financial market. That is why the study proves that quantum optimization techniques, to wit VQE, can provide better solutions when it comes to portfolio management within the sphere of finance.
