Abstract

Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNG) are quantum cryptographic protocols that distill secure random bit strings from quantum sources. One of the main research challenges in this area is to improve their random bit generation rates. Here we investigate several possible post processing strategies for QRNG protocols, showing when they help and when they hinder. We also look at the trade-offs to using these methods as some require a larger amount of initial randomness. Finally, we comment on some interesting future problems that remain open.

Quantum Random Number Generator-Based Cryptographic Algorithm Design

Jincheng Zhang

This paper explores the design of cryptographic algorithms leveraging the inherent randomness of quantum random number generators (QRNGs). Traditional cryptographic algorithms often rely on pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs), which are deterministic and therefore vulnerable to attacks if their internal state is compromised. QRNGs, on the other hand, derive their randomness from quantum mechanical phenomena, offering a fundamentally unpredictable source of numbers. This research investigates the application of QRNGs to enhance cryptographic security, focusing on constructing algorithms that exploit this unique property. The core claim is that utilizing QRNG characteristics allows for the design of more secure cryptographic algorithms. The proposed mechanism involves capitalizing on the non-deterministic nature of QRNGs to build algorithms with heightened security levels. This approach presents a novel security guarantee method by incorporating true randomness into cryptographic processes. We examine specific algorithm designs and analyze their security implications compared to traditional PRNG-based approaches. The paper concludes with a discussion on the challenges and future directions of utilizing QRNGs in cryptography.

Optimization of experimental quantum randomness expansion

Amélie Piveteau, Alban Seguinard, Piotr Mironowicz +1 more

Quantum technologies provide many applications for information processing tasks that are impossible to realize within classical physics. These capabilities include such fundamental resources as generating secure, i.e., private and unpredictable random values. Yet, the problem of quantifying the amount of generated randomness is still not fully solved. This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the design and performance optimization of a quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on Bell inequality violations. We investigate key protocol parameters, including the smoothing parameter ( ϵ s ), test round probability ( γ ), and switching delays, and their effects on the generation rate and quality of randomness. We identify optimal ranges for γ and p Ω (the protocol’s nonaborting probability) to balance the trade-off between randomness consumption and net randomness generation. We investigate the impact of the laser power on the overall generation rate. We explore the impact of switching delays on the system’s performance, providing strategies to mitigate these effects. The work provides practical guidelines for the efficient and secure design of QRNG systems and other cryptographic protocols.

AI-BASED QUANTUM RANDOM NUMBER GENERATION FOR SECURE COMMUNICATIONS

Narayana Gaddam

One of the solutions to the problem of secure communication is the Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) which generate true randomness based on quantum mechanical principles.QRNGs are different from conventional pseudo random number generator in that they use quantum uncertainty to generate outputs which are very unpredictable. This work attempts to examine different QRNG architectures, study the possible integration of cryptographic frameworks with these architectures and highlight potential vulnerabilities in the integration of cryptographic frameworks with QRNG architectures.Post-processing techniques, i.e.Zero-Phase Component Analysis (ZPCA) and neural network based techniques are also studied to increase entropy and suppress environmental noise in QRNG systems.Key findings show that system jitter models based QRNG architectures are more scalable and less expensive for use in real world applications.Additionally, incorporating cryptographic protocols with the QRNGs endows them with the ability to resist quantum threats, and hence, provide better key distribution in the secure IoT communication frameworks. However, as security problems such as side channel attacks and hardware manipulation are still big issues. It also points out some of the emerging research trends including hybrid QRNG architectures, i.e., QRNG with classical PRNG to increase the entropy rate.As such, the proposed methodologies attempt to enhance QRNG scalability, security, and energy efficiency in cloud infrastructures, in mobile systems and in critical security environments. The advancement of these technologies will assume a crucial function in the advancement of quantum-safe frames for current advanced computerized foundation.

Enhancing the operational efficiency of quantum random number generators

Botond L. Márton, Dóra Istenes, László Bacsárdi

Random numbers are of vital importance in today’s world and used for example in many cryptographical protocols to secure the communication over the internet. The generators producing these numbers are Pseudo Random Number Generators (PRNGs) or True Random Number Generators (TRNGs). A subclass of TRNGs are the Quantum based Random Number Generators (QRNGs) whose generation processes are based on quantum phenomena. However, the achievable quality of the numbers generated from a practical implementation can differ from the theoretically possible. To ease this negative effect post-processing can be used, which contains the use of extractors. They extract as much entropy as possible from the original source and produce a new output with better properties. The quality and the different properties of a given output can be measured with the help of statistical tests. In our work we examined the effect of different extractors on two QRNG outputs and found that witg the right extractor we can improve their quality.

Novel Quantum Random Number Generator for Cryptographical Applications

Maksim Iavich, Tamari Kuchukhidze, Tetyana Okhrimenko +1 more

Random numbers are a fundamental resource in science and engineering, and are also widely used in many fields, such as simulation, cryptography, lotteries, fundamental science. There are algorithmically generated numbers that look like random numbers but are not truly random. These pseudo random numbers are generated from a computer, using deterministic algorithms. Because, we cannot use pseudo random generators in situations, where true randomness is necessary, we use true random number generators. In this case, we use unpredictable random events as a random source. Quantum random number generators (QRNG) output true random numbers based on inherent randomness in quantum measurements. Our goal is to generate fast random numbers at a lower cost. At the same time, a high level of randomness is essential. We present the improved novel quantum random number generator, which is based the on time of arrival QRNG. It is rather efficient, as it uses the simple version of the detectors with rather few requirements. The novel QRNG produces more than one random bit per each photon detection.
