Abstract

Quantum communication is based on a number of novel ideas. It is propelled forward by intriguing physics and associated disciplines such as superposition, entanglement, quantum tunneling, etc. This necessitates acquiring new skills ranging from physics, programming, computer science, communication engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. The first applications have already reached market segments, and laboratories in universities are working on and developing advanced quantum networks, but the majority of the updates are yet to come. The quantum network is a new scientific field that is expected to become one of the core networking technologies in the future. In this research work, the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, the principles underlying it, and the progress made thus far in quantum computing and quantum communicationare discussed.

Quantum Communication: From Fundamentals to Recent Trends, Challenges and Open Problems

Dutta, Hrishikesh, Amit Kumar Bhuyan

With the recent advancements and developments in quantum technologies, the emerging field of quantum communication and networking has gained the attention of the researchers. Owing to the unique properties of quantum mechanics, viz., quantum superposition and entanglement, this new area of quantum communication has shown potential to replace modernday communication technologies. The enhanced security and high information sharing ability using principles of quantum mechanics has encouraged networking engineers and physicists to develop this technology for next generation wireless systems. However, a conceptual bridge between the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, photonics and the deployability of a quantum communication infrastructure is not well founded in the current literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by merging the theoretical concepts from quantum physics to the engineering and computing perspectives of quantum technology. This paper builds the fundamental concepts required for understanding quantum communication, reviews the key concepts and demonstrates how these concepts can be leveraged for accomplishing successful communication. The paper delves into implementation advancements for executing quantum communication protocols, explaining how hardware implementation enables the achievement of all basic quantum computing operations. Finally, the paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art advancements in the field of quantum communication and quantum internet; and points out the recent trends, challenges and open problems for the real-world realization of next generation networking systems.

Quantum Communication Technology

Nicolas Gisin, Rob Thew

Quantum communication is built on a set of disruptive concepts and technologies. It is driven by fascinating physics and by promising applications. It requires a new mix of competencies, from telecom engineering to theoretical physics, from theoretical computer science to mechanical and electronic engineering. First applications have already found their way to niche markets and university labs are working on futuristic quantum networks, but most of the surprises are still ahead of us. Quantum communication, and more generally quantum information science and technologies, are here to stay and will have a profound impact on the XXI century.

Foundations and advances in photonic quantum-secure communication [Invited]

Bhaskar Kanseri, Sohan Singh Bisht, Abhay Singh Dulta

Recent progress in quantum technologies has brought quantum communication and networking from a largely theoretical idea to an emerging practical reality. By exploiting fundamental quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement, quantum communication promises capabilities that are fundamentally different and out of reach for classical communication systems, particularly in terms of security and information sharing. This review aims to present the essential theoretical concepts required to understand quantum communication, alongside an experimental and engineering perspective that highlights how these ideas are realized using real hardware. We explain core principles and protocols in a manner that connects the physics to practical system design, allowing readers to see how quantum theory and communication technology jointly enable quantum networking. The paper further surveys recent experimental and technological advances that have made practical quantum communication possible, emphasizing the role of photonic hardware, sources, detectors, and integrated platforms in enabling key operations, now leading to deployment of multi-node long-distance quantum networks. Finally, we also present the current developments in quantum-secure communication and quantum networking efforts undergoing in India, placing them in the context of the global progress.

Future Quantum Communications and Networking: A Review and Vision

Peiying Zhang, Ning Chen, Shigen Shen +3 more

Based on quantum mechanics, quantum communications have clock synchronization properties and unbreakable security. Recently, related technologies of quantum communications have made breakthroughs one after another, and it has also realized functions and applications that are difficult to achieve in traditional networks. In this era of the rise of quantum networks similar to the eve of the birth of the classical Internet “Arpanet,” researchers are full of longing for the blueprint of the future quantum network. In this work, we summarize, analyze and look forward to quantum communications and networking compared with the traditional Internet. Specifically, the related fundamentals, related technological developments, and existing challenges of quantum networks are firstly analyzed. On this basis, we look ahead and propose a prototype of the future quantum network architectures. Finally, we sort out and analyze the paradigm, principle, and properties of quantum communications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review and vision work on quantum communications and networking.

A Review of Quantum Communication Technology Research

Xiaogang Du, Jigui Mao, Dexin Zhu

Quantum communication as a vital branch of quantum information science, leverages physical properties such as quantum superposition, entanglement, and the impossibility of cloning to pioneer entirely new technical pathways for achieving unconditional secure communication. This paper comprehensively and meticulously elucidates the core technological principles of quantum communication, including quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, and quantum secure direct communication; It also delves into its application status in critical domains such as dedicated communications, finance, and government affairs. Furthermore, it analyzes the numerous technical challenges currently faced, including the stability of quantum bits, limitations on communication distance, and difficulties in standardization. Finally, it offers a prospective outlook on its future development trends. Research indicates that quantum communication technology is progressively transitioning from the laboratory to large-scale application stages, with its integration into existing communication systems and strategic value in national security domains becoming increasingly prominent.
